Twice per year, The Sherpa set route through Icefall, lash + set ladders, fix ropes, and maintain passage (shifting when conditions demand), and risk their lives with each step.Then we arrive with our GoPro's and our cool gear and display ourselves as brave heroes. In 2014, 16 Sherpas died in this Icefall. This year 3 more. In fact, 1/3 of all deaths on Everest are Sherpas, irrespective of the fact that they are the strongest, most experienced climbers on the mountain, and with the most summits. Real Hero: The Sherpa.

Amateur climbers who present themselves as heroes are mistaken, and those who climb unprepared are the exact opposite, because they place others at risk. @@samidu492 I define amateur climbers as those who pay to climb, rather than professionals who get paid. So, yes of course amateurs should climb Everest... the idea that professionals only could go up there is very sad, indeed impossible... who would pay them? The question is, what qualifications should suffice among mountaineers--everyone including amateurs and professionals? It is tough to know... but the guiding companies should be held accountable if they fail to provide a safe experience for everyone.
And even worse considering Everest is one the safest mountains in the Himalayas compared to other mountains.
@@randompersonasdf Sadly, people die on Everest every year. Many of these deaths are preventable... if the climbers involved were better prepared. Without the effort of the Sherpa guides, the death rate would certainly be much higher.
I’m not a climber but love to watch videos on it. This one really helps me see what the climber experiences in ice flow. Never seen that before. Thank you.

My legs were frozen below my knees, Just watching this video. I couldn't cross one of those cracks. I honour the Sherpas and those who made it across. I even honour those who attempted it but couldn't make it.

If I hold the rope and walk on the ladder, I'll inevitably fall on one side or the other. That is pretty much a fact! So, I'll not climb Mt. Everest! On a serious note, respect to all the people who do it! You guys are amazing!

actually its not that uncommon. some people that work on the big mountains assume they will die there and so they want to enjoy their time. (if im wrong correct me)
I read a few months ago that the majority of Sherpa's despite their superior conditioning and genetics are actually smokers.

Is that ice around the crevices stable? Could one of the entire chunk of ice cave in and drop down ? How did you know ?
That Pemba Sherpa is badass.
TheJwwinter, it shifts all the time, so we cannot really know the stability of the crevasse lips. That’s why we never linger in the icefall. And... all the Sherpa mountaineers hired by IMG are amazing!

That is why they have to cross this Khumbu Icefall at dawn so that it doesn't break and shift after sunrise.

This part of the mountain is relatively low, so the challenge is not the elevation but rather the objective hazard of the shifting seracs. This day was a good, stable day--like most.

chances are you could do it too, the weather is gentle, the path is well founded, you have oxygen bottle and a sharpa will carry your stuff. This isn't K2, Everest is nothing compared to Broad Peak, Annapurna I, Nanga Parbat and many others

The craziest thing about this is having to cross the gaps over foot ladders that force you to look down for every step because your ice climbing boots have no business walking on them 😅
Wow, I was reading about this and had to see what it looked like and DANG, I would NEVER have the courage to navigate through this! I almost felt ill watching the climbers walking over the ladders perched above the massive cracks in the ice! I have been fascinated by mountaineering and love reading about it but it's something that I have no desire to do myself.

The region of Mount Everest has a beauty all its own but people need to remember that beauty comes with a price as many have died there. Remember the goal is to come back alive and to reach the summit is only second to that. I may never climb Everest as I don't do well with high place but I do remember what happened in 1996 and how quickly things can turn back. I may not have been there but I sure learned about it from news reports on those days and documentaries later on in life.
A mountain so treacherous and challenging that it's the only one you can't summit without a sherpa cooking your meals and carrying your stuff.
Oh mountaineers benefit from the expertise and support from Sherpa guides on many mountains, not just Everest. What was your experience climbing to the top?

Man the Sherpa looks like he is just out for a stroll! These have to be the most underpaid people on the planet!
Our Sherpa guides were incredible. This is why I strongly, strongly recommend that climbers hire the most ethical and often most expensive guiding outfits they can afford, so that their Sherpa guides are paid well and taken care of... even if some trolls then call you "rich" for doing so.

Everytime i see one of those massive cracks i cant help wondering just how far down do they actually go and how utterly terrified i would be to fall in one. What if you fell in but survived...how would anyone be able to help you?? It scares me to death to think about it but im addicted to watching these videos. I watch these amazed at the way everyone negotiates this terrain. And I find myself reeling from the thought that people with the same level of climbing experience as me but with money show up there thinking it’s reasonable for them to do it. I wish someone could help me grasp the thought process because I just cannot.

I am not in the slightest and I am seeing accounts of people up there who did little more to prep than take some day hikes and it just scares me so much. Fascinating stuff to watch..as is mountaineering which I've literally just starting getting into recently. Still can't fathom why people are so passionate about doing it though, it'd be one of the last things on earth I could think of that I'd get any pleasure from doing. Having said that though, these guys would probably think the same about how I get my kicks lol

Breathtaking scenery. Beautiful but so dangerous! So many crevasses and cracks in the ground. Is it snow or ice or both? One wrong move, or step, or the snow or ice giving way under a climbers weight and that's it! You plunge into an icy crevice many feet deep and become trapped forever unless you and your Sherpa and team have the strength and means to pull you out. And that is if you are not injured from the fall. A very perilous journey the Summit of Everest. Is it worth risking ones life to.say they climbed and conquered the mountains for glory? Too many others have tried and have failed over the years but for the ones have succeeded, they are the lucky ones. Still, thanks for sharing this. It was fascinating to watch. It felt like I was there with the team.
Exactly... love the whole idea of summiting but just knowing that over 300 people have perished ( yes it´s a small number compared to the ones that survive) makes me think about it twice. The last climber went to take a dump and died just 200 meters from the camp. Sad

I don't know what I would hate more, scaling a mountain like everest or exploring a deep cave system like Plurdalen. It looks beautiful though. Terrifying and a complete hell, but beautiful and tranquil at the same time.
Good foot work. I honestly was surprised the fixed lines weren't tattered from being spiked. I've heard so much about uninitiated climbers with crampons up there.
Thanks. This is twisted static line made in Korea.... super tough, and it withstands a lot. Most folks up there realize that their lives depend on the line, so they treat it with respect... most have been in crampons before, for sure.
Fantastic video, it brings back some memories. When I was there 4 or 5 years ago (the year before the quake) this portion almost made me cancel my climb. It's horrible and beautiful at the same time. The constant avalanche stress is nerve wrecking. Other than that, beautiful memories. Sadly Nepal is giving more and more permits every year and this won't end well. That place is beautiful (from Lukla to BC included). Since then I've been thinking over a lot of things which happened there and as beautiful as it is from the summit, I think the Himalayas themselves can keep a tourist's eyes busy for months, if not years. 8000+ meters climbing should be stopped, not only on Everest but on every mountain higher than 7,000 meters. That environment is not for humans. 300 deaths should be a testimony for that. 7 km height should be enough for anyone, and even that altitude is extremely dangerous. Nepal should invest in scenery tourism, because more and more people on Everest will lead one day to an inevitable huge catastrophe. Scenery tourism would make a lot of jobs and a lot of money for the locals. If I could I'd certainly ban climbing on every mountain higher than 7,000 meters.
Thanks for your thoughts. 2014 was a rough year too... sorry about that. I still think the mountain should be open to qualified climbers led by reputable services that have earned the right to be there... with regulations, this can be done relatively safely. There will always be risk... but agree that currently things could be improved. Thanks for your praise of Nepal, I hope it stirs others to visit this incredible place.
It was 2013, the year before the quake. The quake was the following year, I just checked my papers. I respect your opinion on the openness of the mountain, but I don't agree with it. Commercializing the mountain at this level won't lead to anything good. Each to their own. :) At least they should ban solo climbing and climbing without O. That would be a first step towards more safety.

The earthquake happened on April 25, 2015... I was at C2. In April of 2014 there was indeed a different catastrophe: An ice cliff from the West Shoulder of Everest fell into the icefall route at exactly the worst time, instantly killing 16 Sherpa mountaineers. Terrible times for sure. Progress could come from diversifying economic opportunities for the people of the Khumbu... and reserving mountaineering opportunities for the most experienced and qualified climbers. Sadly, I sense no meaningful movement in this direction.
Yes, sorry. You're right, the quake was in 2015 and the ice cliff avalanche before. I remember when I was there a young sherpa who died, he was with a Chinese group. It was his first Everest climb, if I remember well, and he fell on the descent from around C3. Silly and freak accident. I felt really sorry for him and his family. Then Alexey, the Russian climber. I've seen you guys were using 0 from C3 already, we used only from C4 to summit and back, plus during rest at C4, of course. Was it optional or did the expedition you were with ask you to? It certainly seems more energetic with O from C3. haha
O2 above C3 is standard for all Western climbers on IMG expeditions... clients and guides... the IMG Sherpa guides use it at C4 and higher, just as you did. Congrats on your summit, especially in 2013, a contentious year at C2 and a sad one with those deaths.

Great video, just wondering what time period this was during the day & could you actively feel the icefall shifting beneath you?
Thanks Gerard. We left C1 circa 7 AM. The crossing probably took a total of 2 hours. No, you certainly cannot feel the ice move, unless a serac collapses, which is a very dangerous situation. Thanks for your interest.
