Mark is the man! You're very brave for getting your palms done. What did you put on them? I have endured an entire arm blackout but I do not think I can handle the pain of a palm tattoo. We got pretty close to my palm on my wrist and it killed! I am seeing him next month on the 22nd!
Dude, this is one of the best insights to a blackout I have seen. Super informative and nicely explained. I am reasonably heavily tattooed and am toying with having a half-sleeve blackout over work I already have done. But, I doubt I will as it's not a bad tattoo I have it's an all one piece from wrist to chest. But I love Blackout tatts. Yours is done REALLY well. One of the best I have seen, looks dope man.
Wow, thank you for the huge compliment I appreciate it. Mark is one of the best black out artists in the country and I am very lucky to have him work on mine. I had more done in December and I am wrapping up with one last sessions in February. I will post a final update video with the finished sleeve. I love the way they look too but they're not for everyone. It is a massive commitment that you cannot turn back from! If you do decide to go through with it I hope this video helps give you insight. It is very painful!

yeah i took a week off from work just to take care of it as much as i can and rest. I'm going to a place called Adrenaline in Montreal, Canada
@@oliverramjuttun3239 good move taking the time off of work! Try and rest as little as possible and wear very loose clothing or no clothing at all! The first 4 to 5 days suck!
yeah been 3 days my hand still looks like a boxing glove, pretty brutal blackwork, my wrist was the worst. I'll keep putting ice and take care if it. But yeah i love it💪

Wish I saw this video a week ago before I started blacking out my arm. I also underestimated the healing and scabbing I'd get from it and I'm definitely planning around it when I get more black filled in lol.
Yeah I feel the same way which is why I made the video to sorta educate new comers to black work so they can avoid some of the pitfalls I encountered. How was your healing process?
Yep got my arm done in one session two days ago and my hand and arm are like a balloon. How long did it take for the swelling to start reducing for you guys?

Sorry to hear that you're going through that. I know exactly what it feels like and it sucks. Just know that you can change the way you feel about it if you're willing to make to commitment to do heavy blackwork. Where are you located? There are many great blackout artists all over the globe.

I'm watching this from Mexico, and if it's hard to find info or artist of blackouts in the US...

Hello from Mexico, the healing process is some what similar to healing a regular tattoo. The biggest problem is the swelling. You have to take it easy, lots of ibuprofen and apply ice packs to the swelling. Make sure not to apply the ice pack directly to the tattoo. Sometimes it takes 4-5 days for the swelling to go down. Make sure to wash it a couple times a day and keep it clean with unscented soap and let it air dry. Do not pat/blot with a towel. Do not scrub it and make sure to use cold water. Once it dries and the skin feels tight apply a thin layer of Aquaphor, don't overdo it and make it greasy. That is what worked best for me. Remeber all skin/body types are different so each person will have their own unique reaction to the tattoo. All the best!

Started my blackout sleeve last week. Definitely underestimated the swelling. Geez those first few days were pretty agonizing.
Yeah the swelling is tough! How was the pain during the tattoo?
@@Sako-Taco Definitely took more of my stamina than usual! Was expecting a long session and my limit is around 8 hours usually but tapped out after only 5 this time (elbows and ditch took the life out of me). The only part that's "less bad" I'd say is once the artist is done completely with one part they move and don't touch it again.
Also with how fast the skin starts to swell and adrenaline goes down I think it's better to have short 1-5 minute max breaks. Had a 30 min break in the around hour 4 cuz of some issues at the studio and coming back under the needle was real rough after that point.
Love this video man! Love the guitar covers too. I’m in a very similar situation with my blackout. Only have one more session then I’m gonna do some classic American traditional pieces with white ink. Do you plan on going over the blackout?
I do like the way that white over black looks I've noticed that once the ink settles the white becomes very opaque and subtle. I've endured enough pain to black out my right arm to last a life time. Dont need any more! Where did you get yours done at and how long did it take? What were some of the challenges you faced with your black out process?
@@Sako-Taco fair enough man that pain from getting a blackout is like no other. It took a solid 24ish hours to complete. I got it done at Think Tank in Denver, CO. I definitely wasn’t expecting the healing process. I also get a ton of questions about it out in public because it’s still a fairly new thing and a lot of people genuinely don’t understand it
My first tattoo was in my hand, a blackout starting in the middle of the fingers up to the wrist, it looked like shitt, so i redone it and done the forearm as well, now its looking good, not as solid as this gentlleman's arm but i still like it
Wow now that is a bold move having your first tattoo on your hand! I am glad you love your blackout tattoo! The great thing is touch ups or reworking it is easy because it's just black ink! Cheers

Awww sorry mate! Not trying to throw any personal jabs at anyone. If you plan/save for long enough you should be able to finish that sleeve soon!

Take your time in finding an artist who specializes in this technique. When black outs are done bad it is almost better to have the original tattoo than have a poorly done black out. Whereabouts are you located? I know of many artists around the globe that do this technique.
Lucky I started getting tattoos at 23 I am now 28 and I still not done with my sleeve. Takes allot of time for me to map out and think what I want and what I like to go with the flow. Since I grown up being this emo kid with ideas that’s still the same but allot allot better since nowadays improvement art style and inks I was set. My only regret is not putting one tattoo I have on my leg then my arm definitely was my 2nd tat and was overthinking what if’s.
You're definitely doing it the right way. That was my biggest problem is that I didn't map it out, just randomly placed crap on my arm. The person who I was in my 20's is a far cry from the person today who is approaching 40!

It all depends on what you want and what you like. I am all about symmetry and the "go big or go home" mindset. Doing a full limb all black is a massive lifelong commitment that cannot be undone. I only did mine that way because I had no useable blank skin to incorporate other designs or patterns. If you have free space, use it and incorporate the black out with it. If you hate it down the road you can always black out the remainder! Best of luck!
Honestly bro, the look of this looks cool too me, I have a couple tattoos on my forearm that I really hate and regret and was thinking about getting this done, I have a black/grey wing tattoo on my hand that i love and I think will look good with it, I’ll probably end up doing it(: thanks for the insight, i won’t sit here and ask you the exact amount of how much this costs, but can you tell me if it’s cheaper then getting a full sleeve of realism?
Depends on what state you're in and how in demand your tattoo artists is. The better the work, the higher the cost and the longer the wait to get tattooed. I live in CA and pay more for my tattoos than say someone in the Midwest or elsewhere. When I first started getting tattooed by Mark, the price was very high but once you develop a rapport with your artist and see them regularly, they usually cut back on the prices. For someone at Mark's level or let's say Hoode, who's the GOAT of blackwork, you're looking at easily $250+ an hour. Nikko Hurtado charges over $500, and that was years ago. Like I say, "A good tattoo is not cheap, and a cheap tattoo is not good." I hope that helps.
I can relate to this so much . Did exactly the same . Three artists later my arm is a mess . I have worn long sleeves for almost three years , even at home alone I cant look at it . We had a heatwave last summer & it was awful covering up in long sleeved tops . I knew I couldn’t face another summer like that so I started researching & have found an artist who specialises in blackwork . Its my only option but I think it looks cool anyway . I’m getting my full arm done in two weeks . Cant wait to have the option to wear t shirts again
You are going to be so much happier in your own skin, trust me. Just be patient and know that it's going to take multiple sessions to get it really saturated and black. Another thing I forgot to mention is that you may see scars after your tattoo has healed. If your previous tattoo artists had a heavy hand, it scars the skin and for some reason the black work makes it pop out. I had a star on my right wrist and even though it is blacked out I can still see the shape of the star because the heavy tattoo created scar tissue. Good luck with your black out!

In two months I'm getting wrist to shoulder black out with some negative space floral. Should I dry heal or a link to properly heal.
I would advise against dry healing. My first go around I used A and D ointment and my body did not like it. The rest of my sessions I used Aquaphor and my skin healed wonderfully. Make sure you clean it gently with unscented soap, let it air dry not patting with a towel and a thin film of Aquaphor whenever the skin feels tight. That is what worked for me. Remember, everyone's skin is different best of luck with your tattoo, hope you love it like I love mine!
What about sun and blackout tattoos. Isn't the skin mode susceptible to sun burn?
Good question! Black absorbs heat and sunlight so yes, a blackout tattoo can burn more easily. My arm gets super hot really fast when exposed to direct sunlight. I wear sun block or a long sleeve shirt to protect it depending on how I am feeling.
I just got my calf blacked out. The swelling is serious. It's not like a normal tattoo and it's 💯 a technique an artist will need experience doing.
Ouch, I am sure blacking out the calf must have sucked. I am doing laser removal on my calf and legs and it hurts a bunch. Bet it is safe to assume that blacking out that spot doesn't tickle. Its been my experience that the farther away you are from your heart, the less tattooing hurts for some reason.
@@Sako-Taco It didn't hurt during the tattoo. The swelling was almost as bad as when I broke my ankle.

when i had my sleeve and hand blacked out it turned a light grey. i got it all blacked out again and it was a dark grey. i got it blacked out a 3rd time and it was like a light black. now ive just got it done a 4th time and while the hand/wrist/shoulder are dark black, the inside/out upper arm and elbow area the ink is not staying in so its lighter. how is everyone else getting dark black on the fist try? my artist uses black ink too
I am sorry to hear that. In darker lighting my arm looks black. When I am out in the sun it's more of a grey. Remeber most artists on social media post only their best photos and a lot of times they use filters. I've heard people with really pale white skin get true dark black. Remember, everyone's skin and body is different so we dont all react the same. Sorry you've had to endure so much pain!
It takes alot of packing in the ink the hand is hard because the skin is already thin for the hand you just gotta baby it and avoid rubbing and sun exposure a buddy of mine would make permanent tats temporary on his hands from cutting carpets 5 days a week your skin also sheds faster on the hand
@@jaybiddy955 Very true. I had script lettering done on the working side of my right hand. I used to do heavy construction for a utility company out here in LA and the ink fell out almost immediately from wearing gloves and friction.

I've sat a total of 18 hours broken up into 4 or 5 different sessions. "One shot" blackouts are a myth and most Instagram tattoo artists are full of it! Touch ups are absolutely neccessary but what's most important is proper aftercare of your tattoo. That is what makes it or breaks it as far as healing and ink retention. Hope that helps!
How many hours would you say the blackout took? Sorry trying to prep for that and I’m not concerned with price but like you said planning for time off, so I was curious as the time/sessions
In total I have sat for roughly 16-17 hours. Usually 3 to 4 hours of tattooing per session. If you have a smaller framed body then a "one shot" black out is possible but is incredibly taxing on the body. If possible I would recommend breaking it up into multiple sessions. Good aftercare is crucial to having the tattoo heal properly. Please take good care of it while you're healing.
@@Sako-Taco I’ve got a full color sleeve on my left, and a blank canvas on my right which might be semi helpful, but I am around your build. 6’4” 215-220lbs so im sure the 16 hour mark will be about right. I will definitely baby it and take the time after. I appreciate your help and this video!

@@Sako-Taco it went well. Pain was OK, but the last 2 hours were not so fun. 9 hours in total... Healing is great after 1 week and almost no dry skin anymore. Next session in 6 weeks to complete the rest ;-)
@Christian awesome! Glad to.here it went well. I just got more work done myself on Thursday. We did about 3 hours on my left arm. Blacked out my wrist and elbow AGAIN. Touch ups are always necessary, it Def was not fun. Who is your artists might I ask?

I am sure you can do any color you'd like. Color doesn't matter tbh. The most important thing is that the artist who tattoos you is really good at saturation. I know that @hoode215 has done a solid blue "black out" and it came out super sick!
Have you seen any blackouts on dark skinned people, im getting half forearm on tuesday and as awesome as i know itll look on me im just curious
I haven't seen any heavy blackwork in person but I have seen pictures online. It depends on the depth of your complextion but I have seen POC on Instagram with amazing blackout/blackwork tattoos.

That blackout looks really black, mine looks between gray and green.
Everyone's complexation is different so the black in settles different for everyone. Mine looks dark dark black in dim lighting and looks like a blueish black in daylight
What ink did they use on your arm?

I feel you. There's days when I tell myself I want to do the other arm. Then I get touch ups or more work done on my right arm and I realize that ideas is absolutely bonkers. 17 hours of torture was enough for me.

Yeah, my right arm was full of pastels. Blues, greens, orange and reds. Lasering it off would have been very difficult at best.

its pointless tattoos should have meaning and info about innerworld of you ! but today tattoos become art and artist have much more force on client and what he want . and most of people become as canvas for weraing paitings and ideas of someone else (the artist) shock wave and that social strike become a norm and fashio today . and blackout is just another wave of shocking which modern tattoos lack off today! its like in 90 guys weren ear rings and many metal heads also.. but not anymore coz it become lame..tattoos in most way have lost the meaning.... skuls clocks birds... meaningles shit|
Everything is subjective to ones own bias and opinion. The beautiful thing about our own bodies is that they are ours and we can do to them whatever we see fit. I am not here to impress or shock anyone. Life is way too short to let the opinions of others affect ones own life. Also, tattoos do not have to be ANYTHING nor do they have to have meaning, especially not to other people.

Mines healed darker in areas and some dropped out especially the elbow my arm ballooned I was shaking like crazy having my arm blacked out
Yep, I straight up wen into shock my second session. I sat for 4 hours and by the time we were done I was cold and shaking. Blacking out is no joke! You for sure have to go back for touch ups for pure saturation. One shot blackouts are a myth!
