Assessing The Outdoor Tropicals After The Cold Spell - January 2025

- Today, I feature some of my plants which have been exposed to sub-zero temperatures over the last week. We reached the lowest temperatures so far this winter during this cold spell and also had a good covering of snow.

Your covers with incandescent bulbs underneath plus the aquarium heater have been remarkable Peter. You must be delighted. The avocado in particular is amazing
Thanks, Brett! Yeah, I am delighted they all appear to be undamaged. Yeah, I have been very pleased with how the avocado has been doing, of course, we could still have more cold spells to come, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this was the worst one 🤞
Good to see your plants have survived the recent cold spell Peter, and your efforts to keep them protected seem to have paid off. Amazing to see the Brazillian banana in ground surviving these very low temperatures.
Thanks, Louise. I hope they won't show any signs of damage over the next few weeks. But it's very encouraging that the banana is still in one piece. I was worried that I would just find a mushy mess when I uncovered it.
well done in keeping them all alive during the icy weather
Thank you, Trisha. Yeah, I am so happy they appear to have made it through this cold spell. I just hope it stays milder for the rest of winter now 🤞
They are looking really good. I'm especially impressed that you can keep your Clementine outside. I know my husband would love to move all my Citrus trees outside right away😄😁
Thanks, Dani! Yeah, keeping the clementine outside all the time is a bit of an experiment. Of course, providing it with protection can be a bit of a pain sometimes. I wish I could just plant citrus and not have to worry about the cold in the winter. That being said, I actually really like the idea of having citrus trees indoors with fruits ripening all winter just like you have, although when I've had them indoors before they went downhill pretty quickly. I find it easier to keep happy in my greenhouse, also I'm out of space indoors lol 😂
@PeterEntwistle I do really enjoy having them inside, especially when they start flowering, but they are all growing, so I may have to find another place (like a bigger greenhouse 🤞🤞) for them eventually. It is always amazing to see huge Citrus trees growing happily in other warmer countries
I tell you what, Peter, I am well impressed with how the avocado has pulled through. And the lemon guava has fared well with the aquarium heater setup.
It has been ridiculously cold. Our climate ought to be reclassified as Tundra or Subarctic.
Thanks, Gary! Yeah, I'm also very impressed with how the avocado has done. It actually seems to be doing better than the clementine. I think it's quite likely that it is a Mexican type of avocado, based on the scent of the leaves. Although it's not a grafted tree it should make an excellent rootstock variety for me to graft other varieties onto in the future 🤞
Yeah, it has been incredibly cold as of late. Thankfully it has warmed up a bit now, although, of course, it's not exactly t-shirt and shorts weather out lol 😂
Wow!! I admire the persistence in keeping these alive!! 🫡
Thanks! Yeah, it's quite annoying when we get cold spells like this one we've just had. I hope it stays milder for the rest of winter now 🤞
Cool idea with the water heater. I've never tried that method before. Great cold protections. We're about to get blasted next week.
Thanks, G! Yeah, it seemed to work pretty well, at least for a small plant. I'm not sure how well it would work on a larger tree. I hope it doesn't get too low in your area and all your plants make it 🤞
I'm glad most of your plants have made through the most recent cold snap, Peter. Lets hope hit warms up a bit soon. Can't wait for spring.
I've been taking winter off from posting videos of my plants as I am spending all my free time on hard-landscaping my allotment. The site was like a rubbish tip but I've cleared it and have dug out a steep slope to create level tiers. Still a lot to do but my aim is to have the landscaping completed by spring.
Thanks, Dom. Yeah, I'm very happy the protection methods I put in place seem to have been working well. Yeah, spring can't come soon enough lol 😂
Ah yeah, I thought it had been a while since I saw an update on your plants. I can't wait to see what you've been working on at the allotment! I must admit I've not been to my allotment since before Christmas. With all the snow and ice lately, I haven't been able to get there and then before that it had been raining so much, I imagine the ground would have been completely saturated. My plot doesn't have very good drainage compared to my garden.
Nice to see they survived!
Thanks! Yeah, most of them seem to be doing ok considering how cold it got. I just hope that it stays milder for the rest of winter 🤞
@ yeah that avocado looks perfect too. The cold always comes when you least want it to 🤣
@ Haha, yeah it certainly does 😂
your avocado is the star performer here (wth protection), it looks very very healthy.
The chilean guavas old growth is fine, however whenever you see dark red on the leaves, like those just below the damage sustained in November, it likely signifies the leaves will drop.. so youll probably notice the top half of those protruding top stems lose their leaves, but dont worry, it will bounce back quickly by April to May. It just means it will perhaps be delayed in fruiting next year.
Thanks, Stephen! Yeah, the avocado does seem to be doing pretty well at the moment.
Yeah, I'm hoping the Chilean Guava will recover in spring, luckily I do have a few in pots that seem to be absolutely fine, as I brought them inside on the coldest nights 👍
