Thanks uncle Ben. This is a great video. I watched all of cracking the code series & that changed my life. This video expands on that in a very simple & easy to understand way & helps to forever cement those priceless concepts. It also helps to show ways quick & simple ways I can incorporate it into my own playing. Thanks again.
Yo I think I’m finally starting to “get” pickslanting. I’ve been kinda overwhelmed and feeling like I didn’t get it. The trick with the taking the tiny parts of the lick and knowing you can use those really makes it feel more solid in my head, thanks uncle ben!
Ben Eller aka uncle Ben, giant fan here!! thank you for this cracking the code on downward pic slanting, Especially if the pattern ends in an upstroke.
This is one of those licks that make you put down that Hammett thing you were horsing around with and go OCD trying to learn and play this up to speed until 5 a.m.
This is also the kind of lick that can graduate you out the Hammet level of lead playing into the world of true shred. Kirk hammet is merely entry level shred!
Thx Ben.. As if I'm not hearing enough Xmas music right now. Once you started playing at stepdad speed 2:49, all I heard was "hear those sleigh bells jingle jangle"
Any tips for transitioning from thumb over the top to thumb behind the neck while playing this lick? the first few sequences i can play how i normally would with my thumb over the neck but the later sequences require the spidery hand splayed out sort of technique which requires your thumb to be behind the neck. I'm having trouble transitioning between these playing the lick as it seems unnatural to play with my thumb behind the neck.
T Marti dude basically just take this lick, and play it upward pickslanting but starting on an upstroke; then, all your string changes will happen on downstrokes. Easy!
what helps me is to "chunk" it. Take the tab ben made, circle the notes that occur on the downbeat and concentrate on getting to that note. For example, the first group of 8: (12) 15 14 12 (10) 14 12 10. Heavily accent those notes to kinda drive it home... HTH.
I have a metronome that can beep every 8th, 16th, and 16th triplet note. That way I can set it to beep as often as I want without counting between the beeps. It helps a lot.
Dear biological step-son, would you please teach me "Set to Fail" by Lamb of God. The chord structure of the verse is loaded with harmonies and harmonics, could you bust it down to "Boning Mom" speed and teach both parts? Make us granddaddy’s happy with a new song, we love our biological step granddaddy slow grandpa metal songs too!
You're the uncle I wish I always had. With a Kemper and an amazing repertoire of guitar knowledge I wish I always had.

Awesome shred lesson!
Dude, your 8-bit intro looks professional and always rocks. Nice work!
I love my Uncle Ben!!! :D
Very nice I was looking for something like this to practice my dwps technique.

So true!

this took me a minute but was very worth it
Found his channel and subscribed!
Hey Ben! Would you talk about swipe (it's not sweep) picking in some next video? I think is one of the most interesting topics on troy grady's videos
Nice vid Uncle Ben. I'm Hanky Pooh from CTC forum. I'll share there. ;)
Hey Ben! What the devil is the song that's playing in the background?
I can't even play it at step grandad speed :/
Did I hear Prancer dancing and something about slay bells in the first handful of notes?
Cool excercise. I prefer to just keep descending the Pop tarts lick
The real way to play ride the lightning!
BADASSERY !!
Could you show us what happens in the chorus of Metallica's Battery? When they scream out "Battery" it's just some beat... I have no clue what it is.
TheManwithafan ah! Yeah I deciphered that recently and found some interesting stuff happening! Coming soon!

Good Ben! Can you make a lick on upwards pickslanting going down? So in direction of low E. Thanks for your very instructive videos!

Ben Eller 😂 ok, I ll try
Or use and odd number of notes??
Do you chunk this is in groups of 4, 6 or 8 for high speeds?
sounds so fancy played slowly
When I try to play fast runs like this my timing is terrible. Do you have any tips besides using a metronome and slowly increasing speed?
John Osborne be sure to watch my "your hand synchronization sucks" video!
