As a rod builder nothing is more satisfying to me than to have someone catch a fish on a rod I built. Watched all of your rod building videos and have applied some of your techniques to my rods. Learn more and more after each rod build. Good luck next year.
My first build was a fail but it is so satisfying knowing I know what I did wrong and working on my second now. Guide placement has been my struggle getting all guides in alignment with the spine. Trying to build spinning rods by the way.
I’ve been building for 4 that’s. It took me awhile to get the confidence to actually buy everything and start but after I got it and actually started building it’s very easy and rewarding.
I just got a rod building kit from Mudhole and am excited to start building my own rods, thanks for getting me interested in doing this. I am going to start repairing my eyes first then on to rod building.
Matt, how’s your weather today? 48 and sunny here in Waukesha area. Water temp in 34 and low wind. I’m thinking about busting the kayak out. Thanks for the rod guidance! Also, you’ve convinced me to give rod building a try
Love building my own. I've been doing it for about 5-6 years. I too finally have my boat filled with only my custom rods. I make some money fixing rods. Luckily some of my buddies have old Duckett rods and the guides break all the time!
Love the BPS Micro Light. Hated the guides and hated the weak tip. I changed up the guides and broke a few inches at the tip. It has since taken too many trout. In fact we did over 80 at a park on the Kings the other day. The day before, me and the bro caught over 100 on hard lures and flies alone...that is something that cannot be done. the time I went before that, we limit out in an hour at a public lake at 20 trout for a four-person bag. I love how people downplay my skills. I can teach yall how to catch trout with bass lures and vice versa. A professional racket is different from a recreational racket in table tennis. The difference is in the bounce and twist.
Matt, I finally was able to get my hands on the CRB Core rod building kit with 3 ice rod kits from Mudhole. When I was ordering it, I saw your signature rod kits. I was excited to see them. I can't wait to make my next order!
I suspect a large number of the retail rods on the shelves are not on spline. I have seen pros fighting fish on Live and observed their rods jump the spline while they’re fighting fish. I find the rods I build are more apt to stay loaded on spline during the fight. Keeping the rod loaded and the fish pinned means more fish in the boat. Until I started building I didn’t even know what to look for. Even if someone just builds a few it will make them a better rod buyer in the future, if it’s something they end up not wanting to pursue.
I got the rod building kit earlier this year on sale for a round 150 dollars. And I am about to build my first rod soon. Now I wish I hadn’t spent all my money on bought rods earlier so I could build more!
Thank you for these videos. I never even thought about building a rod until your videos. What has peaked my interest is the reel seat. I’ve tried rods and immediately discard them because the real seat is awful. To be able to have the same reel seat on every rod would be huge. …. That being said, I’ve gone to mud hole and instantly was overwhelmed. With no industry standard for what is a M, MH, or H power or Mod, ModF, or F for action I don’t even know what to look for in a blank. I know what I like in a rod within jewel and ark rods but that was after trying so many brands. …. So I guess my question is how do I know which blank is which or how it would correlate to what I know like ?
🍺Matt is there a limit on how high end the MHX builds can go due to the proprietary make up of the blank itself? Can you build a G Loomis conquest $800, St Croix legend extreme$700, G Loomis NRX+ $660 for 1/2 price or is there a limit that gets reached where you are no longer comparing apples to apples?
I build rods comparable to NRX for $250. North fork x-ray or mhx elite blanks. Exact copy of nrx guide train Fuji titanium torzite/recoil running guides. Best part is you get to chose your reel seat and handle material.
Have built several rods from MHX (made in China) and North Fork Composites (made in USA by Gary Loomis). There is no comparison, and they are priced very similar. @@MattStefanFishing
I’ve wondered if you would custom build a rod( or 2) for me,and I’ve asked questions before how to compare the Mud Hole blanks to a Loomis. I have dozens of rods from a few different brands, but I have more Shimano and Loomis rods than any other brand.I’ve used them for decades and I realize I have bought a few that I wasn’t thrilled with. It takes years to dial yourself into what you need a rod to do and which blank works best…
No questions here, I do alot of things most people don't. Thirty years ago when I was doing serious shooting, I would work up my loads. Now days its my own jigs, spinner baits, rods and other such stuff. Just a control freak I guess!
I’ve been building rods for years. That way I know it’s spined right, guides are straight, and I can use the grips I like. After picking up $200 plus rods in the store with the guides not straight, I felt that was unacceptable and decided to control quality myself.
@@MattStefanFishing sorry for all the questions but I’m brand new at this. I just got my kit in the other day. Are there certain seats or handles that will not work with certain blanks?
Good grief.. every time you put out one of these biased, one sided, evil brainwashing videos on rod building, I find myself closer and closer to trying a rod build. Never wanted to take on the task but I think I'm seeing the light.. or hearing the voice of reason.. idk which one but this project does sound fun AND satisfying.. I'm close lmao😂😂
Maybe it is just me. I hove no idea if I would need a faster or slower tip, or what other change I would need to make my rod more suitable for an application. I would not know that my rod does not work the way it should. Thanks.@@MattStefanFishing

UA-cam is your best friend.
I purchased and built a couple of your rod build kits with with great success.. I would really like to see more kids and recipes for me available.
I’m a big st croix guy but I would 100% buy a coretackle Matt Stefan signature series rod.
Awesome!

I appreciate you getting me into rod building. Gotta figure out this fine tuning thing, and how to decide which to take...

Got me interested for sure

Call mud holes customer service and they can tell you which blanks relate to what
@@MattStefanFishing thanks for answering. I’ll have to do that. Having the same reel seat on my 4 go to rods would be a big benefit for me.
Could you show how you make them, I am excited buddy
Look under his playlists, build to catch series.

In my opinion the MHX elite blanks are comparable to other top end rod blanks

How do you determine what handle and seat works best for the blanks?
just personal preference
@@MattStefanFishing sorry for all the questions but I’m brand new at this. I just got my kit in the other day. Are there certain seats or handles that will not work with certain blanks?
You have to have the correct rod for the lure you are fishing , all rods matter , specific rods for specific baits
Agreed
👍👍👍👍👍

I would say that most of your viewers do not have the skill or knowledge to finetune a rod.

Sounds like a good company, but it is by far the worst tasting jerky on the market.
Completely disagree but to each there own i guess
