I think there are lots of signs Ruby will come back as a stronger version of herself, probably after having spoken with her mom. 1. As soon as Yang asks what if she isn't Ruby anymore, we see the Herbalist come back as an evolved version of himself. 2. If Ruby actually changed to a different person with a new identity and everything, it would invalidate her journey, her pain, and her growth. 3. When the Blacksmith asks what if Ruby could be anyone, leaving Ruby Rose behind, her following behavior is not indicative of wanting to do that. She says she feels like her burden is heavy, and right now she's not cutting it, but becoming an entirely new person would only be a band-aid to that problem. She won't actually learn how to move on from this pain if she becomes someone new. She needs herself to grow. That's why she's hesitant to pick up any of the other weapons, until she sees Summer's. 4. She mentions wanting to have been the hero like those in the stories her mom used to read, and the Cat/Neo makes the observation that deep down Ruby still wants that. 5. "What are you?" was a thematic question in this episode, but it also alludes to the first episode of this season, when Little asked Ruby what she was. She had several answers, most of which confused Little, and Ruby herself began to question what she was as well. Changing into a new person once again nullifies the significance of that question. 6. We've been teased with Ruby remembering her mom a lot this season, but the payoff hasn't happened yet. That leaves two possibilities. One, she becomes her mom (unlikely, impossible, weird, and pointless), or two, she meets her mom (in some form) who helps her understand that she's exactly who she needs to be (or something like that), pointing again to a stronger version of herself. 7. They've created this decidedly real possiblity of Ruby becoming someone else, but if she comes back as herself, she will have chosen specifically to do that, which will make her stronger. It means more if she chooses this herself than it would otherwise, and it provides the avenue she needs for proper character growth. Trials produce endurance. 8. If they did have her become someone else entirely, now not only does the show have to deal with Salem and that side of its complex issues, now the show needs to have the rest of the cast accept it, move on, and get the audience to magically have a history and attachment to this new character in the fight against Salem. It seems clear to me that's not something this show can afford to do, and I think it's self aware enough to know that. It may not know other things about itself, but I think that's one that's a safe bet to rule out. Or maybe I'm wrong and I'll just give up after V9, along with many of the rest of us still sticking around.

And you know what? They're all self-entitled dicks. The writing team knows what we want. They'll have Ruby the same as she was before, but maybe have her appearance somewhat changed to show that she has grown up a little.
can we just think about the fact that it effectively took Ruby committing suicide (from the perspective of the characters) for them all to go "oh yeah, maybe we have been a bit dickish and asking too much from a *literal child* " like, I love this show, but the fact that they get written as if they all have 0 emotional intelligence and/or empathy makes me feel like I want to bang my head against a wall.
TBF Ruby has consistently through out the show been the one to help and inspire them. She's struggled a couple times but has always seemed to bounce back easily. So the others have unfortunately taken her for granted but it's not entirely there fault. In Volume 1 Ruby told Jaune that being leader is about shouldering the responsibility of your teammates and letting them rely on you to keep moving forward. Ruby has long neglected her own mental state with the belief that she needs to always keep it together or everything will fall apart. WBY is definitely guilty of not taking notice sooner but Ruby has been actively trying to keep it a secret and much like real depression it's hard to know how someone is really doing if they refuse to open up.

Of course Yang loves and cares for Ruby. The problem is that the volume and episodes are too short and too few to really show more interactions and development. Not just with these two but every other character. How cool would it have been during volume 7 atlas montage, we see the teams working with each. This would be hilarious Yang with Nora teasing Jaune with those thirsty moms.
It's not really just the lack of time. Only minutes, both for the viewer and in story, passed between when they saw Ruby beaten on the ground before vanishing. Yang looks a little glum before having a big wide smile when comforting Jaune, not even a sad smile. That looks way off.
Nah, mate. There's been more than enough time since Yang returned in Vol. 5. The show even went out of it's way to set up a conflict between them in Atlus that leads to the group being split up--which supposedly got resolved once they reunited. But the writers wanted to push for the Bumblebee ship and have Yang focus on Blake instead. They sacrificed her time with Ruby for their relationship. That's part of why Ruby lashed out at them earlier.

I don’t remember them doing anything or saying anything to ruby , she literally figures and fixes her self, none of them help her, it sucked how they just made ruby like well ok I’m good again , after all she went through, especially her so called sister who always got support from ruby but was to busy being gay to notice …
Soo, what are the chances that when Ruby comes back 'everything's ok again!' and basically sweep her entire emotional conflict under the metaphorical rug and instead treat this as Ruby getting a power up. Like, there's no conflict after she 'hatches' from the tree, she doesn't have any memory form of loss, she's no longer depressed or has any ptsd, or anything of the sort, nope! She's all better now! here's "classic" Ruby again!
I really hope this doesn’t happen, as it would completely erase her character development. While I don’t think she’ll suffer any memory loss, I’m hoping that her PTSD and depression are still a constant for her.
That actually interesting idea. Like imagine if Ruby will turn into herself from season 1 with zero memories of anything that happened during all this time. That wouldn’t be Ruby we all know now. Same goes for her friends. They all overcame their fears and problems and grown from that. And in contrast to them, Ruby will become “clean sheet". And then her friend would have to choice: return her memories and with them her traumas or leave her as she is.
The setup is wonderful for there to be lasting consequences of WBY’s emotional neglect of Ruby but CRWBY just aren’t brave and/or competent enough to execute.
You can’t. considering what Ruby is doing in that tree, it’s all emotional conflict in there. The only question is if it’ll be a team effort this time instead of Ruby emoting by herself again. If she doesn’t do it alone there will still be plenty emotional conflicts about Ruby changing drastically when they’re in Vacuo. Family drama galore, Taiyang might even punch Qrow for letting this happen if he hears about the presumed dead daughters.
Last episode ended with Ruby seemingly getting to talk to her mom again. Chances are she gets a pep talk that helps her come to terms with recent events, and maybe some insight on Salem, and she matures. Kinda like what happened in Naruto when he fought Pain.
What will be Ruby's choice at the end of this Volume? What will she become? Whatever the outcome, fingers crossed something comes out so that she can deal with Curious Neo herself.
i mean, there's probs a wacky magic reason and perhaps it's because the tree came to them the whole 'for the plot' thing can be pretty much justified entirely here given they're in fairy tale land

Nah that goes both ways she did call the people Jaune lived with for decades imaginary right after to Jaune they died. Trauma isn't an excuse. Jaune struck back after being told his feelings didn't matter, long story short both deserve an apology.

Not really, they foreshadowed this when Weiss looped. The tree comes when you’re ready to go there, not when you think you are. You can’t have something tying you to the Ever After if you want to leave or ascend (your purpose must be completed; Neo broke Ruby after the tree leaves appeared for her, she fed it to Ruby instead of taking her out) and you need something tying you to Remnant if you want to Go through the door. Ruby being at the tree meant the only thing keeping the group there was Jaune’s attachment to the Paper Pleaser’s village and him not accepting the tree until he sees the New versions being the same people at their core

actually this whole volume was ruby facing both the consequences of her mistakes and that of everyone else’s. i know the show is sorta blaming ruby for everything right now but if you go back you see that it’s everyone’s fault. ruby only called the shots because everyone always expected her to have the answers / make the choices for them. in 6x2 you could tell she made her choice to ask jinn after and only because of her team’s hostility towards qrow and oz. throughout volume 7 she wanted to tell ironwood and seemed to be the only one other than oscar who was struggling to shoulder the burden of when to tell him when it should have been a unanimous decision. she only contributed the idea of using the staff for the evacuation plan but after seeing the hound she was completely hopeless and out of it while the rest of them put together the rest of the plan. if ruby comes out okay like nothing happens it’ll be a big slap in the face because she’s been the one to solve everyone’s problems and now even her own. wby might not mean harm to ruby but they too should face the consequence to not owning up to their own mistakes and allowing ruby to shoulder the blame alone. being a leader doesn’t mean you’re just some punching bag for your teams faults. team jnpr is a great example of what a team should look like even without pyrrha they were always there to pick each other up and when they fought they apologized and changed for the better.
Ruby changing is her accepting that not everything is her fault and she doesn't have to hold the weight of the world on her shoulders. She very likely comes out as a new Ruby, knowing that her successes and failures are what make her Ruby. She has tried so hard to be "the perfect huntress", now she will choose to be herself.

I won't blame Ruby for the stuff they did in Argus, stealing an airship, destroying the mecha, blah blah blah, that's on Weiss. But most of the crap that happened was directly because of Ruby's choices. And even the stuff that wasn't, like Weiss not going back alone to Atlas to meet Ironwood and Bumbleby going to meet with Robyn, Ruby is still responsible for her Team in some fashion, that's what being the leader is all about. Once he saw the Paper Pleasers reborn as the Genial Gems, he accepted what the tree really was. That's all it took to get them there.

You know, a thought occurs. What if the Cat gets into the tree - and gets offered the same choice anyone else does. The ability to change to pursue what you want to be. And in becoming a person who can leave The Ever After and go to Remnant, the Cat becomes Neo and Neo becomes the Cat in truth - a new being born of the two who has their own motivations and drives, rather than the Cat puppeteering a broken girl? Someone driven to understanding others and seeing things as they are, rather than someone who lives amongst lies and loss and greed?
I think the Cat is beyond accepting and trying to better himself, otherwise he wouldn't be trying to use humans to get to Remnant. He's very similar to the Dwarf in the Flask (Fullmetal Alchemist).

Bro I don't know why but I think if Ruby came out killing people it might make her life a little bit easier, not to sound edgy, but to me she shows too much sentience to human enemies, but she ain't the problem exactly, what I'm trying to say is that no one actually has put their foot down. The only thing that made me happy throughout RWBYs old volumes from a couple years back is literally when Blake and yang killed Adam. This made me happy because they did not hesitate on taking his life, and made conclusion that he had to go or he was gonna keep chasing them. So something that that Ruby has never done was literally embrace reality until that one episode, and not only that, I hope I'm not the only one being able to see that Torchwicks Train of thought is becoming her own right?

Not just with these two but every other character. How cool would it have been during volume 7 atlas montage, we see the teams working with each. This would be hilarious Yang with Nora teasing Jaune with those thirsty moms.
It's not really just the lack of time. Only minutes, both for the viewer and in story, passed between when they saw Ruby beaten on the ground before vanishing. Yang looks a little glum before having a big wide smile when comforting Jaune, not even a sad smile. That looks way off.

Nah, mate. There's been more than enough time since Yang returned in Vol. 5. The show even went out of it's way to set up a conflict between them in Atlus that leads to the group being split up--which supposedly got resolved once they reunited.
But the writers wanted to push for the Bumblebee ship and have Yang focus on Blake instead. They sacrificed her time with Ruby for their relationship. That's part of why Ruby lashed out at them earlier.

Like, there's no conflict after she 'hatches' from the tree, she doesn't have any memory form of loss, she's no longer depressed or has any ptsd, or anything of the sort, nope! She's all better now! here's "classic" Ruby again!
I really hope this doesn’t happen, as it would completely erase her character development. While I don’t think she’ll suffer any memory loss, I’m hoping that her PTSD and depression are still a constant for her.
That actually interesting idea. Like imagine if Ruby will turn into herself from season 1 with zero memories of anything that happened during all this time. That wouldn’t be Ruby we all know now. Same goes for her friends. They all overcame their fears and problems and grown from that. And in contrast to them, Ruby will become “clean sheet". And then her friend would have to choice: return her memories and with them her traumas or leave her as she is.
The setup is wonderful for there to be lasting consequences of WBY’s emotional neglect of Ruby but CRWBY just aren’t brave and/or competent enough to execute.
You can’t. considering what Ruby is doing in that tree, it’s all emotional conflict in there. The only question is if it’ll be a team effort this time instead of Ruby emoting by herself again. If she doesn’t do it alone there will still be plenty emotional conflicts about Ruby changing drastically when they’re in Vacuo. Family drama galore, Taiyang might even punch Qrow for letting this happen if he hears about the presumed dead daughters.
Last episode ended with Ruby seemingly getting to talk to her mom again. Chances are she gets a pep talk that helps her come to terms with recent events, and maybe some insight on Salem, and she matures. Kinda like what happened in Naruto when he fought Pain.

Nah that goes both ways she did call the people Jaune lived with for decades imaginary right after to Jaune they died. Trauma isn't an excuse. Jaune struck back after being told his feelings didn't matter, long story short both deserve an apology.

Not really, they foreshadowed this when Weiss looped. The tree comes when you’re ready to go there, not when you think you are. You can’t have something tying you to the Ever After if you want to leave or ascend (your purpose must be completed; Neo broke Ruby after the tree leaves appeared for her, she fed it to Ruby instead of taking her out) and you need something tying you to Remnant if you want to Go through the door. Ruby being at the tree meant the only thing keeping the group there was Jaune’s attachment to the Paper Pleaser’s village and him not accepting the tree until he sees the New versions being the same people at their core

actually this whole volume was ruby facing both the consequences of her mistakes and that of everyone else’s. i know the show is sorta blaming ruby for everything right now but if you go back you see that it’s everyone’s fault. ruby only called the shots because everyone always expected her to have the answers / make the choices for them. in 6x2 you could tell she made her choice to ask jinn after and only because of her team’s hostility towards qrow and oz. throughout volume 7 she wanted to tell ironwood and seemed to be the only one other than oscar who was struggling to shoulder the burden of when to tell him when it should have been a unanimous decision. she only contributed the idea of using the staff for the evacuation plan but after seeing the hound she was completely hopeless and out of it while the rest of them put together the rest of the plan. if ruby comes out okay like nothing happens it’ll be a big slap in the face because she’s been the one to solve everyone’s problems and now even her own. wby might not mean harm to ruby but they too should face the consequence to not owning up to their own mistakes and allowing ruby to shoulder the blame alone. being a leader doesn’t mean you’re just some punching bag for your teams faults. team jnpr is a great example of what a team should look like even without pyrrha they were always there to pick each other up and when they fought they apologized and changed for the better.
Ruby changing is her accepting that not everything is her fault and she doesn't have to hold the weight of the world on her shoulders. She very likely comes out as a new Ruby, knowing that her successes and failures are what make her Ruby. She has tried so hard to be "the perfect huntress", now she will choose to be herself.
But is the point not for her to become the person SHE wants to be
Jaune's regrets are absolutely not gone. He literally froze up when Cat turned into Penny and when Fake Pyrrha attacked him

Ruby's the one who went behind his back to sabotage the Amity plan... and then did said plan later anyway. I won't blame Ruby for the stuff they did in Argus, stealing an airship, destroying the mecha, blah blah blah, that's on Weiss. But most of the crap that happened was directly because of Ruby's choices. And even the stuff that wasn't, like Weiss not going back alone to Atlas to meet Ironwood and Bumbleby going to meet with Robyn, Ruby is still responsible for her Team in some fashion, that's what being the leader is all about.
It's perfectly understandable that Ruby is sick of all of this.
I hope Ruby gets a re-design when she awakens, i never liked her current design, the previous one was better and the first one was the best.
I like her current design more than her Vol. 4 design. But if she does get a redesign, they should at least keep the hair, because it looks cool.

Every after three volumes they get a new design, like in vol 1-3 she was wearing her og combat skirt and in vol 4-6 she got a new one (idk what it's called🥲) and in vol 7-9 she got her haircut, and atlas uniform which is my fav design of her. You know, a thought occurs. What if the Cat gets into the tree - and gets offered the same choice anyone else does. The ability to change to pursue what you want to be. And in becoming a person who can leave The Ever After and go to Remnant, the Cat becomes Neo and Neo becomes the Cat in truth - a new being born of the two who has their own motivations and drives, rather than the Cat puppeteering a broken girl? Someone driven to understanding others and seeing things as they are, rather than someone who lives amongst lies and loss and greed?
I think the Cat is beyond accepting and trying to better himself, otherwise he wouldn't be trying to use humans to get to Remnant.

I feel like this season is very emotionally dead... like, I understand the emotional beats of everything, but all the characters just can't translate that emotion to the viewers, I mean this is RUBY, Yang's fuckin SISTER, and she barely reacts when she sees her both drink the tea and in this scene, yea she "cries" but that should be the minimum emotion for all of them.

Bro I don't know why but I think if Ruby came out killing people it might make her life a little bit easier, not to sound edgy, but to me she shows too much sentience to human enemies, but she ain't the problem exactly, what I'm trying to say is that no one actually has put their foot down. The only thing that made me happy throughout RWBYs old volumes from a couple years back is literally when Blake and yang killed Adam. This made me happy because they did not hesitate on taking his life, and made conclusion that he had to go or he was gonna keep chasing them.
So something that that Ruby has never done was literally embrace reality until that one episode, and not only that, I hope I'm not the only one being able to see that Torchwicks Train of thought is becoming her own right?
