Ludwig van Beethoven. Symphony No.9 in D minor, Op.125
Irmgard Seefried, soprano
Rosette Anday, alto
Anton Dermota, tenor
Paul Schöffler, bass
Wiener Singakademie
Wiener Philharmoniker - Wilhelm Furtwängler, conductor.
Recorded live at the Musikverein, Vienna, May 31 1953
Furtwangler records Beethoven : I never saw so much coherence or adequation between a message and a messenger !
There is Furtwangler and then the rest. There is Beethoven and then the rest.
May I add that, on the piano, there is Gilels and everyone else.
As to Furtwangler I totally agree..
@@pietstamitz1 It's not that I don't like other composers. My #2 is Handel followed by Mozart. But Beethoven's music is primal. No other music grabs me like his. When my mother was dying of cancer in 1986-7, I listened to lots of Beethoven, his 8th symphony mostly. I also listed to Gilels and his daughter playing Mozart's double piano concerto. This music kept me going and helped me get through the tough times that lasted at least a year.
Only the people who suffered a lot know what is real Beethoven and Furtwangler.@@Bogart1899
My dear departed dad would love this. He spoke often of furtwangler and loved Ludwig van.
The best symphony of all time!
in all four movements, Furtwangler conveys a cosmic expanse which Beethoven creates with an economy, broad control and vigor of conception which no other composer could hope to equal.
Or at the least has equaled.
The finale presto makes me think of it profoundly
listening to this performance I feel like owning two more ears. Absolutely great
JA!
Our beloved L van B. How can someone with so much aggravation produce so much love in his music? I thank God for this man's faithfulness as he has touched so many millions and will continue to do so. A truly remarkable man.
The sound is fabulous for a recording of this age..Furtwangler's Beethoven is an antidote for the prevalent HIP performances.
HIP approach doesn't work with this Himalaya of symphonies at all.
How he shaped the Adagio. Great.
Bravooo!! Musicoterapia!
The combination of great composers and great songs really makes me happy
This is not a song , but a symphony! Terrible people use song nowadays for everything!
Movement One: 0:00 - 18:25
Movement Two: 18:45 - 30:55
Movement Three: 31:15 - 50:47
Movement Four: 50:49 - 1:16:47
*DANKE!!*
Furtwangler and Beethoven is just great, the best I've ever listened
The Suffering of the poor- The Storm- The Revolution- The internal conflict-Fear-Cry and Joy-THE HOPE- THE FIGHT AND THE STRUGGLE. ALL EXPRESSED IN THE ULTIMATE REVOLUTIONARY MUSIC OF BEETHOVEN.
holy shit, the first tutti I am already blown away....
Usually when you hear a Furtwangler performance, the experience is marred somewhat by coughs from the audience or the poorer sound quality of older technology. Not here - this one is AWESOME, the perfect way to expose Furtwangler to those incapable of focusing on the music over the other distractions. I love the way Furtwangler ends the piece--he leads the instruments in a tempo you wouldn't have believed was possible had you not heard them pull it off! Incredible performance!
Fabulously remastered digitally by Resoundworks! Bravo!
it's like hearing it for the first time, OMG
Hurricane ending is Furtwangler signature, none other plays it so fast.
Vous devriez lire "The Baton and the Jackboot" et "The Devil's Musicmaster', 2 biographies de Furtwangler.
The tutti crescendo in the last movement can shake my internal organs. IT'S SO GOOD! So majestic, such a pure expression of what humanity can create, not destroy!
What a superb remastering !! doesnt sound like record from half-a-century ago at all!!
O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!
Sondern laßt uns angenehmere
anstimmen und freudenvollere.
Freude! Freude!
Baixo. Quarteto e coro
Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
Eines Freundes Freund zu sein;
Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
Mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!
Freude trinken alle Wesen
An den Brüsten der Natur;
Alle Guten, alle Bösen
Folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
Und der Cherub steht vor Gott.
Tenor e coro
Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
Durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan,
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen.
Coro
Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such' ihn über'm Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muß er wohnen.
This is absurdly great. Nothing I've ever heard even remotely compares. Genius Furtwängler!!!
The above comment: gold.
you've gotta listen, not see.
Nothing?
Nothing? CELIBIDACHE
Supernatural, and no doubt of that.
Exceptional good quality recording of Beethoven 9 th by Furtwaengler
Great engineering Thanks
I feel like digging up my old 78
Furtwangler the best!
The best. Pure Beethoven.
YES ! JA! OUI! SI!
He totally understood being German the great masters music, lived it as a child onwards. He has contributed more in my mind to express the real Beethoven's thoughts and put into brilliance.
yes, he certainly understood what it was to be a german
Mostrei a meus filhos: ignoram.
What a f****up language is this?
Very strange opening Allegro: the tempo appears rather slow, yet the overall impression is feverish. Beautiful.
Holy. This is like listening to Glenn Gould for the first time
Perfect 👍
I've heard many recordings of this Symphony (they all kind of sound the same...and not very creative in my opinion...). This guy really infuses his own genius into this piece which gives it a new vitality and 'freshness' that I've been looking for. It really feels like the piece is living as it should be! Bravo!
Beethoven was the Master of the Woodwinds !
what a wonderful old regendary performance as if it is Today's concert sound.
Thanks for uploading.
E Furtwangler interpretou-a, assim.
Out standing.
Great sound and great photo of Furtwängler.
ResoundWorks: Well done! You just managed to have resurrected Furtwängler into the 21st century.
Bravo!
Greatest beethovens conductor ever.
Celibidache
Fabulous, so human.
inhuman ending.
Divine.
Meravigliosa esecuzione.
Outstanding performance!!
Having heard all his Ninth recordings, I can say Furtwangler was anything if not consistent in his tempi, always ending with an insane animalistic final presto/prestissimo!
1:15:49 this tempo is really crazy ,,,,,,,,,,, indeed stunning tempo
As it is in heaven.
Amazing restoration! Thank you for your great job.
Wonderful orchestration, thank you very much.
Wonderful ‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼‼
wahrscheinlich die musikalisch beste wiedergabe dieses werkes!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹👍👍
Incroyable ! thank's for your superb job we rediscover this fantastic interprétation ,un grand merci from Paris

Flawless!
Brilliant sounds !
Thank you. Precious up load !!!

wow, really great work! this sounds way more vivid than the dead DG CD
si torna sempre a beethoven
Amazing quality. I congratulate you on a wonderful upload.
Good Job !! ReSoundWorks, much appreciate for your works !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Simplesmente lindo!!!
17:14 ... oh my God ..... the clarinets of the Vienna ......... oh God ....
Good job!
This must count as one of the first true stereo recordings. I can't find much that predates this other than experimental recordings. CBS didn't start issuing stereo until 1958.
The soprano ,Irmgard Seefried is the very best singer of her time .I have never heard her before in Beethoven’ 9’th symphony
She was one of the best sopranos of all time!!
grazie
Without this video, I would of had no chance of finishing mine Britannic
Just a note to state that all the nit-picking comments about the coda being too fast, the rest of the work too slow, Furtwängler distorting Beethoven's intentions, et al, are really beside the point. There is no human being alive at this moment who is even worthy to breathe the same air as that of the ineffable genius Wilhelm Furtwängler, much less to sit in the comfort of their mother's basement and make pernickety, Beckmesser-ish remarks about the perceived errors of this reading of the Ninth Symphony. All we have the right to do, in our emotionally shriveled, spiritually withered era, is to thank God for the gift of this transcendent rendition, and listen in awe and silence.
Correct! Correct!!! A million times correct!!!!
Correct! Correct!! A million times correct!!!!
@@peterasp1968 Thank you. I must say, I am appalled at the smug, self-aggrandising attitudes of listeners who feel themselves qualified to sit in judgment over a great man like Furtwängler. They should be on their knees, weeping tears of joy, in gratitude that we live in an age whose technological advances allow us to experience such transcendent efforts as this rendition of the Ninth symphony. Honi soit qui mal y pense. Thank you once again for your comment.
Oh, I like you :D
We can be friends!
…nay - brothers!
Paul Barnwell ---thank you for all +1, from you !
1:04:20 Ode to Joy
I absolutely love this remastering! Was listening on my headphones while on a walk and all my neighbors probably think I am insane sine I could not stop fidgeting around, whistling, and fake conducting (I am sure I looked like a mad man). Is this available to purchase! I really need a FLAC or some other lossless version of this; need is not an exaggeration! Please, please, please let me get what I want!
Totally agree! The Furtwängler version is absolutely amazing! I love Karajan.. But 1:15:23 it's the reason why Furtwängler is incomparable.. Karajan made some modifications at the symphony, and i mean, i love his job.. But Furtwängler with his attention to details and variations on tempo it's out this world
To much words ...is the best!
Siiii eso también me ha pasado!!
El verdadero LUDWIG !!! Is here!
All classical music fans's treasure👏👏👏
San, I totally agree with you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cleaning of soul !!
I lost my virginity to this performance when I was 18 years old.
I say this following Casanova,
and I do not mean this teasingly;
Casanova says a man loses his virginity
the first time his nose bleeds.
I had a mindblowing nosebleed
when Furt first penetrated my inner ear cavities.
Thank you for trimming his tissue!
ok
Excellent! Do his 1942 performance of the 9th.
Why? That's Nazi-era stuff.
jmccracken1963 Yes, but the performance is his best I think.
With all respect you talk like a moron here.
F. did not cooperate with the Nazis, he told them to go to hell a number of times and protected
the Jews in his orchestras. he enjoyed getting away to Sweden. Eventually he had to
go to Switzerland because the nazis were fed up with him (after the attempt on Hitler's life it was dangerous to annoy them). Some of the the concerts he did perform 'in the Nazi era' are all time highs precisely because of the time: they privided both performers and audience a way to escape for a moment. (f.ex the Bruckner performances)
jmccracken1963 ignorant!
@@78rupp both are unsurpassible great, but the intentions and above all the conditions were very different...
