Crossing the chains provide two things 1. If the trailer comes disconnected from the hitch. The chains will cradle the hitch and keep the rig from planting in the ground and pole vaulting. 2. cradle effect will keep the rig behind you as you make your controlled emergency stop.
😬I'm almost sorry that I (Daniel) asked this question - now I have a visual in my head - but on the other hand happy that I did. Thanks for the education. Much appreciated, and It makes perfect sense in case of an emergency. Have you had any close calls yet?
I was leaving on a mission trip with a van of youth and a cargo trailer behind. The Pastor had hooked up the trailer. I was dumb not to check the hitch before getting in the drivers seat. We were on the freeway ramp when the trailer came off. SCAREY! The chain had been crossed, and luckily we had not picked up speed. Lesson: Always lock or use a pin in your hitch. And make sure there is not too much weight behind the trailer tires which put stress on the hitch.
As a former truck driver, I can’t recommend strongly enough that you drive with your lights on ALL the time. Vehicles that do have less accidents as people see you first. Also, hate to be a killjoy here but anything that obstructs your windshield view of vehicles is a safety no-no. This means place your papers in the glovebox (no reflections), place your GPS’s, phones and other items LOW enough so the tops do not raise above your hood line. It takes just a millisecond to NOT see that fast car coming because they are hidden until it’s too late behind your devices screens. I speak from experience.
Oh, former truck driver! I (Daniel) have so many questions, but I won't ask them all. 😀First off, GREAT tips on windshield visibility and you are 💯correct, it only takes a split second. Secondly, would it be overkill to install a semi horn on my F-250? It's the cars that want to creep into my lane while they're merging onto the highway at 20mph that drives me bonkers. I feel like a wake up horn may help, but I could be off my rocker! Thirdly, would you recommend I sign up for a fleet card? Do you think it would help to save on gas - enough for it to be worth it?
@@Wanderlocal - LOL! Overkill for an Air Horn, nah. Just personal preference. We were taught to break ourselves of the habit of honking your horn as it robs time that you should spend avoiding the (pending) accident. Most passenger truck air horns (and semi’s) operate off of a button or pull cord, not the steering wheel horn which is your first impulse, and involves taking your hands and eyes off the road to operate. It sounded like yours was a gas engine, sorry if I’m wrong. I’d consider a SAM’s or Costco card before fleet (Costco credit card saves you 4% on fuel too I think), but yes that saves you money IF you use a lot of fuel. Also know that you won’t be able to gas up all the time using it unless you stay to major cities and truck routes. Depending on the card, your volume, I would have my doubts. The benefits come for drivers close to the 100k miles a year category. Me, unless you are going to be on the road daily, skip it and use a gas price finder app. The exception might be if you can get in on a group plan (fleet of RV’ers). The only other tips I can think of might be never be the fastest vehicle, watch wind warning signs (might not matter as much w an airstream), and in general just go slower than you think you should. Sorry but I keep thinking about your lane incursion horn question. I’ve always avoided cities when possible, and if necessary pass in off peak traffic hours. If on the highway, I’d keep myself more aware in avoiding being beside a wandering vehicle. Never drive upset, learn to let people, expect people to pull in front of you and slow down. (They see big vehicle and think slow.) And unless they actually hit you, just relax, slow down, and chill... chose not to react. Sounds silly, but a zen attitude is the best safe driving technique EVER. 😎
@@Wanderlocal It's called an airhorn and if you go to "Keep Your Daydream" you can hear how theirs sounds. I would definitely install one, for no other reason than they sound so cool.
Crisscross the chains so that if the Airstream ever comes off the ball it lands in the nice little hammock you just made for it, instead of digging into the pavement at 70 mph. Also, watching you try to mount the license plate......lol. As an Airstream owner myself, I can honestly say without a shadow of a doubt that you will become very handy very fast. Welcome to the family.
OhhState, let's hope so, because at this point I'm only further embarrassing myself! 🤣As minimalists, I (Daniel) didn't even own tools. We had to buy some at the beginning of this journey and it seems there are still a few tools missing - a rivet thingamajiggy here and another thingamabobby there! @@Wanderlocal I have a tool box specifically for rivet related things. I carry it anytime I travel. I also have an Olympic rivet shaver which has saved me so many times. I doubt you would need that on a trailer that new but you never know. I carry four tool boxes with me when I travel. Rivets, electrical, caulking, and standard tools. Usually when I get to a campsite the first thing I do is find what broke. hahaahhahahahaha
🤣That's amazing! What year is your Airstream? That is one of the main reasons we bought new, since we don't have these kind of skills. That being said, I'm super interested in what all goes in the rivet toolbox. We need to invest in some of this stuff but honestly don't have a clue where to start.
@@Wanderlocal a rivet tool for pop rivets, and find every kind of sized rivet Lowe’s has and just put them in your tool box. Lol. That might be overboard for a new trailer but I’ve used so many. From the inside skins to the window arms (those are a special order tubular rivet from Vintage Trailer Supply) to the running lights, the tail light cans, the door latch, everything! Mine is a 1971, 25’. Just had her professionally polished and the inside has been completely gutted and redone. My airstream and I have a love hate relationship that’s for sure. But at the end of the day, I don’t want anything else. I’d love to give you my number somehow? If you have questions maybe I could answer or help you trouble shoot. I don’t have a lot of experience with new airstreams but I’ve had to fix or redo almost everything on the old ones. With help from fellow air streamers. It literally takes a village. ☺️
When my wife and I bought our camper, the sale guy came out and went over everything. But when we got to our camp site, I couldn’t remember nothing. We basically just had to learn hands on experience.
That's exactly what happen to us when we picked up our fist Airstream, which is why we asked them to let us try to figure this stuff out on our own this time. There's just so much to learn when you get a new rig, that it's pretty much impossible to learn everything from a manual or a sales guy. It's a school of hard knocks education for sure! I’m really glad I found you and your husbands channel. My husband has talked me into buying an Airstream and living out of it for the duration of his military career or at least a couple of years anyway. I’m nervous to say the least but also excited. It will truly make our lives more simpler moving every few years with the military anyway. We are in the mist of ordering our Airstream now. Watching the two of you and your journey is not only very educating but is also helping us for what we need to prepare for, good and bad. Thank you and God bless.

You might consider placing the transfer case in 4L (Four Wheel Low) when backing up. It will allow you to literally idle into the camping spot, no throttle necessary. Keep in mind that while your truck is in ' 4L ' super tight turns are a bit of a problem.. Cheers!

Daniel, Backing can be stressful for both the driver and spotter. Remember, you are both on the same team and have the EXACT same goal. Lauren did an excellent job communicating with you - trust her. She also made the best recommendation in asking you to get out and survey the area. You guys are a great team and we enjoy watching your brilliantly produced videos! They are in a class of their own. Also, remember to turn on and test the power with your surge protector and then turn the “clean’” power off again PRIOR to connecting your power cable from your Airstream to the surge protector and turning it on again. You want to make sure the power is “all good” before connecting your rig. Safe travels - we’ll be watching!

Nice video, i am very happy for you!!! ... 2 tips (not to bore you with too many).... if you have cell signal, call each other on video and the spotter can show a full picture of what's happening while back parking. Driver watches video call and can see where to go. (you can put the ph on a windshield ph holder). Before pulling into a site, we test the electrical box with our surge protector, once the surge protector does its thing and gives the "ok", then we pull in and connect all. Sometimes you set up and then realize the power box has issues and you have to move to another site. Enjoy RV life, the best!!!!

Crossing chains is definitely for hitch catching in chains in event of separation, recommend turning them 2 full turns to take out some slack helping chains keep hitch seating when emergency situation. Surprisingly shocked that you didn’t get complete hook up and camper walk around so they show you details Good luck!! 🍀

OMG 15:39... never take the chocks out before hooking up the truck! Luckily you're on what looks like level ground... but not a good habit to develop. Imagine a campground full of children and your trailer decides to roll away... Good luck in your ventures! I'm sure things will get easier once you get in the swing of things again! :)
Elizabeth, good point! 🙌 Yeah, for some reason the Airstreams don't come with chocks and I (Daniel) had ours back at the house. I'd imagine Airstream of Tampa has one heck of a level surface there. Oh, and we switched from plastic chocks to rubber (I heard they're more stable/durable), and also use the x-chocks now too. You are correct, I was a bit - no - I was a LOT rusty this day! 😂Thanks for following along on our journey!

Giving directions while backing can be a marriage stressor. We use the passenger side/driver side commands. That leaves no doubt in the mind of the one behind the wheel which way the trailer needs to move.
Truth!!! And we love the passenger/driver side tip. I (Lauren) try to remember to do that. For some reason I seem to go back to “just straighten it up” often. Obviously not that helpful. 🤣🤷♀️

I don’t know if it’s 100% right, but I was once told that you cross the chains to help cradle the tongue and take more weight in the event the trailer comes off. But I could be wrong 🤷🏼♂️
@@Wanderlocal we have not, nor do I know anyone is. The name of the game when hooking up and starting drive day is routine routine routine! Do it the same way every time so it will feel wrong if it’s not right. Also, don’t rush it. Even if it’s raining out. Make it fun, but don’t rush hookup. If you do both of those, you will be good! 😎😎
So so true! I'm a bit OCD, so the process keeps me sane too. Oh, and about that rain. I've had to do it once, and it super sucked, but I managed to stick to the process. Whenever I see someone rushing to hook up, it gives me heart palpitations - especially, when you consider what's at stake!
You cross the chains just in case the hitch comes loose or off the ball it will fall right in the chains and the chains will keep it from scraping the ground.

Congrats on your new AS. LOVE the truck. We have an F150 and tow a Lance. Our first camper ever. Watched a TON of UA-cam vids. I went with a Hensley hitch - can open my tailgate without hitting the jack! ha. Also, I went with a hard-wired Surge/EMS, so wouldn’t have to worry about losing the portable one. We only camp part-time, but really enjoy getting away. Be safe!

The longer you RV the more you will learn. Every time it’s always something new. Like never back up with out a spotter. Lessen learned. Check out KYD they found out the had way also. Have fun and good RVing.

Dora and Ed, yes! We are already feeling thankful for our surge protector. We're on the beach this week in TX and the weather has been a bit funny. Our surge protector has already reset the power a few times here. 😲 And, we're going to have to Google a quick connect for the fresh water connection. We've never heard of that! Do you suggest a specific brand?
Good point, Brad! Now I'm wondering which way is the preferred (better) method. 🤔I (Daniel) also received mixed opinions on where to hook the brake cable. It seems there are definitely varying opinions. I'll keep asking other campers to see what the general consensus is to get to the bottom of this. Daniel it's the law that you always cross safety chains. The citation is for unsecured load if law enforcement catches them uncrossed. Hope this helps.

Oh one more thing, the new hitch feature is when the hitch ball is properly in place the hitch latch will snap shut, so our fear that is not properly in place should not be a worry anymore.
So, true story, I (Daniel) once had my finger in between the hitch latch when it snapped in place. Let's just say I screamed a few things kids should NEVER hear! 🤣I've since ordered some ball lubricant (it's a thing - I promise) and have never had a problem since.
:).. funny stuff.. i remember our first year RV camping. you learn as you go for sure.. as long as nothing terrible happens.. its good to learn from mistakes... now the chock thing.. that made me ill to my stomach for you guys, especially on a very expensive new airstream.. chocks go under before disconnecting.. chocks stay on until youre connected.. you got lucky here as very flat but man oh man.. dont do that.. gave me a heart attack lol. i would also recommend an elbow for your fresh water intake so you dont damage your inlet there with the pressure of the hose hanging down... safe travels

I think the mistakes have definitely hardened us a bit, because we've become much more cautious! We've since moved up to full 4-wheel rubber chocks, x-chocks, and we've completely revamped how we hook up and disconnect! Good tip on the elbow connector. Also you can tell him when backing up driver side passenger side instead of left or right. I’ve learned it works better that way. But not bad on the backing up good luck.

Sandra Westley from the UK , absolutely they should have gone through everything with them, when we last exchanged ours, we parked next door to our new one opposite ways so we stepped from one step to the other step and transferred everything over, it took about 3 hours, they also ran through all the new switches and knobs everything, while we were there, then we left it over night went home slept and picked it up the next day to take it to our site in Devon where we leave it permanently, they get it out of storage and put it away,we have travelled all over Europe for 40ty years and loved every minute, it’s the best life.
Haha thanks, Jim! Moving full-time into an Airstream with no experience is a little insane, but so many people are doing it in this bizarre world we live in. We figured if we just shared our crazy the way it is, we'd probably learn a thing or two. 🤣 And, we totally have! The RV community on UA-cam is amazing. I'm pretty sure all of the advice we have received has kept us from injuring ourselves about a million times at this point. 🤣
Oh they sure are. We’re moving full time for this summer once our home sells in the spring into our 32’ fifth wheel. With the COVID restrictions we can’t travel so we’ve got a seasonal site for this summer. It’s too cold to full time in the winter here in Ontario Canada.
Oh, boy. If they were clapping, it was probably because we were finally leaving! I (Daniel) must have asked those poor people a hundred questions that day and they were so nice about it all. I was definitely overthinking things that day. 😂

@@Wanderlocal When we had our 18 flying Cloud 30 we loved the simplicity, with our new 30 Classic we love just how beautiful and elegant it is. I also love how easy the Airstream is to travel with, when we were traveling in Montana it was so nice to be able to pull off the side of the road and enjoy the views and not have to worry about someone driving buy hitting a slide. In the Classic I love the Alde system, it’s so quiet and once I figured out how the raise the shower water temperature the wife was pretty happy.
😂Oh, that Alde system! We took cold showers for two months before someone showed us how to activate the Alde Flow (continuous hot water). It was a life saver...especially, when you let your wife shower first! Daniel

Amen to that! It seems like every campground presents its own set of challenges i.e.: sewer is 20 ft away, water is on the opposite side, etc. 🤣Does it seem like that to you, or have we just had a run of bad luck at campgrounds?
So much tension reversing... A 2011 BMW 750i X-Drive, has 360 degree camera view, I would highly suggest getting an aftermarket 360 kit, or try to test drive an old BMW 7-series with that feature to see the benefits of having multiple cameras, not just the basic backup camera. The birds eye view makes a huge difference, and with your investment, it's a tiny bit of cost, and will lead to more comfort.

I want to get an Airstream and live in it on 2 acres we have. But, when I see all this complicated stuff, it gives me a headache. However, if I'm hooked up to electrical and water on my own property and not traveling with it, maybe it will be less complicated.
Believer72, you are spot on! If the Airstream were hooked up full-time and not moving weekly - like we do - there would only be a short list of tasks to do. It'd be a piece of 🍰. And, in all honesty, while everything seems super complicated (it totally is at first), once you get into a groove it becomes second nature. Like most things, it just takes a bit of practice. This is such a great tip, sirjasonakana! We are finally back on the road today after surviving the Texas freeze, and we moved our tire pressure monitor super high and the backup camera low so that we have better visibility. 💪
New to the Channel love the airstreams they are so pretty. That was an odd place for the sewer connection. Backing in is where we have the biggest issues.

This particular campground was called Indian Rocks Travel Park (indianrockstravelpark.com/) located in Largo, FL. It was the first cement sewer I'd seen, but, judging by your comment it sounds as if there are others out there! Good to know. Besides the cement sewer, how was your trip to Clerbrook? Hi Mario! We can drive on most roads, but we also use special phone apps to help us navigate. It keeps us from going down the wrong road, or under any low bridges. Also, if I see a turn that is too tight I just pass it and look for another street to turn on! Great question. Lauren + Daniel

Sean, good catch! We're constantly jumping time zones here in the US. Between the east and west coast, there are four different time zones. What makes it even more confusing is that not every state recognizes daylight savings, so there have been instances where we're even in the same state, but working from two different time zones! @@Wanderlocal took a single night test run to the beaches of Monterey Ca. And I have future reservation in Yosemite and Pinnacles national parks for the immediate future. But I am with you, backing up is a challenge and appears to be the number one past time of my fellow campers, watching other back up...hee, hee!
For real! Backing up is getting easier, but DANG it takes practice! So far it's only cost me a tail light. In my defense, that was the first day of ownership and it's been a lot better since. 🤞For Yosemite, how far out are you booking? I know some people book out far in advance, and we've been 'winging it', but I know it'll take a little more planning to get into some of the most sought after parks.
@@Wanderlocal I was able to grab some weekday reservation of a handful available for Jan, Feb and Mar in November, beyond that the reservations were not open yet. I never go in the summer to the valley as it is a mad house of people, but try to get into Tuolumne Meadows (High Country), first come first service option by being their first thing in the morning. Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks are also in the area and another great option for giant trees....
Great question, Roberto! Most campgrounds we park at run between $25-$50 per day. Some of the most expensive can be close to $100 per day, but that is rare. These have all of the hookups (power, water, sewer and sometime cable TV). If we stay for longer than a week, we can usually negotiate a better rate. If you were to boondock (no hookups) or stay at Harvest Hosts locations, then it would be free - but you usually can’t stay at those places very long.
🤣 That's exactly what they called me (Daniel) growing up! Maybe one of these days we'll have a large enough channel and I can talk Ralph Macchio into doing a cameo on one of our videos. That would be AMAZING!!!!! 🙌
Great tip! Someone also said to roll the chain twice to tighten up the slack so it's closer to the hitch. Have you heard that one yet? I haven't tried it, but was going to on the next hookup.
@@Wanderlocal Yes, that's a common tweak/adjustment - As long as the chains don't bind while making tight turns. Chain length should be set so that the hitch, if it were to come disconnected, would be caught and that it would not contact/touch the ground in a failure situation. ;- )
Tow-Balls break - but it's very rare.. You should always re-torque the ball annually. They come loose more often than we all realize.. If you don't have or carry the GIANT socket and tools necessary to tighten, stop by a U-Haul facility, they'll tighten it for you if you ask nicely... LOL - I've stopped in twice at U-Haul and they were very gracious.. I tipped the guy a couple bucks and he was super happy. Safe Travels...

All seriousness I would take a class on backing that Trailers before you cost yourself some big damage on that trailer . Just a few good points someone could show you would go a Long way . 😬
Truthfully, we looked for a class before we picked up our first Airstream in September. We didn’t find one we were excited about, but probably should have just done one anyway, as it probably would have kept us from jack knifing the trailer on day one and cracking a tail light. 🤦♀️ Any insight into finding a good class? I (Lauren) need to learn to tow/back it up soon, and would love a class!
This was actually the second Airstream we've picked up from them. Because of that, we asked them to let us set it up this time, so we could figure it out. We know what it's like to be on the road and not know how to work your own system, so we thought this could help. Whether it will in the long run or not, remains to be seen. 🤣
Susan, we really need to get these out of storage. We’re winter camping in TX right now and could have totally used head laps last night setting up our generators. We’re gonna be looking for those this morning! Good call. 💪
Congratulations! Your Classic looks beautiful - especially with your graphics and lighting. Don't feel bad about being "rusty" getting into that site - it looked super tight and I think it would have been challenging for anyone. BTW, because everyone beat me to the crossed chains answer, I'll provide another tidbit. At 5:10 it looks like you're hooking up your breakaway cable to a part of the hitch. The design intent of the breakaway switch is to apply the trailer's brakes should the entire hitch assembly depart the vehicle (the chains will handle other situations). Therefore, it should be attached to a part of the vehicle separate from the hitch or chains. As an example, we replaced one of the license plate screws with an eyebolt. And it can happen - we've had two friends who narrowly averted complete disaster when their hitch cracked and came apart.
Thanks! We're so happy with this unit, and glad we opted for the lighter interior, True story, after your initial comment about the license plate eye screw a while back, I went out and bought one. I have that set up now, and use a carabiner to connect it so I no longer have to pull the pin from the brake. It's been so much easier to set up, and I feel much better now that it's connected to a large eye screw in the plate. Thanks again for the tremendous tip!
Looks like Airstream customer service is wanting. How do they deliver such an expensive trailer and then just ignore the customer? I’m nervous just watching this guy. He has no clue.
To be fair to the Airstream Tampa team, this was the second Airstream they set us up with. 🤣 The first time they did EVERYTHING for us. But, we asked them to let us figure it out on our own this time. After all, you never know when you'll be on the road and need to know random stuff.
You bought a $160,000 airstream? Must be nice to have all that money. For 1/2 of that you could have bought any number of better RV's. To buy an airstream for some people is like others buying a Mercedes or Porsche, status. I know people are gonna hate on this, but c'mon. Air streams: leak like any other trailer, lose rivets, have similar components like fridges , water heaters, electronics, etc, like other rv's, depreciate like (maybe not as bad) as other rv's, but you paid $160K up front. You spent $160K and you can't even have a 60" X 80" residential queen bed, let a lone a king bed, you have limited storage because the trailer sits so low and has a rounded roof, and because the trailer sits so low, be careful not to damage the rear bumper, because your gonna drag it from time to time. Beware of hail because your aluminum dents easy. I don't mean to rain on your parade, that's not my intent, but for the money and the amount of camping most people do, you'd be better off to spend 1/4 of the price, take good care of another brand and use heated storage in winter, because anything sitting inside in heated storage is better than sitting outside in the harsh elements. Enjoy your rv. PS, could you imagine if people spend as much money proportionately on their daily driver car as some do on their rv, they'd be driving $500,000 cars.

🤣🤣🤣 Not a bad plan! Our newbie shenanigans are a mess. Thankfully we’re starting to get back in the swing of things now that we’ve been living in here for a month. But, avoid Texas if you can. We’ll be out here for a week or so before we head further west. 🤪
Crossing the chains provide two things 1. If the trailer comes disconnected from the hitch. The chains will cradle the hitch and keep the rig from planting in the ground and pole vaulting.
2. cradle effect will keep the rig behind you as you make your controlled emergency stop.
😬I'm almost sorry that I (Daniel) asked this question - now I have a visual in my head - but on the other hand happy that I did. Thanks for the education. Much appreciated, and It makes perfect sense in case of an emergency. Have you had any close calls yet?
I was leaving on a mission trip with a van of youth and a cargo trailer behind. The Pastor had hooked up the trailer. I was dumb not to check the hitch before getting in the drivers seat. We were on the freeway ramp when the trailer came off. SCAREY! The chain had been crossed, and luckily we had not picked up speed. Lesson: Always lock or use a pin in your hitch. And make sure there is not too much weight behind the trailer tires which put stress on the hitch.
As a former truck driver, I can’t recommend strongly enough that you drive with your lights on ALL the time. Vehicles that do have less accidents as people see you first. Also, hate to be a killjoy here but anything that obstructs your windshield view of vehicles is a safety no-no. This means place your papers in the glovebox (no reflections), place your GPS’s, phones and other items LOW enough so the tops do not raise above your hood line. It takes just a millisecond to NOT see that fast car coming because they are hidden until it’s too late behind your devices screens. I speak from experience.
Oh, former truck driver! I (Daniel) have so many questions, but I won't ask them all. 😀First off, GREAT tips on windshield visibility and you are 💯correct, it only takes a split second. Secondly, would it be overkill to install a semi horn on my F-250? It's the cars that want to creep into my lane while they're merging onto the highway at 20mph that drives me bonkers. I feel like a wake up horn may help, but I could be off my rocker! Thirdly, would you recommend I sign up for a fleet card? Do you think it would help to save on gas - enough for it to be worth it?
@@Wanderlocal - LOL! Overkill for an Air Horn, nah. Just personal preference. We were taught to break ourselves of the habit of honking your horn as it robs time that you should spend avoiding the (pending) accident. Most passenger truck air horns (and semi’s) operate off of a button or pull cord, not the steering wheel horn which is your first impulse, and involves taking your hands and eyes off the road to operate. It sounded like yours was a gas engine, sorry if I’m wrong. I’d consider a SAM’s or Costco card before fleet (Costco credit card saves you 4% on fuel too I think), but yes that saves you money IF you use a lot of fuel. Also know that you won’t be able to gas up all the time using it unless you stay to major cities and truck routes. Depending on the card, your volume, I would have my doubts. The benefits come for drivers close to the 100k miles a year category. Me, unless you are going to be on the road daily, skip it and use a gas price finder app. The exception might be if you can get in on a group plan (fleet of RV’ers). The only other tips I can think of might be never be the fastest vehicle, watch wind warning signs (might not matter as much w an airstream), and in general just go slower than you think you should. Sorry but I keep thinking about your lane incursion horn question. I’ve always avoided cities when possible, and if necessary pass in off peak traffic hours. If on the highway, I’d keep myself more aware in avoiding being beside a wandering vehicle. Never drive upset, learn to let people, expect people to pull in front of you and slow down. (They see big vehicle and think slow.) And unless they actually hit you, just relax, slow down, and chill... chose not to react. Sounds silly, but a zen attitude is the best safe driving technique EVER. 😎
@@Wanderlocal It's called an airhorn and if you go to "Keep Your Daydream" you can hear how theirs sounds. I would definitely install one, for no other reason than they sound so cool.
Crisscross the chains so that if the Airstream ever comes off the ball it lands in the nice little hammock you just made for it, instead of digging into the pavement at 70 mph. Also, watching you try to mount the license plate......lol. As an Airstream owner myself, I can honestly say without a shadow of a doubt that you will become very handy very fast. Welcome to the family.

We had to buy some at the beginning of this journey and it seems there are still a few tools missing - a rivet thingamajiggy here and another thingamabobby there! @@Wanderlocal I have a tool box specifically for rivet related things. I carry it anytime I travel. I also have an Olympic rivet shaver which has saved me so many times. I doubt you would need that on a trailer that new but you never know. I carry four tool boxes with me when I travel. Rivets, electrical, caulking, and standard tools. Usually when I get to a campsite the first thing I do is find what broke. hahaahhahahahaha
🤣That's amazing! What year is your Airstream? That is one of the main reasons we bought new, since we don't have these kind of skills. That being said, I'm super interested in what all goes in the rivet toolbox. We need to invest in some of this stuff but honestly don't have a clue where to start.
@@Wanderlocal a rivet tool for pop rivets, and find every kind of sized rivet Lowe’s has and just put them in your tool box. Lol. That might be overboard for a new trailer but I’ve used so many. From the inside skins to the window arms (those are a special order tubular rivet from Vintage Trailer Supply) to the running lights, the tail light cans, the door latch, everything! Mine is a 1971, 25’. Just had her professionally polished and the inside has been completely gutted and redone. My airstream and I have a love hate relationship that’s for sure. But at the end of the day, I don’t want anything else. I’d love to give you my number somehow? If you have questions maybe I could answer or help you trouble shoot. I don’t have a lot of experience with new airstreams but I’ve had to fix or redo almost everything on the old ones. With help from fellow air streamers. It literally takes a village. ☺️
When my wife and I bought our camper, the sale guy came out and went over everything. But when we got to our camp site, I couldn’t remember nothing. We basically just had to learn hands on experience.
That's exactly what happen to us when we picked up our fist Airstream, which is why we asked them to let us try to figure this stuff out on our own this time. There's just so much to learn when you get a new rig, that it's pretty much impossible to learn everything from a manual or a sales guy. It's a school of hard knocks education for sure! I’m really glad I found you and your husbands channel. My husband has talked me into buying an Airstream and living out of it for the duration of his military career or at least a couple of years anyway. I’m nervous to say the least but also excited. It will truly make our lives more simpler moving every few years with the military anyway. We are in the mist of ordering our Airstream now. You might consider placing the transfer case in 4L (Four Wheel Low) when backing up. It will allow you to literally idle into the camping spot, no throttle necessary. Keep in mind that while your truck is in ' 4L ' super tight turns are a bit of a problem.. Cheers!

Daniel, Backing can be stressful for both the driver and spotter. Remember, you are both on the same team and have the EXACT same goal. Lauren did an excellent job communicating with you - trust her. She also made the best recommendation in asking you to get out and survey the area. You guys are a great team and we enjoy watching your brilliantly produced videos! They are in a class of their own. Also, remember to turn on and test the power with your surge protector and then turn the “clean’” power off again PRIOR to connecting your power cable from your Airstream to the surge protector and turning it on again. You want to make sure the power is “all good” before connecting your rig. Safe travels - we’ll be watching!

Just a reminder on chocks. Never Ever remove the chocks until the truck is connected to the trailer. Otherwise good luck with the new AS.

Nice video, i am very happy for you!!! ... 2 tips (not to bore you with too many).... if you have cell signal, call each other on video and the spotter can show a full picture of what's happening while back parking. Driver watches video call and can see where to go. (you can put the ph on a windshield ph holder).
Before pulling into a site, we test the electrical box with our surge protector, once the surge protector does its thing and gives the "ok", then we pull in and connect all. Sometimes you set up and then realize the power box has issues and you have to move to another site.

Crossing chains is definitely for hitch catching in chains in event of separation, recommend turning them 2 full turns to take out some slack helping chains keep hitch seating when emergency situation.

Giving directions while backing can be a marriage stressor.
We use the passenger side/driver side commands. That leaves no doubt in the mind of the one behind the wheel which way the trailer needs to move.
Truth!!! And we love the passenger/driver side tip. I (Lauren) try to remember to do that. For some reason I seem to go back to “just straighten it up” often. Obviously not that helpful. 🤣🤷♀️

I don’t know if it’s 100% right, but I was once told that you cross the chains to help cradle the tongue and take more weight in the event the trailer comes off. But I could be wrong 🤷🏼♂️

@@Wanderlocal we have not, nor do I know anyone is. The name of the game when hooking up and starting drive day is routine routine routine! Do it the same way every time so it will feel wrong if it’s not right. Also, don’t rush it. Even if it’s raining out. Make it fun, but don’t rush hookup. If you do both of those, you will be good! 😎😎
So so true! I'm a bit OCD, so the process keeps me sane too. Oh, and about that rain. I've had to do it once, and it super sucked, but I managed to stick to the process. Whenever I see someone rushing to hook up, it gives me heart palpitations - especially, when you consider what's at stake!

You cross the chains just in case the hitch comes loose or off the ball it will fall right in the chains and the chains will keep it from scraping the ground.

Congrats on your new AS. LOVE the truck. We have an F150 and tow a Lance. Our first camper ever. Watched a TON of UA-cam vids. I went with a Hensley hitch - can open my tailgate without hitting the jack! ha. Also, I went with a hard-wired Surge/EMS, so wouldn’t have to worry about losing the portable one. We only camp part-time, but really enjoy getting away. Be safe!

I was always taught to hook them the other way, from under the truck out . Less chance of bouncing off.

Oh one more thing, the new hitch feature is when the hitch ball is properly in place the hitch latch will snap shut, so our fear that is not properly in place should not be a worry anymore.
So, true story, I (Daniel) once had my finger in between the hitch latch when it snapped in place. Let's just say I screamed a few things kids should NEVER hear! 🤣I've since ordered some ball lubricant (it's a thing - I promise) and have never had a problem since.
:).. funny stuff.. i remember our first year RV camping. you learn as you go for sure.. as long as nothing terrible happens.. its good to learn from mistakes... now the chock thing.. that made me ill to my stomach for you guys, especially on a very expensive new airstream.. chocks go under before disconnecting.. chocks stay on until youre connected.. you got lucky here as very flat but man oh man.. dont do that.. gave me a heart attack lol. i would also recommend an elbow for your fresh water intake so you dont damage your inlet there with the pressure of the hose hanging down... safe travels
Thanks for the feedback, Jim! You are spot on with your assessment - we were ill prepared for everything we'd have to learn. I think the mistakes have definitely hardened us a bit, because we've become much more cautious! We've since moved up to full 4-wheel rubber chocks, x-chocks, and we've completely revamped how we hook up and disconnect! Good tip on the elbow connector. Sandra Westley from the UK , absolutely they should have gone through everything with them, when we last exchanged ours, we parked next door to our new one opposite ways so we stepped from one step to the other step and transferred everything over, it took about 3 hours, they also ran through all the new switches and knobs everything, while we were there, then we left it over night went home slept and picked it up the next day to take it to our site in Devon where we leave it permanently, they get it out of storage and put it away,we have travelled all over Europe for 40ty years and loved every minute, it’s the best life.

Haha thanks, Jim! Moving full-time into an Airstream with no experience is a little insane, but so many people are doing it in this bizarre world we live in. We figured if we just shared our crazy the way it is, we'd probably learn a thing or two. 🤣 And, we totally have! The RV community on UA-cam is amazing. I'm pretty sure all of the advice we have received has kept us from injuring ourselves about a million times at this point. 🤣
Oh they sure are. We’re moving full time for this summer once our home sells in the spring into our 32’ fifth wheel. With the COVID restrictions we can’t travel so we’ve got a seasonal site for this summer. It’s too cold to full time in the winter here in Ontario Canada.

I (Daniel) think the one thing I admire the most about these is the fact that they're hand-made right here in the US and have that timeless look to them. It can be hard to distinguish between a new rig, and one that was built 10-20 years ago. What's your favorite thing about these Airstreams?
@@Wanderlocal When we had our 18 flying Cloud 30 we loved the simplicity, with our new 30 Classic we love just how beautiful and elegant it is. I also love how easy the Airstream is to travel with, when we were traveling in Montana it was so nice to be able to pull off the side of the road and enjoy the views and not have to worry about someone driving buy hitting a slide. In the Classic I love the Alde system, it’s so quiet and once I figured out how the raise the shower water temperature the wife was pretty happy.
😂Oh, that Alde system! We took cold showers for two months before someone showed us how to activate the Alde Flow (continuous hot water). It was a life saver...especially, when you let your wife shower first! Daniel

Was going to trade it in on that little Bambi but the salesman wanted my class C for free. Frustrating experience. I still have my class c and I’ve grown to really like it. So much tension reversing... A 2011 BMW 750i X-Drive, has 360 degree camera view, I would highly suggest getting an aftermarket 360 kit, or try to test drive an old BMW 7-series with that feature to see the benefits of having multiple cameras, not just the basic backup camera. The birds eye view makes a huge difference, and with your investment, it's a tiny bit of cost, and will lead to more comfort.

I want to get an Airstream and live in it on 2 acres we have. But, when I see all this complicated stuff, it gives me a headache. However, if I'm hooked up to electrical and water on my own property and not traveling with it, maybe it will be less complicated.
Believer72, you are spot on! If the Airstream were hooked up full-time and not moving weekly - like we do - there would only be a short list of tasks to do. It'd be a piece of 🍰. And, in all honesty, while everything seems super complicated (it totally is at first), once you get into a groove it becomes second nature. Like most things, it just takes a bit of practice. It was the first cement sewer I'd seen, but, judging by your comment it sounds as if there are others out there! Good to know. Besides the cement sewer, how was your trip to Clerbrook? Hi Mario! We can drive on most roads, but we also use special phone apps to help us navigate. It keeps us from going down the wrong road, or under any low bridges. Also, if I see a turn that is too tight I just pass it and look for another street to turn on! Great question. Lauren + Daniel

What makes it even more confusing is that not every state recognizes daylight savings, so there have been instances where we're even in the same state, but working from two different time zones! But I am with you, backing up is a challenge and appears to be the number one past time of my fellow campers, watching other back up...hee, hee!
For real! Backing up is getting easier, but DANG it takes practice! So far it's only cost me a tail light. In my defense, that was the first day of ownership and it's been a lot better since. 🤞For Yosemite, how far out are you booking? I know some people book out far in advance, and we've been 'winging it', but I know it'll take a little more planning to get into some of the most sought after parks.
@@Wanderlocal I was able to grab some weekday reservation of a handful available for Jan, Feb and Mar in November, beyond that the reservations were not open yet. I never go in the summer to the valley as it is a mad house of people, but try to get into Tuolumne Meadows (High Country), first come first service option by being their first thing in the morning. Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks are also in the area and another great option for giant trees....

I got a cuestion how much i have to pay to park my airstream in a park, by the way i your video..
Great question, Roberto! Most campgrounds we park at run between $25-$50 per day. Some of the most expensive can be close to $100 per day, but that is rare. These have all of the hookups (power, water, sewer and sometime cable TV). If we stay for longer than a week, we can usually negotiate a better rate. If you were to boondock (no hookups) or stay at Harvest Hosts locations, then it would be free - but you usually can’t stay at those places very long.

Great tip! Someone also said to roll the chain twice to tighten up the slack so it's closer to the hitch. Have you heard that one yet? I haven't tried it, but was going to on the next hookup.
@@Wanderlocal Yes, that's a common tweak/adjustment - As long as the chains don't bind while making tight turns. Chain length should be set so that the hitch, if it were to come disconnected, would be caught and that it would not contact/touch the ground in a failure situation. ;- )
Tow-Balls break - but it's very rare.. You should always re-torque the ball annually. They come loose more often than we all realize.. If you don't have or carry the GIANT socket and tools necessary to tighten, stop by a U-Haul facility, they'll tighten it for you if you ask nicely... LOL - I've stopped in twice at U-Haul and they were very gracious.. I tipped the guy a couple bucks and he was super happy. Safe Travels...
Ahhhhh, the tight turns! I hadn't thought about that aspect. If they were too tight, there'd be no slack for turns! Good call. 🙌

All seriousness I would take a class on backing that Trailers before you cost yourself some big damage on that trailer . Just a few good points someone could show you would go a Long way . 😬
Truthfully, we looked for a class before we picked up our first Airstream in September. We didn’t find one we were excited about, but probably should have just done one anyway, as it probably would have kept us from jack knifing the trailer on day one and cracking a tail light. 🤦♀️ Any insight into finding a good class? I (Lauren) need to learn to tow/back it up soon, and would love a class!

This was actually the second Airstream we've picked up from them. Because of that, we asked them to let us set it up this time, so we could figure it out. We know what it's like to be on the road and not know how to work your own system, so we thought this could help. Whether it will in the long run or not, remains to be seen. 🤣

Congratulations! Your Classic looks beautiful - especially with your graphics and lighting. Don't feel bad about being "rusty" getting into that site - it looked super tight and I think it would have been challenging for anyone. BTW, because everyone beat me to the crossed chains answer, I'll provide another tidbit. At 5:10 it looks like you're hooking up your breakaway cable to a part of the hitch. The design intent of the breakaway switch is to apply the trailer's brakes should the entire hitch assembly depart the vehicle (the chains will handle other situations). Therefore, it should be attached to a part of the vehicle separate from the hitch or chains. As an example, we replaced one of the license plate screws with an eyebolt. And it can happen - we've had two friends who narrowly averted complete disaster when their hitch cracked and came apart.
Thanks! We're so happy with this unit, and glad we opted for the lighter interior, True story, after your initial comment about the license plate eye screw a while back, I went out and bought one. I have that set up now, and use a carabiner to connect it so I no longer have to pull the pin from the brake. It's been so much easier to set up, and I feel much better now that it's connected to a large eye screw in the plate. Thanks again for the tremendous tip!

Looks like Airstream customer service is wanting. How do they deliver such an expensive trailer and then just ignore the customer? I’m nervous just watching this guy. He has no clue.
To be fair to the Airstream Tampa team, this was the second Airstream they set us up with. 🤣 The first time they did EVERYTHING for us. But, we asked them to let us figure it out on our own this time. After all, you never know when you'll be on the road and need to know random stuff.
You bought a $160,000 airstream? Must be nice to have all that money. For 1/2 of that you could have bought any number of better RV's. To buy an airstream for some people is like others buying a Mercedes or Porsche, status. I know people are gonna hate on this, but c'mon. Air streams: leak like any other trailer, lose rivets, have similar components like fridges , water heaters, electronics, etc, like other rv's, depreciate like (maybe not as bad) as other rv's, but you paid $160K up front. You spent $160K and you can't even have a 60" X 80" residential queen bed, let a lone a king bed, you have limited storage because the trailer sits so low and has a rounded roof, and because the trailer sits so low, be careful not to damage the rear bumper, because your gonna drag it from time to time. Beware of hail because your aluminum dents easy. I don't mean to rain on your parade, that's not my intent, but for the money and the amount of camping most people do, you'd be better off to spend 1/4 of the price, take good care of another brand and use heated storage in winter, because anything sitting inside in heated storage is better than sitting outside in the harsh elements. Enjoy your rv. PS, could you imagine if people spend as much money proportionately on their daily driver car as some do on their rv, they'd be driving $500,000 cars.

Grace, absolutely. This was our second Airstream pickup though and we wanted to try to figure it out on our own, just like we’d have to do on the road if something wasn’t working. 🤷♀️
