I have this issue too, and am thinking of buying lights that replace the rear bumper reflectors. Not high up, but probably better than nothing (dont have roof racks). Trying to find some with indicators in them too.
@Mels Big Van Small World Hi Mel if you need to pull extra cables through an insulated space try using a plastic coated curtain wire with a small screw eye in each end. It should have enough rìgidity in it to feed it down through the insulation then just attach the cables to the screw eye and pull the cables back through from which ever end suits you best. Another question for you if you wanted to fit a rear dash cam and you don't have any rear windows like in your van is there an alternative way of doing it other than installing a multi camera system that monitors the whole of the outside of the van I think there's one called Backeye R 360 from a company called Brigade Electronics who knows they might even be prepared to sponsor a video
Mel, have you taken the van outside in daylight to check the lights for visibility? I purchased some very similar last year and withing minutes through them in the trash. They had very low light lumens cobs/LEDs in them In fact you could not see them in daylight. Hoping they have been improved since then and yours are much better. Stay safe and enjoy.
Just a little note to yourself and others. Maybe consider putting some small front and rear lights that are run of your leisure batteries that can be switched on and of. As a HGV driver there are a lot of reports in certain parts of the country that fines are being issued if you park unlit overnight in a layby.
This is a rule in the highway code, it only applys to laybys and on road parking on roads with a speed limit OVER 30 MPH Rule 249 All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or a lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph (48 km/h). - Law RVLR reg 24 Rule 250 Cars, goods vehicles not exceeding 2500 kg laden weight, invalid carriages, motorcycles and pedal cycles may be parked without lights on a road (or lay-by) with a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) or less if they are at least 10 metres (32 feet) away from any junction, close to the kerb and facing in the direction of the traffic flow in a recognised parking place or lay-by. Other vehicles and trailers, and all vehicles with projecting loads, MUST NOT be left on a road at night without lights. - Laws RVLR reg 24 & CUR reg 82(7
Good job Mel - hopefully your followers will follow your lead on this too - it’s illegal for a reason but no one is ever told that by the sellers. Rear lights MUST be seen from 45 degrees out to the sides. Well done in lighting the way for the rest 👍🏻
I'm not sure how and where you bolted the wheel carrier on. It does look like it could have been bolted on further to the offside, without fouling the leading rear door. Could it have been fitted a bit higher? I'm not trolling, I own a Sprinter day van/stealth wkend camper. I enjoy the content.
Given the time that you have had the spare wheel on the back, I am surprised your Van passed its MOT. Construction and use legislation comes to mind. Lucky you havent been stopped or involved in an RTC.
I know it seems a solution, but that doesnt comply with the current regulations (at least in the European Union). the lights must be inside the legal position range (see Hella s website for the pdf document detailling it for reference), and also you cant intall any aditional lights more than the reglamentary admited. Also, due to the problem you have realized, the tire carrier is not legal neither since the mandatory visual angles in the horizontal plane are not met. The only legal solution is mounting the wheel above 1,6 m from the ground (yeah, I know the wheel weights more than 40 kgs, but.....)

Did the wire of the lights have a plug on??? Why not just drill a hole in your aluminium and leave the light intact and thread wires that way so they don't have to go over the top??? On connecting up part you show a a thing black wire your connecting ???
@@BigVanSmallWorld hard wired to the lights yes. Other end of the wire you threaded through your gland at the top. So why couldn't you drill a hole in your aluminium and thread it through there??? Instead you routed it over???
Mel. You don't in general get things wrong. Buy watching you I have learnt alot. You should have your own program on tv. But you know the government will jump on it and try to earn money some way out of people trying to live there life in a indipendent way.

Beside larger tires you can use the old space to add an extra water tank. Love your vids and appreciate your hard work. 😊
That's a great idea!
Brilliant idea

Well done great video good luck 👍🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦
Turn them up the other way and you won’t see the number plate lights👍
If you look at the thumbnail you’ll see that’s what I ended up doing 👍👍👍
Good old money having a slash on your box 😂 excellent upgrade 👍🏻
A nice solution.

Yeah definitely worth the effort 👍🤓👍
Brilliant addition! Nicely thought out, Mel! Keep up the great work.
thank you
Good stuff Mel,
Keep it simple,keep it safe.
Cheers Dave 👍🤓👍
GREAT JOB. But Be careful of corrosion between alumium and galvanised steel.
Ok, thanks
Also an issue if using stainless brackets next to galv. You can buy top hat washers made of nylon, for just such a job.

Just get some of the 'Highway Maintenance ' decaling and van will now be a work van! 😂😂😂

Troll of the weeeek😂
As my comment said. Plus I believe Mel is a hgv driver. Common sense prevailing
Has the van passed an MOT since the wheel carrier was fitted.
Yes it has
Additional lighting is good but why didn't you just move the spare wheel up to where the window would be.
Cant you just discon the Number plate lights at the top as not needed?
Those side lights look white ish to me I must be going colour blind.
why not wire the wihte lightst o the reverse lights that would be cool and well seen
that's a great idea
good day mel can i buy those magnets please
Hi I’m actually using them for holding my tools to the back of my workbench and I have to say they are not very good 😂👍

If your saying you've got a dangerous wheel carrier on ,why keep it on,just to put extra lights on ,and ruin your van.
