  • In this watercolor tutorial video the focus will be on how to control your water when painting watercolor so that you can maximize your success. Water can be controlled in four different places - the jar, watercolor paper, watercolor palette, and your watercolor brushes. We'll talk about each aspect of these 4 areas to learn how to control your water!

    The best blot towel I’ve found is a car shammy. No joke. As long as the shammy is damp it works beautifully. Plus it’s reusable. Just wash it out every so often and it’s good to go. I got mine at the dollar tree 6 months ago and I’m still using the same one. No mold or moldy smell yet.
    Also, if I'm using honey based paint u never pre-spray, it would cause me to pick up waaaay too much paint as it's already ready to go.

    I am halfway through this video and so excited to learn so many great tips!!!! Thank you! I do have a question- what's the best way to flatten a painting if it still has some waves/buckles when dry?

    I am totally loving that peacock!! Wild and woolly ok feathery and fun!!! Want to try that. I tired. A peacock once and got all muddled in too many details soooo that was wasted paper in the end… good for scratch..now you have inspired me! Great water control tips!

      Yes there are a lot of details that you as an artist have to decide what to include - I'd love to do a tighter version of this too, and a line and ink version!

    Another outstanding video, suitable for all skill levels! You engaging style feels like you are personally addressing me. Using cheaper paper and too much water when I started painting really caused a lot of frustration. You are too young to remember life before the internet, so anyone starting now has a wealth of info at their fingertips. There was an artist on PBS, Alwyn Crawshaw, who always said beginners were too timid with the moisture and prescribed "bags of water", which I took too literally, and got a lot of buckling, as I like blending. Many artists warn that letting the colors dry reduces the intensity, but IMOSHO that is not the case. The only problem with drying out is that one can get dried bits of paint (like the texture of salt crystals) that streak on the paper. I use a Possum Palette so the colors don't get moldy, and the containers can be rearranged. Then I just open the ones I want to use.

      I actually do remember before the internet - I don't think I really had email before my twenties! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I've never heard of a Possum Palette. I'll have to look it up!

    How do you keep the water from puddling (even) without stretching the paper? I'm not good at stretching yet.

    • @rachelsstudiodotcom
      @rachelsstudiodotcom  2 роки тому

      I make sure there are never puddles on my paper, and then as the paper dries and the water soaks in, that is when it starts buckling, so hopefully by then it will be dry enough that it can't puddle. Also, use higher quality paper for less buckling.

      I like it for loose cats and it gets nice furred out edges. But I like Arches better and never use hardly anything else!
