Thanks for the video - just two thoughts from a German on some struggles: aspargus can be frozen very easily when fresh - just buy it in season and you can have it all year round (also works for Pfifferlinge...). Second is the coin for the shopping cart: You can always ask to change a bill in the supermarket.
Concerning coins for Grocery carts in Supermarkets: Volksbank or Sparkasse and some other banks may give out chips that you can attach to your keys to use for grocery carts. Maybe you can just ask the bank tellers or other employees at the counter in a friendly way once you will be at the bank the next time.
What a nice touch that you positioned your monitor where the little video would be, so it looks like you're watching the video along with us. I wonder why other reaction videographers don't do it that way. PS: Keep the reactions coming!!!
Stinky cheese with music (i.e. onions) rules.. And never underestimate the great taste of sour fish with creme (i.e. Sahnehering) with hot potatoes. Hmmmmm... yummy..
in the UK we rarely use long life milk ...We prefer fresh refrigerated milk and i think eggs are unrefrigerated everywhere in Europe and not just in Germany
When I first came to Germany from the UK, many years ago, I wondered why everyone used longlife milk. I noticed that they didn't really use much milk. They put evaporated milk in coffee, only drank infusions, never tea, or only very rarely "black tea", and then without milk. Cereal for breakfast wasn't a thing, they only ate bread, rolls, or, on Sundays, cake. So longlife milk was used, if at all, because it kept better. Most families would only get through about a litre a week. Also, it was considerably cheaper than fresh milk. Still is.
Rollmops shouldn't require refrigeration ... if you insist keeping it for many months, maybe! But in that case just admit that you don't like it and get rid of it!
The problem with the shopping carts to my mind is not the danger that they were stolen (except a little number perhaps) but that in bigger cities some people will take the carts with them right before their appartement building so that they avoid to carry havy bags. Some supermarkts equip their carts with a magnetic brake which blocks the wheels if you try to leave their area. At this the magnetic system is buried below ground level.
Milk absorbs bad smells from the fridge very efficiently. Just put a small cup in the fridge or leave the milk carton open over night, when you're about to finish it. It doesn't need much, but it works like magic.
Some stores, when you ask them to break 5 euro for change to use in the cart they give you a plastic chip for the cart instead (often with their logo and color scheme). You often see these chips in a wallet or in a change holder in a car. You even may have nostalgia towards them, mine is from a store chain that doesn't exist anymore, the shopping center it was in was even torn down and replaced with other buildings by now. I live in the countryside of germany and at most stores here, the carts don't need chips but in the nearest city they do.
Pro tip: you can open a German shopping cart with any coin, even one Cent. Takes a certain technique, but I did it successfully many times. Put it in, press down and against the side of the lock, keep up the pressure while slowly closing it. Might take a couple of tries, but it works very well. Alternatively just get a key chain with a shopping cart chip.
That wasn't stinky cheese compared to Limburger and Romadur. In many supermarkets like Kaufland you can buy the chip for your shopping cart for around 50 cents. They give you a small snap hook that you can attach to your key chain. That way you never forget the chip.
If you think the normal Stinkekäse stinks, try Handkäse mit Musik. Translates ti stink cheese with onions in bvegetable oil with vinegar. The chese must rest for minimum 2 days in warm environment. Stinks like hell, tastes verry good
Quark kann man auch herzhaft genießen. Z.B.
I'm all with you! Stinky cheese and pickled fish don't come anywhere near me either. I have to step in for jared asparagus though. We live in a famous asparagus region, the Lüneburger Heide. My mother-in-law is obsessed with asparagus and buys it in 5-kg-packs within the season. What she and her husband can't eat within a week, she preserves in jars. There is a special soup here, called "Hochzeitssuppe", wedding soup, which mostly consits of beef broth, small meat balls, "Eierstich" and jared asparagus. It tastes surprisingly good! And jared asparagus also has to go into every "Hühnerfrikassee". Let me know if you care for the recipes! 😂
I am American and I stay away from the same things as you do like the pickled fish things. It must be something you grow up with to like. I enjoyed this video.😊❤
4:00 the intention of the deposit isn't really so the cars won't get stolen - I mean, if you do want to steal one, they are worth considerably more than 50 cents or a Euro, so that deposit wouldn't really deter you - even if you couldn't avoid it. No, the real intention is to make people return the carts to where they are lined up, as opposed to leaving them right next to their cars when they drive off. That said, at least in my area of Germany, you will find more and more shops where you won't have to put in deposit any more, or where the carts are not locked even though there is no coin or anything else in them. Not sure why exactly that is. Maybe because the number of people paying cashless has been increasing as of late.
After collecting grocery baskets for a month 2 yrs ago at a major Southern California , I saw sense in the coin deposit system to use a shopping carts. We do have Aldi's throughout California , but the major chains Kroger ( Ralph's and Food 4 Less in so Cal) a, Vons , Pavilions, Whole Foods, Stater Bros, etc all don't have this system. Depending on where a person is in the US, alcohol can be sold in supermarkets and chain drug stores/ Pharmacies like CVS , Walgreens , Rite Aid ( the 3 major chains) and or state run ABC stores. ABC stores are common in the South and Midwest , not so much on the coasts. Small mom and pop liquor stores and gas station convenience stores also sell alcohol. The existence of ABC stores ( some of which are Drive thru , especially those that specifically sell frozen adult beverages in Louisiana, particularly throughout Nee Orleans and they're not just open for Mardi Gras but all yr long), does have some ties conservative religious beliefs , especially in the South aka The Bible Belt, but also historically, the temperance moment in the early 20th century hand in hamd with religious beliefs have alot to do with regulations on the sales of alcohol in some states are to this day.
One of my most favorite videos on YT featuring GER, "This is Germany" by the channel named "Dr. Ludwig" is definitely a must react-to (make sure to activate the subtitles as they reveal the locations captured). The music in this video isn't copyrighted, so please feel free to use it, it's part of the choreography! Grab your husband Rob and simply enjoy this ride!!!
I lived in Germany for 10 years and they are definitely ahead of Australia and New Zealand in many ways. In Australia we finally now, over the last few years, have to bring our own shopping bags, we finally have container stations to bring our recycable bottles and get some money for it, Aldi shops you need a coin or token for the trolley. I leave a coin in my car for the aldi shops. I agree, I couldn't eat the rollmops either when I lived there and am not a big processed meat eater either so never got into it there either. I do remember my cousins children in Germany would love to eat at times the shokokusse squashed in a bun. Lecker! Happy we get more and more German foods in Australia now though too as I do like sauerkraut and knoppers.
3:41 We do not pay for the shopping carts, and during the day it is only a matter of protecting the shopping carts from theft to a limited extent. The supermarkets lock the shopping carts overnight. If you want to steal them, you can do it with cheap plastic coins or unlocking tools. But you can see straight away who the shopping carts belong to and if they have been stolen. This may be a problem in the city, but in my rural area it hardly ever happens. The coin deposit system is about ensuring that the carts are not left in the parking lot, but are returned to the collection point. Many people use plastic coins because they cannot be spent, but the shopping carts are usually returned properly anyway. Even at the Famila chain of stores, which does not use locks on the shopping carts, the carts are usually returned properly. Famila benefits from the decades-old educational measure of the other supermarkets.
If you don't have a coin, use a house key with a round head. Then insert the head into the slot provided for the coin. When you turn it off, simply pull the key out again.

Great video again Antoinette!! I'm a dutchie living 5 minutes from the german border so basically I do all my groceries over the border (saves soooo much). So indeed everyrhing in this video is quite normal to me too😊. There's only one thing in Germany that is truly in my top 10 favourite foods and I never seen anyone on youtube mention it: the white cold pasta salad you get at every German barbeque (at least in NRW)!!! Do you know this too?
So pleased you enjoyed the video. How convenient it must be to live so close to the German border. I actually loved the Dutch supermarkets, especially all the delicious, fresh ready-made meals you can get. Yes, it's not a German BBQ without cold pasta salad. Unfortunately, I can't eat it due to gluten intolerance (celiac) but I try to make my own GF version🙂
@@AntoinetteEmily Nooo, really hope you'll get the gf version down! And indeed it's very convenient to live on the border so I can get the best of both worlds. There are so many things that are better in Germany but not everything obviously. Can't waiy for your next video 😊👍
I find the sachets of baking powder most inconvenient. I usually only need half and always have a collection of half-used sachets leaking all over the drawer.
Oh, come on, that’s a not-problem. 🙂 1. A collection? Why not use the other half of it before you open the next sachet? 2. Why not store the opened sachets in a „tupperware“-box? 3. Google other ways to use Backpulver (mainly cleaning). 🙂
You can put the "stinky cheese" on Pizza and bake it which will make it loose it's stinkyness as well as let it loose its strong taste, plus it is low fat as far as I know.
4:10 probably cause the majority in germany still uses coins rather than card, so it's assumed people always have atleast one 50c or 1€ coin with them to use the carts. Also there are those sort of plastic coins some supermarkets give out which you can use instead of a coin. 8:00 Ok, I live in austria, but I've never seen one of these! 10:10 I just wanted to say it's good on pizza, but you also have to like it, lmao.
So, you're enjoying white asparagous? You've been germanized for sure.... 🥰 Gotta give Rollmops another try (I'm only kidding you with the herring, zillions of Germans dislike Rollmops as well )! Glad you`d tried it, though. ❤
you should try " maggi " i think thats pretty much a german thing you can eat it with a boiled egg just dont put too much on it a few drops is enough. but you gonna hate it or love it i can tell 😂
New Zealand doesn't call it something else? For the US, we call it Farmer Cheese. It's still rare to get it, but you can find it. I don't know if Germany does this, but in Switzerland, Coop has a promotional coin that will fit into the slot for the carts. It has a clip on it so you can clip it to your bag. For when I went shopping in Germany (we lived in Basel) my husband 3D printed a coin that will fit in the slot. He punched a hole in the top so I could hang it with the Coop coin. He scanned the coin to his computer and then sent it to the 3D printer. Now we are in the US He 3D printed a coin to fit in the carts at Aldi. Again he scanned a quarter and then sent it to the printer from his computer. He does these things as a tiny Christmas present for friends 😂. The real reason the US washes their eggs is to cut down on the food born illness Salmonella. The USDA claims Salmonella can penetrate the egg and make the consumer sick. This is a huge argument with farmers. One farmer in the US did a study where he washed his 40 eggs and 40 eggs where he didn't wash them. He cracked the unwashed eggs had less Salmonella in it than the washed eggs. You still can get unwashed eggs in the US, but you have to go directly to a farm. Farmers even aren't allowed to sell unwashed eggs at the Farmers Market.
Because Paprika is the standard here for chips. In discounters like Lidl or Aldi, the cheapest store-brand chips are always Paprika, and not Salted, SourCream&Onion etc. Sure, you can get almost anything in Kaufland etc… for a price.
4:36 It is a problem these days that you can ONLY get curry ketchup in the discount stores, but apart from a standard vinegar-soaked tomato ketchup, often no other varieties. I often can't find what I would like to have with fries and bratwurst. You then have to go to better-stocked stores and sometimes spend a little more than just the cheapest price, or wait for special offers, where they have different sorts. The manufacturer HELA has a good selection of varieties, but the standard discounters often only have curry and hot curry on offer.
The limited selection is the most important difference between normal supermarkets and discounters, though. And Curry Ketchup just isn’t an item that’s sold and bought in bulk. Btw, my favourite is the VOLKSWAGEN Curry Ketchup, but it’s hard to find it in shops outside of Wolfsburg. Second place are the ones from Kraft, Heinz or Maggi.
@@Imnottrainedforthis I've never seen VOLKSWAGEN Curry Ketchup in the Hamburg-Lübeck area. I assume that it's a local side-marketing of a ketchup that was made especially for the Volkswagen canteen and was so popular that the staff demanded that it be sold in stores, right?
@@Imnottrainedforthis The discounter principle of limited, cheapest goods is now only the basic program of a discounter. All discounters also use other concepts such as branded goods or weekly changing offers.
@@Gaston413 I don’t know about the staff demanding anything (my BF back then works at VW), but yes, it’s hugely popular and you can only buy it in the Wolfsburg region (in Real or Edeka, not in discounters). OR you order it online. The same applies to their special sausages. Sooo good. 🤤
Stinky cheese: I knew a man who had been banned from having his stinky cheese in the fridge. The cheese moved into a mailbox that hung on the north side of the house 😂
In South Australia, we can return our plastic bottles to a recycling depot and get money for them. We only get 10 cents per bottle. It’s been like this for twenty years 🙁 I thought it should increase to at least 20 cents, because of inflation. Aldi is the only supermarket we need to pay, to use a shopping trolley. We can use a $1 or $2 coin, or we can buy a special token from Aldi for $1. We usually keep this in the console in the car in case we need it. In South Australia, we cannot buy alcohol from a supermarket. Recently I went over the border into Victoria, and I was shocked to see that alcohol was being sold in Aldi 😮 The laws must be different in different states of Australia. I don’t mind rollmops, but I have to eat them with something else such as potatoes or cream to take away that really sour flavour. I couldn’t eat them on their own. Something similar to rollmops was eaten in Norway and Scandinavia too. I sometimes buy some other flavours of rollmops from Ikea. Recently I have bought pickled herring in mustard sauce. I put it in a wrap with avocado, and it was yummy 😋 Strangely enough, my husband, who is Asian, just loves rollmops. It reminds him of some Asian flavours he grew up with. Long life milk is reasonably popular in Australia too, although we mainly have it as a backup. When we buy eggs from the supermarket, they are not in the fridge, but when we get home, we put them in the fridge 🤔
Dear Lady A live without CURRYWURST is not worth living 👍👍😊😊😃😃 Rollmops we germans LOVE Rollmops ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤BLUTWURST BHMMM LECKER mit Zwiebeln Senf und Maggi soo gut 😃😃😃😃
I hate asparagus from jars. If you want asparagus all over the year, I recommend to rather freeze the fresh asparagus. Works quite well. I even saw frozen asparagus selled.
Och, canned asparagus is good enough when you’re on a budget. Of course, fresh or frozen is better, but well. Mind, I do prefer canned asparagus for chicken fricassee.
Meistens haben Kassierer Chips für den Einkaufswagen. Vielleicht kannst du nächstes Mal da nachfragen, bevor du die Kinder einpacken und wieder nach Hause fahren musst. 😊
Yes, the pickled Herring is very German. Frankly,it's gross. I am American. My Grandparents were born in Germany and my Father and Uncles were first generation American. At Christmas my Father would buy either the cream or tomato sauce pickled Herrings to eat as his special holiday treat. No one else in my house would eat them. We were all repulsed. Couldn't stand the smell or appearance. We could even watch him eat it.😆
Next time when you accidently forgot to take some coins with you to the grocery shop, please just ask someone and don't go home unnecessarily!!!! Many people have lots of these plastic coins in their car (I have countless) and wouldn't mind to give you one or even donate ridiculous 50 cents to you. I mean I wouldn't (mind)!!!!! You can ask the cashier from the other side of the desk as well to change some money for you.
Why is it so funny that "only" sparkling water is sold in supermarkets? You have the better quality still water a thousand times cheaper right out of your faucet in all over Germany. There is no need to buy drinking water!

there are plastic coins, that you can attach to your car key, you´ll never have to search again, put an additional one in your purse...TADAAA!!
So, you're enjoying white asparagous? You've been germanized for sure.... 🥰 Gotta give Rollmops another try (I'm only kidding you with the herring, zillions of Germans dislike Rollmops as well )! Glad you`d tried it, though. ❤
Rollmops - so lecker! oder auch Heringstipp
you should try " maggi " i think thats pretty much a german thing you can eat it with a boiled egg just dont put too much on it a few drops is enough. but you gonna hate it or love it i can tell 😂
Miss u sharing grocery hauls
I'm pretty sure Stinkekäse would have been the No1 reason for divorce if my Grandma had ever looked for one...No judge would have denied it😂😘
Have to admit, I developed quite a taste for fleishsalat ❤
Lollll u make him finish the jar of stinky fish
I really don't understand why the paprica flavor of chips is such a thing by the Americans. In fact there is a huge variety of flavors available!
Sooo good. 🤤
@@Gaston413 I know. But I guess there’s a reason they don’t have several kinds of Curry Ketchup on the shelves.
10:45 I *hate* all those plastic wraps, especially around already packaged goods. Plastic is too harmful to the environment.
You HATE plastic wraps? Are there any other random everyday objects you're HATING?
You should take your pills and see your therapist soon!
but with cucumbers for example the plastic packaging makes the product look LESS attractive but is used to lengthen the shelf life
@@michaelparkin6974 fruits and vegetables can be biocoated with alginates or proteins
Very nice to see my habits on your face. 😁
I never had expected that Quark is unknown in so many countries. It is dairy product, belonging to staple food and not very difficult to produce...? 🤔
So good u can eat peanut butter puffs being gluten free
I put it in a wrap with avocado, and it was yummy 😋
Strangely enough, my husband, who is Asian, just loves rollmops. It reminds him of some Asian flavours he grew up with.
Long life milk is reasonably popular in Australia too, although we mainly have it as a backup. When we buy eggs from the supermarket, they are not in the fridge, but when we get home, we put them in the fridge 🤔
Dear Lady
A live without CURRYWURST is not worth living 👍👍😊😊😃😃 Rollmops we germans LOVE Rollmops ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤BLUTWURST BHMMM LECKER mit Zwiebeln Senf und Maggi soo gut 😃😃😃😃
you cant just only use the deposit in that supermarket, you can get your cash back at the cashier if youd like so.
stinky cheese, no!!!, rollmops, maybe half a one, still can,t find the cream donuts, Gruß aus Bad Kissingen.
Pickled Hering is most for a hangover. So get all the minerals back. But as a snack? 😋
Loll luv it
Curry ketchup sounds diff cause spicy
Very good video.
Es gibt in Deutschland schon eine große Auswahl an Chips, man muss nur den richtigen Supermarkt finden
I never ate blood sausage and I’m
German 😂
Like flashsalat
Labskaus mit Rollmops❤
Neat fun egg fact
Yes, the pickled Herring is very German. Frankly,it's gross. I am American. My Grandparents were born in Germany and my Father and Uncles were first generation American. At Christmas my Father would buy either the cream or tomato sauce pickled Herrings to eat as his special holiday treat. No one else in my house would eat them. We were all repulsed. Couldn't stand the smell or appearance. We could even watch him eat it.😆
* could not watch him eat the Herring.
I love Knoppers. German cakes and chocolates are gorgeous.
Haven't heard about your driver's license in a while. How's it going?😘
How come you guys don't know Quark ??? It's so weird.
Why is it so funny that "only" sparkling water is sold in supermarkets? You have the better quality still water a thousand times cheaper right out of your faucet in all over Germany. There is no need to buy drinking water!
Not true. You can ask the cashier. For a coin 😊
Many stores will give you a plastic chip to use for the shopping carts.
10:40: This is so annoying, and I am always wondering who these idiots are that rip apart the packages.
