I love this! I have 24' pontoon boat of similar vintage. I've put a 108lb thrust Motorguide trolling motor on it which moves it okay in benign conditions, but won't go against much of a current or wind. I also have an arched solid top on it that is about 8' x 16' I'd like to cover with solar panels. I've heard negative reports on the life span of the flexible solar panels - but the weight of solid panels seems prohibitive. What's your guess about the amount of solar wattage you'd need to yield a near infinite range at a reduced speed? Do you trailer your boat much? Thanks for your post, good pace very informative. I look forward to your progress. (Liked and subscribed!)
I would not use the semi flexible solar panels they just wont hold up for more than a year or two. If weight is the biggest concern the CIGS very flexible solar panels are nearly ideal. However, they are very expensive…. I have ordered 5 100 watt biracial panels (approx $350) and plan to put them on the rear as a fain tail extension. I was going to do a top but there are several problems with that for me I’ll explain in the next video…
@@Webcrawler45 Thanks for you prompt reply Jeff. I'm guessing your lift is being an issue for a top? I'll look into CIGS, I didn't know their price had come down or that they are available bifacial. I'm curious about your CALB battery bank. I see the individual cells online - did you have to add your own BMS? Is that just half your cells? Sorry for all the questions but your setup is so close to mine I'm excited to see how well you have pulled it off. Will it help you any if I click through to tiny boat nation or mention you to them. Thanks again.
@@DavidBeede My covered dock is the main issue. There is not enough clearance when the lake is full for a top to be up that I can walk under. . So I would have to make it able to be lowered which makes it quite top heavy or flimsy...
I am really interest in the solar top you mentioned Jeff. Can you provide more info on that? I’m currently running a Spirit Evo Plus with solar charge controller on my 24’ pontoon boat on an electric only lake. It works great for my boat and we can get up to 5mph of speed even with just the Spirit Evo.
@@john6268 no real range worries. If you have to make a Long trip all you have to do is slow down to about 4 mph and it will run like that for about 64 miles....(lake is only about 20 miles long). at 3 mph it will got for over 100 miles...(you are just not getting anywhere a hurry)
Nice setup!
As pontoon market explodes the need for clean power and low operating coat will draw the masses to electric powered boats. Kudos for this video.
Great work Jeff.

😮😮😮😮pontoons aren’t light Waight but you are really moving forward but still cool

Just adding 10-12 100 watt semi flexible panels on an aluminum frame. I am adding a 35A 150v Victron Solar charge controller.
very nice
What model depth finder are you using? Where under the boat did you attach the sensor head? Thanks.
1300watts will get me 7mph on my canoe so your speeds are really good for a pontoon. :)
put three or four adults in it and it slows down a bit...
What do you think the boat weight with everything that you have onboard
What did you say was the name of the motor
What size and weight is your pontoon? What's the pontoon size 23" 25"?
24" pontoons. Not sure of the weight, but probably around 1,300 lbs..
@@Webcrawler45 thanks. No range issue? I have a 16' with 25" tubes with a 9.9 and considering going electric.
