Big Picture: The Seventh Army Story
Today the major American ground force in Europe is the Seventh Army. It is a combat-ready fighting force--with traditions and standards of which it can be proud. In telling its story, THE BIG PICTURE goes back to July 1943, when the Seventh was one of the great armies formed to crack the walls of fortress Europe. Film viewers will see the Seventh born at sea, on the way to its first campaign--the invasion of the not-so-soft underbelly of Europe. Its target-- Sicily. Commanded by General Alexander M. Patch--a soldier who roamed his front lines--the Seventh anticipated the German operation "Northwind" which came on New Year's Eve 1944 and continued for 23 days. Today, in exercises such as WINTERSHIELD in Germany, the Seventh trains with other NATO forces. The training emphasis is on combat readiness, and the training continues in terrain and under weather conditions as rugged as any Seventh Army encountered during World War II. Today this Army stands ready--a pyramid of fighting strength--to resist aggression.

@victor soto I only no of my father in law, He has a 7th Army patch on his uniform but he also has a patch on his Ike jacket that said he was also in the 3rd Army at one time, his discharge papers said he was in the 264th Field Artillery Battalion, He was basic trained in the field Artillery but his job was a line man. He didn't have his ribbons but on his discharge it listed the places he was in and the ribbons he received. The only thing I know for sure is that he landed in Normandy, was in the battle of the bulge and the bridge at Remagon I remember we watched the movie and he told me a few stories about it. Unless I asked him he never talked about it. the other two, one served in Italy and one was in the infantry in Germany and was wounded. he had an unusual patch it had a flaming sword on it. your dad might be from Texas, that's were the 36th INF Div. is from.
the 36th infantry div. had an arrow head with a T on it?

I am well aware that hindsight is twenty-twenty. However, I can't help but think the victory that could have been accomplished had we used our combined sea power of surface ships and submarines, along with our air power to deny the Germans the use of the straight between Massina and the mainland. Instead of having to fight them yet another time we could have caught them in a pincer between Montgomery and Patton destroying them while they were still on the island.

I can totally see what you mean, however, and this is just my opinion, at the time of the Sicily campaign the naval assets for operation Overlord were being assembled and in light of that the allied navy’s needed all the vessels available and so the closing of the Messina strait would have been deemed a tactical decision not to risk loosing vessels that could have led to “D-day” being delayed, a delay that would have meant a greater chance of the invasion plan being discovered and putting even more lives on the line to just gain a beachhead in Normandy, any major delay could in theory have put the invasion back by a year, a year the Russian forces couldn’t afford to have, things between Joe Stalin and President Roosevelt, and especially Prime Minister Churchill were fraught enough with Joe Stalin demanding the new front be opened in as early as 1943, just after the USA joined the War, and at every conference the “Big 3” held. As I said, just my humble opinion. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
