    Nice job. I converted one side of a bench grinder to a sanding disc. The boys in the maintenance shop at work made me a teflon disc. That was back in 1998 and it's still working a treat today.

    Absolutely ingenious!. I was looking online to find a wheel to attach to a motor to make one of those and could not find one available at a decent price. Then I seen your video. Everything I need is right in my shop already.
    Thank you so very very much for making this video!!!!!

    A nice simple low cost build that any diy person could manage, even with limited tools if they don’t have a well equipped shop.
    I’m interested in why you chose to use contact adhesive sanding discs rather than Velcro [hook & loop]. Removing glued discs is a pain in the ass even when using a hot air gun, plus over time the adhesive builds up on the backer disc which is even more of a pain to scrape off. Whereas Velcro is as simple as pressing onto the backer disc and pulling off when it’s worn out, with no remnants of glue to deal with, it’s worse than chewing gum to remove. However for me, the biggest benefit to using Velcro discs is that I can easily remove a disc and change for a different grade of grit in less than a second without ruining the disc. Many projects require different grit sizes until the required finish is achieved.
    It’s no big deal using contact adhesive discs if you don’t mind the limitation’s, however having fitted Velcro to my backer & purchasing Velcro sanding discs, I’d never go back to stick on...ever.

    a month before watching this video, i built a 12" sander almost identical to this one. below the table i added a 4" dust collector shroud. used a 1 hp motor for power. my big screw-up was the 1.5 " pulley. a larger one as shown will work much better to control vibration. cast iron are the best. searched ebay for a motor flange. everyone came up metric, all my motors are s.a.e. what can i say ?

    Great video. Is it hard to remove the sanding disk from the MDF backing plate? I am building one of these but am wondering if I should cover the MDF disk with formica or plastic.

    • @manit77
      @manit77 2 роки тому +1

      what about a velcro backing?

    • @davekrueger
      @davekrueger 2 роки тому

      @@manit77 Thanks for the reply. I considered that, but rejected it because I thought it would be better to have a rigid surface behind the sand paper, mostly because that's what I've always seen on benchtop disk sanders, but now I'm having second thoughts. Velcro would be hard to beat in terms of convenience. I ended up covering my MDF disk with plastic laminate and then using adhesive backed sanding disks. The laminate is attached to the MDF with 3M 90 spray adhesive which should be considerably stronger than the adhesive backing on the disks. Nonetheless, I think I would be inclined to use velcro if I had it to do over again.

    Great work! Would this kind of setup work to grind metal? I’m too broke for a belt sander but I have a bench grinder that I could convert into a disk sander like this

    Wondering what you are going to do when the Sanding Disc wears out ? Why not put on a Velcro "Hook-and-Loop" style backing on the board, then attach a sand disc to that ?

    Is the Pinkish colored board you are using for the disk a type of OSB/ particle board? I do wish there was a list of materials you used to create this disk sander.

    • @Kalaakaar-in

      The pink board is actually Waterproof MDF which is used for the interiors. The exterior used MDF is usually in brown colour.

    • @Kalaakaar-in
      @Kalaakaar-in  7 років тому

      I thought of that. But then looked at commercial sanders. In that too the plate had to be removed. Also changing the disc wont be often. But that time will tell.

      mediamilan bolt the table with nuts and bolts so it is easily removed when you need to replace the paper. You can use star bolts used in jigs rather than regular nuts.
