RIP Richard Erdman. I remember reading about how when he was cast, both Dan Harmon and the directors were really intimidated by him, because he had been in showbusiness longer than any of them, or anyone working on the show, had been alive. Then they actually started working with him, and he turned out to be a consummate professional, sweet, funny old man. We managed to get our six seasons, but if there's ever a movie, his absence will be felt.
I like the one where Jeff tells Leonard that the girls are playing ping-pong with him ironically and Leonard gives a defeated look as if to say: "I know"
@@directionpresent teenage girls are playing ping-ping with Leonard which gives him an ego boost because they're young and probably pretty, but if they're only playing with him ironically it means they're not doing it because they genuinely enjoy spending time with Leonard, but because it's the opposite of the expected behavior for a teenage girl -- you expect teenage girls to want to hangout with cute boys or with their other girl friends. Hanging out with an old man isn't cool or exciting, but the idea of doing the opposite of what's expected is what makes it cool/exciting. Doing things 'ironically' was definitely more pervasive in American culture when this episode came out and gladly it's not as prevalent these days because it's ugly way to treat people. You could also make an argument that Jeff's insult to Leonard is more of a reflection of Jeff's cynicism and insecurity -- being that Jeff is too cynical to think that teenage girls would want to hangout with someone old like Leonard -- someone who's not handsome like him.
Andy Bobrow, one of the writers of community, posted some years ago a page full of unused Shut up Leonard jokes. Here's a few of them. "Shut Up, Leonard. If you're going to lip-sync, at least bother to learn the song" "Shut Up, Leonard. Your recipe of mojitos is too sugary, and I want my 15 minutes back." "Shut Up, Leonard. Your movie reviews are pointless, we all know Gone With the Wind was good." "Shut Up, Leonard. You can't just imitate something and call it a parody." "Shut Up, Leonard. No one needs a tutorial on how to make hot chocolate." "Shut Up, Leonard. Your food reviews are pointless. If the frozen pizza is burnt ,it's because you burnt it."
2:09 “Thank you Leonard for your compliment and for your service to this country.” I don’t think Jeff knows that Leonard was part of the NORTH KOREAN army during the Korean War 😂😂
It's not "shut up Leonard," but you should include the one in episode 5 where Jeff says "oh c'mon Leonard, if you're gonna argue with me, put on a bathing suit."
I love how they have many Leonard's facts to mock him about, and they keep them for talking back when Leonard mocks them. Or they actively go after new things to mock him after each situation. Who Knows.
I would have loved it if they developed Leonard's character after the setup they had for him in "messaic myths and ancient people". He could have had a nice father-son relationship with Jeff the same way Pierce had with Troy
How jokes evolve. 1. Tell the joke, punchline can almost be thrown away. "Nobody knows what you're talking about!" 2. Escalate the joke, show effect on subject of the joke. "Touche" 3. Evolve the joke. Joke's pattern is established and shock value is lost. Subject of the joke expects it, has new way to react. "Pfft" The joke can now take almost any form while being clearly recognizable. One joke is now a kind of joke all its own, or to call it, a meme.
The best part is, he didn't get in shape for the role, the dude is always ripped. The costume designers had to intentionally put him in ill-fitting clothes to hide it. Also, my favorite Dean Pelton fact: the actor who plays him, Jim Rash, is an Academy Award winning screenwriter.
"Shut up, Leonard" is better than "Shut up Meg" because it is made in equal footing, and also, because Leonard lets it slide, and knows how to punch back
I dont know why, but i find it so abroriously funny watching a man in his 70's walk around a school with a backpack for his schoolwork on his back, thats just so funny to me 😂😂😂
I don't know why, but the funniest Leonard moment for me is when Jeff says he will give a wedding speech and Leonard points out that it's the rehersal 😂 (it cracks me up lol)
One of the best Leonard quotes: "I want to break into the tv game. I don't want to wake up in 30 years and wonder "what if?""
😮 *Leonard is The Watcher!!!!* #WhatIf...? 😂
"Leonard Rodriguez, Up-And-Comer" 🤣
it’s a multi-layered joke too. this show is so good
In 30 years, he won't be waking up at all.
@@Gible1001 😭😭😭
I love how everyone at the school apparantly have intricate knowledge of Leonard's personal life enough to insult him directly

Still love that scene

Yeah, why'd they cut off that part?
You beat me to it lol
Exactly! I was waiting for that response. It's my favorite!

Honestly I can see why they were intimidated, with how Chevy was acting they were probably worried about having to work with another elderly actor
Just got the movie!!!! Hopefully they will have a Leonard hologram!
He's the Anti Chevy Chase
I hope they give him some sort of 'farewell' in the movie
@@Lehkazza plaque that commemorates the man who’s been at Greendale since the 70’s would be pretty nice
If anything, this shows how resilient Leonard is. The fact that he only retaliates with a raspberry or another comment says it all. 😁
Well, he HAS been in a few wars......
@@brunoprimas1483 and the most famous ones are the paintball war & pillows v. blankets kerfuffle.
@@shameekgrimes1921 Those were the most terrifying, according to Leonard!

Sadly missing
That's my favorite one
Another one is too
Oh that's my absolute favorite!
I think it got replaced by the thank you Leonard from the Jeff's expanding ego episode
Legit my favorite one
I love how everyone at Greendale seems to have a witty comeback at the ready. Not a single second of hesitation.
Well except for Frankie :/
@@ali-g theyre all farts from a lesser god
for leonard they mostly just blurt our embarassing details about his sad old life
There's probably a course for it at Greendale
It's because of the whole small-town vibe at very small community colleges.

Lenard, for your role and the best running joke ever

2:09 “Thank you Leonard for your compliment and for your service to this country.” I don’t think Jeff knows that Leonard was part of the NORTH KOREAN army during the Korean War 😂😂
Either he was a spy, or his "service" was being such a bad soldier that he undercut the North Korean war effort.
His ego definitely doesn't acknowledge that.
the Dean's Jeffrey transformation (and vice versa as well) is one of my favourite things from the show.
Yes indeed. That Freaky Friday episode was the only bright spot during the Gas Leak Year.

"Shut up, Leonard! I once mistook six people for you at a pharmacy!"
The most underrated line in this video.
My favorite one is "Shut up Leonard, I heard about your prescription socks."

Jeff: There are no white women here, Leonard!!!
