awesome video, I have seen them hand held shrinkers just couldnt justify the cost this looks like an amazing solution, hats off to you sir and welcome back
Hello.. Thats a Great and cheap Solution for an very old Problem.. I try a few Times, since many Years to shrink Metall by Hand.. Mostly not Satisfied.. My next Project is to recreate your Tool.. Greets from Germany..
Well done on your skill on tig welding I've been battling for a year and a half now convinced that new welder is faulty . Thank u for your great video. Wayne sunny South Africa
great idea…I've had some jaws in the drawer for years waiting to build a suitable machine…but this way I can use them in a short time and with the convenience of having a portable and effective tool in any case!!! Thanks
Very well done, it looks as if you have a real nice tool there for next to nothing, if you have the shrinking dies already. Plus you have produced an nice clear video. A⭐ 👍
Brilliant Tom. Good to see you again! Like people are saying, cost of the jaws would put DIY'ers like me off, but, having said that, we all know that the cheap Chinese shrinker/stretchers are just crap and don't even work straight out of the box, so £175 for something that works is good value really.
Tom, well done‼️👏👍 I could have done with that when I replaced the rusted out flanges on the front Mud Shields of my ‘35 Austin Seven ARQ Ruby. Had to resort to ‘cut n shut’ but still happy with the results though. I know what my next tool project is.
Well done . And with a few minor tweaks they could be easily be made to be interchangeable between being hand held and stand mounted foot pedal operated able to quickly change from one to the other as you please.
That tool gave me great ideas, thanks!! Maybe you could think about making a tool such as the Ox Planishing Hammer, it costs a whopping 900 dollars, and a DIYer cant aford it. It must be such a useful tool to have!!
Hi Tom. I was just looking yesterday to see if I had missed any of your videos and here you are. I don't do the instgrammie thing as I have enough to do in life now. ;) Very interesting tool. Nicely done!

Tom, A man after my own heart! I try not to reinvent the wheel bit sometimes the odd little mod can make a world of difference. What do you think you could sell them for and would you be interested in making 10 or 20 sets for your viewers 🤔 I bet it would be cheaper than a vice or stand held type. Cheers Dave
Hi Dave . Yeah I’d love to make some sets and sell them. The jaws are the downside as there £100. But I think £175 that way I’d make £50 for my time in making it. 👍
@@Metal_shaper_tomI want it but how if shrinking and starching can have an idea I think you can and the ball can changeable too thanks I like it to have one
Nice welds personally I would have used a stainless rod considering the composition of the material of the blades looking as if they are of a high chrome composition. Brilliant results looks good.
Did consider stainless but it is cheap Chinese metal so not that great quality. Once I’d tacked the bits in place and the tacks hadn’t shrunk/cracked that was good enough for me to continue using the mild wire.
@@Metal_shaper_tom nether the less you did produce wonderful product. You should however reinforce the area where you have the bolt. That would be better to have a longer thread and the reinforcement to prevent bending while in use.
I hate them too! Bloody Annoying aren’t they! But if you already have a foot operated shrinker like I mentioned in the video then it is only £13 . Did you skip that bit most people did 😂
Hi Chris the Austin got a bit delayed unfortunately. I had to finish a job I was working on that took a bit longer than expected. I’ve just started the Austin this weekend so hopefully I’ll have something soon to share with everyone 🤞
Another great build. How much time would that have saved on the tricky jib that inspired it? Are you reaching for it a proprtion of the time instead if using the floor standing one or does that still have advantages?
Would of saved me 30 minutes i reckon. I’ll still use the folios one for my everyday work but this is a great alternative for fine adjustments when fitting new panel ect.
Completely agree trev. When Matt at stakesy’s listed them on the website I knew I had to buy a set! I’ll send you a picture when I’ve set them up in the mezt so you can see what there like 👍
Well I know my maths is terrible but the whole point of the video was to show how to turn that £13 tool into a metal shrinker. If you already have the dies like I do on my shrinker as in the video it won’t cost you anymore. If you don’t then you can by them ones to make it. Thanks for watching 👍
@@dannyzuko1843 tough question to answer. The oval on the mezt are really rough but work really well. Downside to this is it really marks up your panel( also great on steel. The round one are much nicer on aluminium and leave less marks but I haven’t used them much on steel. I think either way your be happy . Sorry it’s not a definite answer but I need to test the round ones more
Come on Steve that’s like saying let’s wheel up this panel it’s really easy all you need is this 10k English wheel to start . Like I’ve said in other comments. It’s about turning a £13 pound tool that would cost normally £500 plus . You can use your existing shrinking dies or you can buy these ones for £99 from stakesy’s. The price of the welder is irrelevant as I’ve just brought one for £200 that would do what I just done in this video. Thanks for the comment though 👍
Hello Tony. It’s all about modifying a a £13 tool . If you have a foot operated shrink like the one in the video then great otherwise yeah you’re have to cough up and buy a set.
Why would I do that when I already have a foot operated shrinker as seen in the video. I think you’re missing the point of this as the is designed to be used on the job not in a fixed place
Seems like the price of the cutters and the price of the shrinking dies come to a bit more than "thaeen quid". Or , were you schooled in that "new math"?
Definitely the new math thing. So as you would know from watching it I’d already purchased the new replacement set a few week before as I’d already been using them then I decided to make the video. Then at the end of the video I state if you have a foot operated shrinker then you can use the dies from there to make it. The whole point of the video is to show using a cheap set of bolt cutters you can make a shrinking tool. I’m Assuming you do metal work then you would know that shrinking dies aren’t cheap? Thanks for watching anyway 👍
Clever! Wanted a hand held shrinker stretcher for ages. Well done for working out a simple way of making it. 👍👍

My initial concern was that the jaws do not remain parallel and get worse with thicker material. Nice job though.
It’s not to bad actually. I completely understand the concern but I don’t think I’d use it on anything thicker than 1.5mm Ali 👍

Possibly. There’s always room for improvement on the next one 👍
