I was considering buying this for the distraction free aspect but the price is more than I'm willing to invest at this time. My solution was to get an old iPad (a friend upgraded to a newer model) and a mechanical keyboard. I only use the iPad for writing so it offers the distraction free environment I was looking for. So far it's a great substitute for my needs and budget. Great review though. Just subscribed!
What I find a little funny is how the watch you wear in those shots is a way more versatile and multi-functional tool than your digital typewriter. I do understand that's the point of this device, but it still makes me chuckle a little.
Thanks for showing us the latest refresh of the gen 3. Can you give us an updated video on how you did the keycap replacement along with which ones you purchased and link if possible?
Sorry I somehow missed that part of your comment! No, I haven't replaced them yet, but I'll do a quick video about it. I'm not sure if the replacements I got are going to be the same quality as the new ones that come standard, but we'll see. Here's a link to the ones I bought: getfreewrite.com/products/black-keycap-set-for-freewrite-3rd-gen-compatible
pity you turned down the light. it was much more legible in the video when brighter. boy that lag. one reason i went for the alpha. little did i know ...
Thanks for the comment. I’ll turn the light up when filming. The lag is unfortunate. I was just writing today on my Supernote with Bluetooth keyboard, and it has less lag and a much cleaner looking refresh. The lag on the Freewrite doesn’t bother me too much, but there are e-ink screens out there doing it better.
That’s a tough question. I got the Alpha used and had a discount code from nanowrimo that I used for the typewriter. If I was only going to keep one, it would be the typewriter. It’s definitely a luxury, but I think I’m going to write more with it than without, so it’s worth it to me.
It's well crafted, and I like the aesthetics. But $650? For an e-ink screen, a PCB, a battery and a keyboard? Hell no. I don't care how aesthetic something is, that is a horrible value proposition. Just get a small, cheap laptop, stick linux on there and don't connect it to the internet. Or if you are going to connect to the internet, use syncthing or something similar to sync to any number of devices.
Please subscribe if you liked this video, and let me know in the comments what other kinds of videos you'd like to see. Thanks for watching!
thanks! Good, sensible and careful report on experience with Freewrite Smart. I own a Traveler but am assessing acquiring this device,
i remember using smart typewriters in 3rd grade. its cool seeing the high end ones
NOW we have to have them send you a Hemingwrite!! Reviews are the best I’ve seen so far. (No I’m not a bot)
If you could put in a good word, I would gladly make room for a Hemingwrite!

Fair enough, but have you ever tried to write a novel on a watch?
@@WritersWins 🤣🤣🤣
Great video. Good luck with your writing.
Thanks, you too!

I’m keeping my AlphaSmart, but thanks
Whatever helps you get the words down!
Do you think it’s worth it over the alpha? 3 times the price!

This does not make sense for the price, remarkable 2 makes way more sense.
Nice review, just wanted to say you sound a bit like another youtuber @TechnologyConnections :)
