THE KINGTONE SOLOIST : SRV TONE ENHANCED!

  • Hey Guys!
Well, Jesse at KingTone has done it again. A new creation that has nailed the tone in my head!
Though he claims this is only the “string singer” side of the Duellist, I can say i hear a bit more magic within the “body” function.
Couple of points i want to make:
There really is no SRV tone secret. Its a cranked clean style amp, coupled with the intensity and precision of his playing.. and his message.
And Yes, I know this video is SRV lick heavy, but it really inspired me to play some Stevie-esque licks.
In the end, its a killer versatile overdrive, and as a plus, it allows you to get a big tone at low volume!
    Hope you dig it!
    Thanks!
    Peace!

The tone without the pedal is already very good. That cranked amp (and some tricks he knows with his amp) and a very nice sounding strat on top. And then he has some SRV licks molded into his brain and fingers, doesn't matter which pedal (ts9, ts808, this one .. other similar tube screamers) ... he will sound fricking good. But if this pedal also gives good tones at LOW volumes (or better than other tube screamers) well that would be something special. SRV tones at low volume = searching the unicorn.

Of course nicks tone with the amp alone is going to be good he’s an amp tech and owns more vintage Amps then I do lol. Jesse Daveys work really speaks for itself, some of the dual stage overdrives Kingtones has put out really can make a deluxe reverb reissue sound like a cranked vintage super reverb. What makes these stand out is the frequency range that they have. So many overdrives take that low end out. I like the boost that he makes and am happy running that into a ts10 or klon and then into my 64 vibroverb. It is funny though how people spend years chasing something and don’t realize how much volume it takes to get that particular sound going. Pre amp and power amp tubes really need to be cookin and the speaker needs to really be pushing air. All people need is a good blackface or tweed and lots of volume and something to just hit the front end a little more 👌🏽

@@keithremedy I'm actually looking for a pedal to help my clean Deluxe Reverb Reissue when I can't turn it up enough to where it starts to breakup on its own. Do you think the Heavy Hand side of the Duellist could take a clean Deluxe Reverb and give it some hair, for that slightly broken up Hendrix type clean base tone that I could then run my fuzz into, along with the String Singer side? I already tried to accomplish this with a Timmy pedal, but it was a bit harsh sounding, especially with the bright cap in the vibrato channel. I was thinking the voicing of the Duellist may work better with a Fender circuit.
      Thanks!

@@xderiwx Hey, I have a 65 DRRI also and love it but had the same issue. I use a vox silk drive and set it to just before breakup, then hit it with a ts808hw and keeley blues driver. Sounds great and I just turn both pedals off for clean stuff.

Back in oh, I'd guess 1994 or so I randomly bought a CD by a UK-based band named The Hoax called 'Sound Like This' and thought there were alot of SRV tones on that record. Then The Hoax made a trip to the US and I caught them at Fleetwoods in DC and I was just fucking floored by what I saw and heard. (Fleetwoods was a short-lived high end club that 'the man' Mick Fleetwood himself had opended in a up-scale DC neighborhood...can't even remember where in DC that place was but Fleetwoods only lasted a couple of years.) The Hoax were an absolutely AMAZING band with two lead guitarists that played SRV licks and carried SRV tone like...well the man himself. I'll never forget that show. I instantly became a fan of Jesse Davey and ended up reaching out to him and we corresponded a little bit after that show. We even traded a couple of obscure SRV recordings back when I was amassing my collection of almost 700 live SRV recordings. He sent me a couple of live Hoax show recordings as well that I played to death. It's been a while since I heard his name until I watched this video this morning (thanks Nik). I didn't realize that he was the principal guy behind King Tone. I'm super glad to see that he's still making a living in the music industry, but damn that band was so fricking good that I can't help feel some pangs of melancholy that they didn't survive the long haul. They were soooo fucking good.

Wow awesome story. You have over 700 live SRV recordings? That’s amazing. I have to ask what do you think his best live performance or performances ( because I’m sure there are several that are debatable for the title of the best ) do you consider to be his best? I love the El Mocambo set but I’m sure there are plenty more I’ve haven’t heard as good or better. Recently I’ve been getting into a lot of SRV bootlegs that found here on UA-cam and there is some real gold out there.

Never apologize for one of your videos being "SRV Lick Heavy"! That's why we're here man! This might be your best tone to date honestly- just really, really, really good tone out of that Super. It's SUPER! Haha. Also- nitpicky I know- but that's a "toggle" switch on top. Dip switches are the little internal switches that you have to use a pen or pointy thing to move- or your fingernail... usually very small. Again- just great tone and playing here Nik- just great playing! You just inspired me to dial in my Duelist with my '67 Super Reverb to try to get that same tone! Watch out family- wake up!

Or crank the amp and have the soloist volume low like the video. Also is thIs the best pedal in the range for this purpose. ? Thanks Russ.

Bro I'm wearing like a $600 pair of headphones...I've been watching you for a pretty long time ever since Matt told his subs to come check you out.
I've always liked your tone it was pretty good(I can say from personal experience that having a good mid-to-late'60s"Vox Wah-Wah"pedal certainly doesn't do anything to harm your sound.I personally have one from the 1960s(The ones that came in the all aluminum chassis with the black paint that chips off all the time), either way I think my Vox wah is a G-Damn slammin' thing to have on the floor in front of me, especially when I'm the lead guy in a three-piece Texas Style Blues band.Other than that I've always used a MXR-EQ pedal just to give me a little bit of boost when I'm going to play a lead, stepping forward on stage 2-3 paces(That's basically how I let the band know what's getting ready to happen).but I'm digressing from the entire point of this comment, let me get back to what I wanted to say.
That pedal right there you got, that your buddy gave you? Jesus-H-Christ on a Rubber Fukkin' Crutch!.. not only did that thing vastly improve your tone? I could tell right away by the way you were playing,it was inspiring you to push the boundaries of what you consider to be the limits of your playing. This video right here? I've never heard you play this well before(and I'm not trying to say that you weren't a great player before you got this)Honestly, you just upped your game by getting it.You get up on stage with that thing, you crank your amp.The tubes warm up for about half an hour? You're going to be ripping people's faces off as soon as you begin playing(which morbidly enough,is something that us guitar players aspire to do..lol). If those things go into production and they become available you need to let your subs know.Because like I said I just use my Wah and my EQ.I refuse to go cordless.I'm way too old to switch that up at this point,& therefore I just use these 2 pedals I got on the stage floor. If I can buy one of those janks?I could see me retiring that MXR-EQ.when it goes into production,I need that pedal in my life.I'm a heavy gauge strings guy myself like you are.I use .11-.54s(I've even used.56s).When I'm playing at home,I just sit there and Jam along with live records of bands like Santana at the Fillmore'68,Band of Gypsys@ the Fillmore,Allman's live just about anyplace before late 1971.But when I'm onstage my adrenaline's pumping,I beat the living hell out of my guitar. There's been occasions when I busted a .56 E string in the middle of a solo(and I don't have Caesar to come running up behind me to flip that guitar out real quick so nobody even notices but when you watch it in slo-motion it's freaking amazing).I might be afraid to take that thing on stage cuz there's a possibility I might rip the neck right off of my guitar. Sometimes I take my fist & pound on the body(I'm sure you're aware of doing that it's really good crazy feedback at high volumes). Sorry to be so long-winded but I'm just sitting here talking like I'm in the room with you Bro.In my own personal opinion(whether you care or not)you should keep that thing in your setup permanently.Because it makes you play better than I've ever heard you play, and it makes you sound better than I've ever heard you sound.... Apologies for the long-winded speech. Stay up Brother. It's up to us and let these people know the blues is still alive and kicking. And if one of us dies somebody else is going to be there to pick up where we left off.✌️😀✌️

The Soloist seems like it’d be a great pedal to add to a collection and rotate in and out on a board, depending on what sound a song dictates or what the guitarist hears in his head, trying to convey that through talent and gear.
