    I'm looking to upgrade shortly (my ENTIRE PC) and was surprised to see that MANY 'modern' PC cases don't even have drive bays. Most new pre-builts don't include optical drives either. I can't see NOT having one! I suppose (to a point) that cheap, plentiful and high storage USB drives, external drives, and cheaper SSDs kinda' eclipsed them, but I still think there's nothing like having an actual physical backup media option.

      I was in the same boat in 2015 when I built a new PC. I ended up rolling with the times and bought the Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV which has nothing but a sheet of metal for the front. After that I built the current PC and bought a Silverstone case from 2011 just to get my drives bays back. If you're shopping around and are interested I posted the Silverstone case last week and compare it to the previous case. Good luck on your new build!

I have m.2 nvme drives (OS + scratch disk for video editing + games storages), 2.5 inch SATA SSDs (frequent storage for active projects), this 4K UHD optical drive (read old games, archive and rip/watch movies) and an older style spinning platter 4tb HDD (more storage for things I need but not on a regular basis. @@NetizenKing Sorry, I can't post links here, instant shadow ban from UA-cam.
      But if you do a little digging online, you will find that the BD-R specification had provisions for archival grade stuff before M Disc existed. Then, BD-R M Discs are visibly indistinguishable from bog standard BD-R. And to top it off, you can burn BD-R M Discs in a standard blu-ray drive. So the question is, what makes M Disc distinct from any higher quality BD-R?
      And then there is the fiasco with what is left of Verbatim selling organic dye discs, same ID and all, with M Disc branding and an M Disc price tag.
      The conclusion and the general consensus seems to be to use DVD-R M Disc if you are greatly concerned with archival over a long time.

    Nice stuff man. I've been considering going back to optical media too for archival because HDDs and SSDs are stupidly expensive in my country (Brazil), and also because archiving huge amounts of data in traditional hardware gets expensive really, really fast when you add redundancy and backups into the equation, not to mention the server grade hardware that you might need to handle a bunch of drives.
    For me it would be mostly for animes, since my music collection is still kinda modest.

    I've had this this drive for a few years in the EBK version and it's great quality. I use it to archive some data and as additional backup method. If I don't need some data for regular use I like to hide it away on a disc in a drawer instead of hoarding them on my working drives. It's a great medium but unfortunately, it's progress has stagnated for a number of reasons. With natural progress we should have 1 TB discs at reasonable prices available today but instead 100/125 GB discs are not affordable at all.
    Another bad news is that Pioneer stopped distributing their drive to Europe (and possibly other parts of the world). There's the new BDR-213xxx drive but we can't buy them normally, except from some individuals who import them directly from Japan and sell for 3 times as much.

If some new enterprise level (and enterprise-priced) tech appears for data centres then for me this will not be that exciting anymore - I miss the days when I could give someone a disc with a video from an event - now most often they would not have any device to play it with. I know for the next couple of years the consumer level discs will still be around and for my usage (documents, source code, some photos and small amount of videos) the current capacities are okay but it would be nice if the format was more alive.

    M-Discs made sense for DVD-Rs as they were almost exculsively produced with organic dye that could degrade
    However BD-Rs usually come with anorganic dye (called HTL), although organic ones exist (LTH)
    Now it's debated wether M-Discs based on the BD-R standard have any special property compared to BD-R HTL, especially because they can be accessed and written to by non M-Disc drives and also Verbatim as a manufacuter of M-Disc has started to re-label their regular BD-R as M-Discs, stating that they are within spec of M-Discs. Besides a possible better quality control, those M-Discs might be identical to the way cheaper BD-Rs

      @dlarge6502 14 годин тому +1

      I professionally use tape at work and also at home.
      Tapes last up to around 30 years or a little more. Right now I'm reading data off tapes that old at work. The oldest tapes I have go back to 1993. They are readable, the drives work fine, just need a clean inside by someone who knows how to clean a tape drive. And that's the issue. These tapes have reached their intended design life and although they could go further than this they are already showing signs of age. However these are very different from the current tapes we use, made of different stuff, still the LTO8 tapes we currently use are still intended to last 30 years.
      The issue with the old tapes is they shed material onto the drive heads. All old tapes can do that as the binders start to fail. Tape needs direct (well, as far as we are concerned it's direct) contact with the heads and tape path, all of which then build up magnetic deposits. Clogged heads can't read data. No big deal, I just clean them again and try reading the tape again, but then it clogs the heads again, so I repeat the cycle till the tape stops shedding too much and I can get a full dump off that tape.
      That's how I know these tapes are starting to get beyond their life. If it gets too bad the tape can actually stick to itself and tear. As these are enterprise grade data tapes stored for 30 years in a air conditioned room, I don't expect sticky tapes, but I have had several VHS tapes stick and tear while capturing at home.
      So we know tape lasts several decades, the hardware too. They outlive HDDs easily. Sure I have HDDs from that time running just fine but, they hold far less than that tape and a HDD may run today, yet be totally dead tomorrow.
      Optical media however have a major advantage of tape. No contact needed. They are read with a laser. They also don't stick to themselves as, they don't touch themselves. However, the tapes are designed to last 30 years ish, but many optical media bought by so many wasn't designed to last more than a few years. Cheap crap like Princo discs etc.
      Good optical discs are easy to find, just cost a bit more for fewer discs. They will last as long as tapes easily and many will easily go far beyond that. The tapes win for capacity, and the reliability of the hardware used to read and write them (they cost thousands of dollars/whatever because the stuff used inside them is not the pedestrian metals and plastics you usually use).
      I'm personally archiving to BD-R SL and DL, specifically using Verbatims MABL discs. I test the error rates of these discs every few years to literally plot in a graph how they are aging and to catch issues before they arise. I do this with CD-R and DVD+R which I also still use for certain types of data and archival. Frankly I've seen very little over 25 years of burning and testing that worries me. Heck, my pressed CDs from the 80's still have error rates far below anything approaching worry.
      But my backup of my archive is on LTO tape. I'm using both.

    • @dlarge6502

      @@NetizenKing You can get a secondhand external LTO4 tape drive for not much more than that Blu-ray writer. A tale for a bit more.
      You'll need to learn about connection methods, like SCSI or sas.
      However even though I used tape to backup my optical archive, that's for me to use to recover from. I don't expect many after me to read my tapes, I intend them to read the discs!

    I have an LG external Blu-Ray drive that I bought a decade ago and which, as of December 2024, seems to no longer be able to read Blu-Rays (although it can still read DVDs for some reason). I was in the middle of watching a Blu-Ray of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer on a laptop a few days before Christmas when the old LG Blu-Ray drive just suddenly gave up the ghost and I had to finish watching Rudolph on my Playstation 4. In case it was just an issue with the Rudolph disk, I tried other Blu-Rays, even ones I've watched on the same drive recently, and none of them worked. I'm not going to complain about that, the drive was a decade old and I'm fully aware that Blu-Ray drives don't last forever.
    However, looking for a replacement, it's hard to find decent name-brand external Blu-Ray drives that aren't writers. I haven't burnt a disk in years (and I still have working burners for DVD-R and CD-R if I need to burn those) so I'd rather spend less and get a read-only Blu-Ray drive but the sub-C$100 read-only Blu-Ray drives on Amazon Canada all seem to be no name players with brand names that seem to be randomly-generated by AI and I don't want to spend C$80 just to get something that might only work for a few months, not a decade like my old LG drive did.

      Regarding why blue and white used to be a lot less common in 80s and 90s, Veritasium has an awesome video that explains the technical burdens of making it happen, and once they did, it exploded in popularity in the 2000s as you said. Being a 90s kid, it's so nostalgic to my eyes 😅

Also it's kinda slow and getting disks is expensive and lack of availability in "normal" retail shops is just not great. Expensive, but more convenient than disks and in long run cheaper.

      I think it really depends on your usecase. Compact SSDs are great for fast speeds and convenience but I wouldn't want to use them for archiving data over a long period of time since data is just saved in an electrical state instead of physically written. It's much more prone to failure over time. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @MJ-uk6lu
      @MJ-uk6lu 5 днів тому

      @@NetizenKing I'm aware of that, but I just feel that all media is prone to some unreliability and it's inevitable. Scale isn't the same, but still it appears to me that considering convenience just makes more sense unless you are making archival your 24/7 job and doing personal archival on side.
      BTW there are industrial SSDs and HDDs. not sure what magic they have inside of them, but they exist. They cost a lot, but are still rewritable, with adapter connectable with USB. I only speculate, but those SSDs might just use SLC flash storage, which is more write/rewrite resisting. But it's also better at maintaining data integrity if drive is disconnected.

      SD cards have a little blob of plastic that may write protect the device, but whether it works or not is entirely up to the reader and OS 😢
      Read only media, in fact WRITE ONCE media is fundamental for anyone using a computer. We had it everywhere but to save a few pennies we have been educated to make do without it. Frankly, thats terrible.
