    I’m 15 years old and i just found out that I have spina bifida myelomeningocele (the most severe part) I have a scar on my back and I was always told that they removed something and I’ve never given it much thought, I also have absolutely no sensation on my right foot, but I can still move it, I was told that it was this way because they touched a nerve in surgery and I lost sensation, my parents told me these lies because they didn’t want me to feel like i had limits or like i was disabled in some way, I have always performed badly in P.E, and people always tell me that i run funny, I just found out because i was having back pains and I started to limp a little, but im truly grateful for my parents because really if I had known I would have used this as an excuse to not do P.E, to stop running because I ran weird, anyway this video really helped me understand this condition but now im afraid, the doctor told me about how surprised he was that I can run, walk and do stuff, since I had the most severe type of spina bifida, and that Im really lucky and stuff but now there is so much that i dont know like will i lose the ability to walk as i get older??? Will my kidneys fail??? I’m so afraid now and i wish this limp never have appeared so I wouldn’t have known that i had this

      Hopefully it will ease your mind to know that I am 41 and still walking! Painfully, of course, but mind over matter... I was made fun of as a child for limping, and sometimes people actually thought I did it on purpose to look tough! I have a large back scar, and had several club feet surgeries. It took me years to accept my differences because kids told me I was ugly and different. Don't let them bring you down, ever! You are strong and amazing. Take care of any urinary infections quickly, but try to avoid them at all. I had the worst ones during pregnancy, but I survived, and my baby, who is now 8 years old, came out normal and healthy! Your baby's will have a higher risk than normal of having Spina Bifida, but you can learn precautions if you decide later to have children one day. I wish you the best, and try not to worry much about it. We can live long happy lives; proof right here!

    This is good very basic info, but as a 41 year old with SB, I must add that their are many variations in between these models. I was technically diagnosed with 'occulta' as a baby, but I have many of the lifelong neurological problems that are considered part of the more severe forms. I was also born with club feet, and had one spine surgery at age 4 plus several feet surgeries. Some of my neurological problems come from a tethered spinal cord, which is also a common issue in SB patients. A MRI of my spine looks nothing like a normal spine. I have a lipoma that many of my nerves go into at the base of my spine, slightly to the side of where a spinal cord should be, yet mine was "hidden" under the skin. I do have the typical indicators on the outside, but my diagnosis was the in the late 70's/early 80's and they know much more about it now than they did back then. Now adults with SB have trouble finding doctors who know as much about it as the patients. We tend to know more, because, sadly, it is treated as a childhood disease, not as a lifelong birth defect, even though it truly is. Thanks for teaching people about it... more awareness is needed for sure!

    • @EternalGalaxies
      @EternalGalaxies 3 роки тому +2

      Thank you very much for your post. I was diagnosed with SBO but like you, am experiencing many more neurological complications. May I ask how your hidden lipoma was found under the skin? Was it during surgery? Your description of a spot next to your lower spine sounds very similar to my own physical sensations too.

    Spina Bifida cystica occurs when there is an actual protrusion of the spinal cord and meninges through a defect in the vertbral arch. Spina bifida cystica can take two forms. Meningocele and myelomeningocele. Spina bifida occulta is the mildest form of spina bifida and occurs when there is a gap in one or more of the vertebral arches, but the spinal cord and meninges remain within the vertebral canal. Approx. 10 percent of the general population has this variation in development. bladder and/or motor problems

    Great video. I wonder if the affected section of spinal cord (depicted at 0:46--> as the donut-resembling ring with a triangular piece missing) will remain that way or rather develop to a normal one with a delay (so that only the vertebral arch would defect persist). Because wouldn't some important, dorsal neural cell nuclei and tracts otherwise be missing from that level completely? Or is the neural tube enclosure defect tiny enough to not cause any noticeable changes e.g. in the function of sensory and motor tracts of the spinal cord?

    Hello, just wanted to ask, do you guys agree with Folic Acid fortification (adding synthetic Folic Acid to food), foods like rice or bread ?? Or do you prefer the natural Folate??????? I heard it decreases risk of Neural Tube Defects like Spina Bifida. Studies from 2015 says that Folic Acid fortification is 95% successful in terms of decreasing risk of Spina Bifida within 3 years but a synthetic is different from an organic.. so...... Just wanted to ask do ya'll agree with Folic Acid fortification?

    • @karmelamariesamoro5880
      @karmelamariesamoro5880 6 років тому

      The amount of folic acid that’s recommended, especially if your expecting to conceive, is actually a lot around 400 micrograms per day and most of the time folate from natural sources is not enough to meet the daily requirements.... and for folic acid to really work and prevent neural tube defects like this, the folic acid regimen should have been started 3 or so months before pregnancy... so yes, in my opinion food fortification is a good thing so that we could Increase the folic acid levels of the general population even before they become pregnant...

    • @lululovesyou7618

      Matthew Ferrie It can be, yes. People with myelo. can have paralysis, neurogenic bladder and bowel and many secondary issues (like kidney issues and dysautonomia)that come from these things as can those who have a tsci. People with myelo often have Chiari Malformation, hydrocephalus, hip displasia, agenesis of the corpus collosum and other issues that I do not believe are factors in tsci(although hydrocephalus can occur post injury I believe, in some) As with a spinal cord injury paralysis and muscle weakness, numbness of skin etc varies for those with myelo and two people who have it rarely have exactly the same issues/symptoms- as is the case with tsci. I'm not a medical professional though- so this is just my personal experience.

      In a traumatic SCI it is usual that the spinal cord has a distinct like where it is severed. In Spina Bifida there is not such a distinct line as some nerves can be damaged whereas a nerve next to it may not be. I have some sensation in my right calf but not the rest of my legs. In other places it's patchy, 'vague' sensation.

    I have myelomeningocele with hydrocephalus and I had meningitis that was treated quickly. I have struggled academically through middle school, high school, and I failed college both years I went. I DON’T HAVE ANY FRIENDS. I WORK FOR MY DAD’S BUSINESS BUT I CAN’T CONCENTRATE AT WORK. ALL I FUCKING WANT TO KNOW IS IF MYELOMENINGOCELE CAUSED THIS AND I’M NOT GETTING A FUCKING ANSWER FROM ANYONE!!!
