Great vid. I really like what u are doing with these old optiplex and showing others they can get a great starting point for really cheap or in this Case(literally) a great gaming PC not just a starter.
Great instructional video on removing the drone cage. It's worth mentioning any issues that might arise from propriety components, particularly if you replace the power supply . Some Dell and lots of HP's don't use the standard connectors used by off the shelf powersupplies however this can normally be overcome with cheap adapters. HP can be particularly annoying like in later PCs (6th gen and later) it has a sensor that gives an annoying message before booting that you have to press F1 on to continue of the front usb3 is not connected. Because of using one of the pins on the socket as the sensor you can't round this by using an adapter from the front I/o to a pcie card. Always worth watching a video like yours on the particular model of Dell/HP/Lenovo that a person wants to upgrade.
Nice tutorial! I was originally going to do this in my Dell Precision T1600 case but I decided, for now anyway, to just purchase a ePCI riser cable, 3D print out a stand, and mount my RX 580 outside of the case. The only problem I have is I am afraid of my curious kitty playing with the GPU fans! I already caught her playing with the CPU fan once as I heard a "brrr...brrr!" sound and saw her hitting the fan with her paw! Lol!! It was very funny at the time, but the GPU fans are MUCH bigger and faster and may hurt her. I may have to go back to your idea here, but I may have a problem with the SATA ports being blocked. I already have that problem with the old HD 7770 card I put in there for now. I had to disconnect the DVD player. Not a big deal since I have several USB portable ones. Your video makes me want to give it another try when (and if 😕) my health ever improves. Looking forward to your next video. Be well and Happy Holidays!!! 👍👍
@@kennyskomputers1009 I actually tried the 90 degree ones and still no go with the DVD port and the HD 7770. It worked for the SSD and the storage hard disk ports. It was just a tiny fraction too high for the DVD port as it was directly under the GPU.
Yea the 90 degree sata cables avoid that issue, but if your card is too long & wide like the 980 ti I was planning to use, it also runs into the front usb plug on the 710 mobo. Damn near broke it before I noticed it was catching. Had to settle for using an old radeon r5 2gb card I had laying around until I can buy something better that is short enough to fit.
Technically you don't have to remove the motherboard to remove the drive cage. You can drill it out with the motherboard in and then blow the case out with a can of air or shopvac.
Yes, you don't have to remove the board. But having it removed from the system can prevent aluminum shards from sticking to the motherboard, causing a short. Plus it can make it harder to safely cut the bay out without causing damage.

I dunno if I'd go through all of that effort to put a 3070 in an old optiplex like that. You'd be better off getting a Dell XPS system with a 6th or 7th gen CPU, DDR4 RAM support and you don't have to pull metal drive cages out. On top of that, you need a 25-pin to 8-pin power supply cable for Dell's proprietary 8-pin connector for any aftermarket power supply becase 280W is not enough for any RTX 3000 series card.

It’s a little button that confirms to the co outer if the side panel is installed or not. It’s not an important piece by any means.
Mine it slightly bends because of the rams being to close
I installed a dual fan rtx2060 with ease, but removing them is hard.
They’re easy to remove if you press the button on the bottom so it just pulls out!
"How to CPU bottleneck your gpu with a windows 7 era PC"
did you encounter an issue with the sata ports on the motherboard blocking your gpu?
I just used a 90 degree sata cable!
@@kennyskomputers1009 Why are you being evasive about those cables that have blocked ports by the GPU? While others are commenting favorably about this video, I can't get over the fact that you just stated (only when asked btw) that you used one 90s degree cable. When actually for this model there should be another SATA cable involved, plus the USB and power I/O cable to deal with. That cable MUST be connected, yet you've glossed over it. There are "lateral" 90 degree SATAs (recommended), and a USB front panel extension cable that can be 90 degree down (to the right). I think you have an obligation to explain this, or else you are sending people on a bum steer.
Can you do something similar with a small 5040?
I don’t have any with me currently, but maybe!
Real question how will this work with a 250w power supply and no 8pin cables, like are you using sata to 8 pin or 6 pin i did recently see toasty bros slap a 4060 on an optiplex with stock psu so i have no clue
As said in the video you will probably need a new psu.
@@kennyskomputers1009 ah alr
Just wondering, What about the power connectors?
I’d recommend replacing the PSU with something like a Corsair CX600. The stock psu doesn’t have the right cables, and is underpowered.
I would love to see him do this to a optiplex 980
I have the older model like 380 the cpu fan is gigantic with plastic cone like, i try to put 9800gtx and not fit

Go Purdue!
Boiler Up!
What GPU do you recommend for a e3-1290 v2 it's in a Optiplex like this one, I want the best GPU that'll last me some years
WellX if your on a budget the GTX 970 or 1070 is a good all-round gpu!
@@kennyskomputers1009 you think the 1070 will be good for say the next 5 years?
@@anthonyk Not really, It's already growing long in the tooth, it might be could for a year if you are lucky.
My gtx 1650 can run steam games and ca:go …. Any triple A games are on lowest setting and still crashes after 3 games
@@TheeDanIslander Dying GPU lol
what was the point of unplugging the motherboard?
To prevent metal shavings from damaging it.
My gpu kinda hits the ram holders and I have to push them out so….
I thought you have to change the psu in order to play on the gpu
Depends on the gpu you’re using.
@@kennyskomputers1009 ooh ok
Can i add a amd 580 8gb ram card to a dell optiplex 7010?
You sure can! Just make sure to run a higher wattage PSU to support the new gpu.
What gpu would you recommend for a i5 4570
GTX 970 or 1070.
i hope it works in a 990 optiplex
How the heck am i gonna get my ssds in
nice video. hate it whenever I can't fix my rtx 4090 in a dell optiplex 390
incase you missed it, this is a not so funny joke. I don't want to hear anything about bottlenecks.
Just because you said you don’t want to hear anything about bottlenecks, I’m inclined to let you know… I think that may have a slight bottleneck… 🤣
Just because you said you don’t want to hear anything about bottlenecks, I’m inclined to let you know… I think that may have a slight bottleneck… 🤣
Could I add the Samsung 970 evo m.2 nvme sed to the optiplex?
Sadly, this specific Optiplex doesn’t have any spots on the mobo to mount m.2 drives :/
RTX-4090?
Doesn't apply to rtx 4090. I was quite baffled when it wouldn't fit but looked at the immense size of the card . :D
nice vid tho
Hey! So I’ve actually built a Optiplex that includes a 4090 recently! It might just be your model. If you want a parts list and pics just email me!
Now Sata ports are hidden.
That’s what 90 degree ports are for!
Did you upgrade the motherboard? The stock mother board in a dell optiplex is only rated to a gtx 1650… anything higher and the gpu won’t work unless you upgraded the mother board .
I did with mine, but cannot force myself to get rid of those drive bays. I’m limited to 241 mm right now.
Yeah, I was just using the 3070 for reference to show how large of a gpu you can fit.
What would i do with the SSD drive?
You can really just place your ssd anywhere in the case where it isn’t interfering with mowing parts.
I can put rtx 4070 in optlix 9020 core i74770 Will it work or not?
Not a good idea whatsoever but it would work with the right psu I guess 🤷♂️
orange
Just use a sawsall 😂😂😂
you are gonna have so much cpu bottlenecking for that
Not too bad. But this was just for demo.
Rip thermal
Thats gonna cause a major bottleneck
It’s just for demonstration. That’s all I had lying around at the time.
NO WAY It fits
So I can put a 4090 in a sff😂😂😂
Well yes but actually no.
I need help hoe to fix my rtx 2060 on my dell optiplex 3020
just did this with only a screwdriver, i do not recommend!!!
Wow… that seems like it must’ve been a pretty difficult thing to do!
@@kennyskomputers1009 it definitely was
OMG talk about bringing a dinosaur back to life lol! Kudos to you for doing this I might try this on one of my “computer mad scientist” days in my lab 😄🥼🔬
wow
Then cry as the GPU uses so much power that your system is broken.
easy PSU swap
Not to be rude... But i think your gonna have a huge bottleneck with the CPU in this build, i think the most common CPU with the 7010 or 9010 are the i5-3470.. i also have a dell 7010 but its a SFF with the GTX 1630 LP and an i7-3770K, please don’t ask why i choose that GPU, 19 yo me didn’t know that it was a scam. vawesome channel btw!
Yeah, the 3070 was just a spare card I had, so I was using it for demonstration for the video.
Can you put a 2022 m atx motherboard in this optiplex
I have a dell optiplex 7020 mt could i use a rtx 3050
With the correct psu and adapters it shouldn’t be much of an issue.
