@john Wilson Spitfire has just released Originals Intimate Strings ($29, Albion II Recycled samples made from Flautando articulations) which sounds a bit similar so both are nice options and not too expensive!

Thank you so much! There is a scene in Castaway, when Tom Hanks finally gets off of the island and looks back. The strings come up and it gets me every time- the feeling of sadness and / or lonleyness. They use it again when he looses his beloved "Wilson". It is a perfect example of (what I now know) is voice leading. Great Stuff!

Your you tube videos are absolute gems. You plant so many seeds. It’s up to us to water & fertilize them. One thing I would request (if not too much trouble): In post, add the chord names on top of the video. Understandably, as creativity hits, it can take over (what a wonderful thing!) and commentary can sometimes have small gaps. It’s great seeing the keyboard from above, but it can be challenging to figure out the notes being played and the proper chord name. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and for sharing with such great flair and style!
I have viola de gamba and sospiro strings. I absolutely love Ben’s stuff. The guy is a superstar. I’m an orchestral noob but I’ve found his stuff gives a really organic intimate and natural sound. Works best when not too polyphonic. I use in conjunction with NOVO essentials because I don’t have thousands of dollars for libraries.

Auddict's Strings of Europe are really good. The sound of that room is my prefered sound ever mostly for the cello part. Amazing. And the legatos are superb. They where on sale on Audioplugin Deals a couple months ago and I got those for a nice price. Angel strings too are very nice ensemble strings. Great sound and unique articulations. Hope this helps.

When testing new synthesizers, I try every preset without tweaking anything. Strings are one of my favorite sound groups. Thanks for telling us about Ben's product. And more important, thanks for teaching us how to properly work with strings while composing.

I got this when it first came out. And pair it with his Cello Textures. These make a great combination. And don't forget that in Sospiro. You also have the individual instruments as well. So you can really experiment with it.

Hi Guy, great work - thank you. I moved from Logic to Cubase and missed the "explode" function. If you have considered voicings while playing I found assigning seperate midi channel to lines on the piano roll (do this by highlighting the seperate lines from your recording then changing their channels on the info bar at the top) then you can mock up a part using different instruments very quickly - under "event colours" select "channel" to see the channels you assign to each part. Then "dissolve part" from the arrange window under "midi" et voila - no deleting or copy and paste parts necessary - until of course you come up with a better idea! Thanks again. First time post a long one.

Please, do more videos about orchestration. An example of a bit started in BBC Discover and then how to move to Core version for example. What goes where and what and how to fill up the gaps. That would be brilliant.

This thing about getting parts not to sound like a "block" your moving around is actually interesting, cause if you look at an instrument like the Yamaha Genos, it actually have this built into the instrument with certain orchestral patches when you play these standard block chords you can get it to automaticly "revoice" your chords so it doesn't sound like a George Shearing version. I remembered first time I heard about this I thaught that it was just another take on the typical "Duet" type of trick from older arranger boards where the instrument just ads the chord from left hand to your solo voice, but it actually works quite well to get a simple triad or bigger chord progression to sound like you actually have 3 or 4 single orchestral parts going on at the same time. So you can actually get a patch made of a couple saxophones a trombone and a clarinet to sound alot closer to eg. a Glen Miller version. Dependent on how you play the chords the instrument will automaticly play a different note progression with each sound. Technonology can be amazing some times.
Just to say to anyone thinking of doing the Making music course DO IT! It's really informative and is delivered in Guy's inevitable style. Today I've knocked up a Drum and bass doodle with some string chords but will blow those suckers apart and layer them on individual instruments tomorrow. Just need to Google what notes are limited on real instruments, Thanks Guy 👍

I think you have heard about the Heavyocity librarys. Them are absolutely my favourites and sound so inspiring. It would be nice if you tried out the NOVO and FORZO librarys but the others are also very exciting!
