- The risk of a dangerous virus spread by mosquitoes has four towns in Massachusetts urging residents to stay indoors after dark until at least October. According to a local report, the town says it doesn't have the funds to spray away the potentially deadly pests. Tiffany Chan has details.

What is worst is that that black & white legged mosquito, Aedes, is the most aggressive and persistent of all and is active day and night, as opposed to other mosquitoes that only feed at sundown.
It's also an invasive species and not native to the Americas. It was brought here in used tire water.

I think Oxford should get bathouses. Bats eat thousands of mosquitoes per night. Bats could probably take care of this problem.

Actually, adult mosquitoes are most active after 5 pm. The recently hatched mosquitoes can fly after 12 hours, so some are out during day time depending on when they hatched. So, yes you have more of a chance to get bitten after 5pm.
Where do you live that you don't know mosquitoes generally feed in the evening?

Fans. I live in Louisiana we have 63 types of mosquitoes. The little striped ones are a pain. Mosquitos need shade and water. Don't poison your kids. It doesn't work. Use fans. They make large outdoor fans. Also eliminate shade and standing water. Change animals water twice a day. Don't leave it outside if you can.
Common sense measures, but it seems the coof has melted politicians brains.
I read somewhere that contrary to popular belief, mosquitos are more attracted to wearing dark colors as opposed to lighter ones. I'd have to research it again. Maybe someone has more info on this.

Douglas, Oxford, Sutton and Webster - are at “critical risk” after a man from Oxford caught the virus. 6pm until 30 Sept. then 5pm after that until hard frost. Hope this helps!
A horse in Plymouth also caught eastern equine encephalitis so the town is closing public outdoor recreation facilities for now.
These same misquotes are out all day in Johnston Rhode Island all summer. It’s far past those few towns.

I was a Marine stationed in Okinawa early 1990s and we had to be vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis. Mosquitoes bit birds and got the virus then the mosquito bit hogs on the farms and we were mandated to get the vaccine and boosters. Active duty and dependents. Sounds like the same type of thing.

In the area I live there are lots of bats, frogs, dragon flys and no mosquitos. The trade off is when you are outside after about 6:30 pm there is always 2 to 5 bats flying over you.

Bat's, frogs and birds are becoming pretty scarce in most areas of the US. I have worked outdoors, skied, hiked, climed, camped, mountain biked and paddled just about everywhere all my life and the decline of our little bug eating critters saddens me. I'm still as active as ever at 83 so I've been observing this for a long time.
Habitats are being destroyed and chemicals are killing the insects.
But we have billions of dollars for Ukraine and Israel. 👏👏

Interesting, because I remember in the late 90’s, the USAF was spraying for mosquitos in the Carolina’s, and also got deployed to Africa to help them when they had a massive malaria problem going on….
They spray for mosquitoes constantly out on the Cape, so I'd imagine it's common elsewhere around Mass.

Buy some off and don't go outside without it on. I even carry a travel one in my purse as the south has always been over run with mosquitos.
Also, cover or remove standing water in your home and keep it clean to remove breeding spots inside the home. It's part of the dengue advisory in the Philippines.
I've been all over the Country, a lot in the south, but the worst mosquitoes I ever ran into were in the forests of Washington State!
@@BETTERWORLDSGT Well I have lived in the south, various parts of it all my life, I know how bad they are hear in the summer, especially around water, and or damp places, in shady places etc. Never been to Washington State however I suspect they can be bad anywhere that borders the ocean and where it rains a lot.

It’s only a recommendation. If you disagree then take your chances. When my family visits the mosquito haven that I call home the kids have to wear long sleeves and pants and slather insect repellent on exposed areas. One child got a lot of bites that were brutal.

In the Washington DC area we have a mosquito, the Aedes albopictus, commonly called the Asian Tiger mosquito.
It is out primarily during the day and still at night.

Mosquitoes function best at 80 degrees F, become lethargic at 60 degrees F, and cannot function below 50 degrees F.

The amount of mosquito bites my kids and I have gotten this year is no joke. Never seen something like it compared to 5 years ago. And this is the first year where I’ve seen multiple white and black mosquitos every time I’m outside, where as before it was super rare it seemed like
