Musa Basjoo Banana Winter Protection 2024/2025

- This video shows how I will be overwintering my Musa Basjoo banana plant outside in the UK this year. Musa Basjoo is the cold hardiest banana that you can grow. This will be its 4th winter in the ground. I will also post updates in spring to show how it has got on over the winter.

They’re massive! Hoping for a mild winter! 🥶 thanks for sharing. I’ve covered mine, hoping for some good growth this year!
Thanks, Jerry! Yeah, they are pretty big now; probably getting a bit too big for protecting lol. I guess I could have cut the top of them slightly so they would fit a little better, but I would like to preserve as much as I can. I hope yours grows well this year too 🙌
Happy New Year 🎉
Happy New Year, Sam! 🎉
Nice job Peter. It is the 2nd Jan and the temperature out in my garden is forecast to fall to -1 to-2 tonight. I will be fleecing my Musa Basjoo tomorrow.
Thanks, Mike! It's already -2°C in my garden tonight 🥶. I'm hoping it doesn't drop much lower 🤞
Looks like a sound plant protection plan, Peter.
I hope your in-ground clementine and avocado are nice and snug.
You know the olive green plastic tarps I keep on raving on about? Well, they come in various size options, and the very largest size can entirely cover a caravan! So, if your current frost bag is no longer adequate because of the increase in height of your in-ground Musas, you might want to look into the plastic tarps.
I've just gone outside and focused the laser beam of my IR thermometer on the apex of my plastic tarp protection 'tent'. It read minus 5.7 degrees Centigrade! Cold indeed!
Thanks, Gary! Hopefully, the winter isn't too harsh 🤞
Yeah, the clementine and avocado trees are all wrapped up again and have their lights turned on to keep them nice and warm 🙌
Yeah, I'm sure a tarp would work pretty well as well. The only concern I have is whether it would be breathable or not. I worry slightly that a plastic layer over the top of the banana might cause a buildup of humidity and potentially encourage it to rot.
Yeah, it's definitely baltic out there tonight 🥶
@@PeterEntwistle I measured minus 8.2 degrees Centigrade on my tarp at 6am this morning 🥶
Quite a bit colder than the forecast overnight low for my area, which was minus 4 Centigrade.
@@garycard1456 I recorded a low of -4.6°C on one of my sensors near my Chilean guava and -2.3°C next to the wall where the clementine and avocado trees are.
Nice job protecting it for another winter! I' ve decided to only protect one stalk of my basjoo to see if that will help it divert the energy and get super tall as it had 6-7 clumps of suckers. Just covered it in leaves and clippings and threw a bin over it lol. We'll see if that is enough this winter.
Yeah, in our climate they take years to get to this size. In a warmer summer climate, they can grow from the ground to well over 9ft in a single growing season. Most winters I could probably get away with not protecting them, especially at this size now. Although in saying that with how cold it got the other night, I'm glad I did protect them 🥶. Hopefully, yours make it through the winter there 🤞
I'm surprised you weren't tempted to leave the rear one completely uncovered Peter as an experiment to see what would happen 😁
I was actually going to do that, but because I couldn't really tether it down properly, due to the bag not quite reaching the floor, I decided to wedge it against the wall to help hold it in place. I guess I could have cut the top of the tallest ones slightly to help it fit over, but I wanted to keep as much height as I could lol 😂
@PeterEntwistle I agree with keeping the height as they will be more likely to flower sooner although I'd loved to have properly tested the hardiness. Perhaps you should have removed one of the pups at the start of the season to plant it elsewhere so you could leave it unprotected 😉
@@lyonheart84 Yeah, I would like to put it to the test, especially at the size it's at now. As soon as I manage to get one to flower I will probably stop protecting them and see what happens lol 😂. I actually do have another tiny clump in the front garden unprotected. It was very small in 2023 and froze to the ground but it did come back last year. I don't expect it to make it this winter intact either though as the pups are only about 6 inches tall lol and it's in a very exposed position, probably over 8 meters away from my house.
I'm still eagerly awaiting the appearance of the flag leaf of my indoor Cavendish
I'm hoping your Cavendish flowers for you soon, Gary 🤞. I've been trying to take better care of my Super Dwarf Cavendish banana plants that I have growing under my grow light. I've just repotted a couple of them that were rootbound, so I'm hoping they will continue to grow over the winter 🤞
