- The boats are coming! This episode of 'Behind The Door' chronicles the unique annual Sturgeon Bay event: Winter Lay Up. This year I follow and photograph 3 freighters at multiple locations: the Cason Callaway, the Joseph Block, and the American Mariner, and include plenty of drone footage.

Stunning work. I love your concluding comments about the freighters and crews. Your homage to them is exceptional.
Thank you galechicago325!
I appreciate the passion you have for these ships/crews. The American Mariner’s Capt lives close to me, and as his UPS driver, I’ve had the good fortune of meeting him, and have had several conversations with him about everything that people like us, admire about these iconic ships. I’ll be directing him to this particular documentation. Very well done and thank you. Love streaming these videos on my 70 flat screen.
Thank you, Mike. I'm glad you enjoy them.
Nice work Kevin! Very enjoyable.
Many thanks!
Wow what a fantastic video Kevin. You really put a great deal of effort into making these videos for which we are eternally grateful. You are indeed a lucky man living where you do, but thank you for sharing with us fellow boat nerds living long distance, for me the UK !!
My pleasure!
Wonderful Pictures! I live in Port Huron and Get to see These Beautiful Ships all Summer and Fall, My Grandfather was a Lake Captain Back in the Thirties up to WWII, And My father and Uncles all sailed as Well and Had a Great Uncle on the Canadian Side was a Skipper ...Always enjoy these Pictures etc...You got a New Sub!!Cheers !!
Great Video
Drone shots are a remarkable addition to the palette.
Great video!!
Beautiful pic of the Joseph L. Block on New Year's Eve! Thank you for sharing it
Thank you Lizbeth Teri. Very few photos of mine hang in our home. This is one of those few. I was honored to have it selected by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Great Waterways calendar for 2019-2020.
Thank you so much for sharing these stories. Love the hardware you have too. Please post more!
Thank you, John. My videos about the boats, whether it's freighters or tugs are always the most popular. I will produce more as the opportunities present themselves. Thanks again.
What great work so glad i found this channel im in love with the freighters as well.
Sir, Beautiful pictures!! The camera you were recording video off of was placed for a perfect prespective. The tree, the Ship, the beach, the ice were perfect for a picture.
I'm self taught in photography and I'm not pro but I'm always learn from each picture I take...
Again, very beautiful!
Thank you very much! Every photo opportunity is a learning opportunity for me too. Thanks for your comment!
Very well done . Great storyline from a beautiful part of the country. Thanks for sharing, well worth the effort!
Great video. We watch the Wilfred Sykes in Grand Haven.
She's one of my favorites. Missed her coming in this year for layup though.
@@KODOPhoto She stayed out late this year.
Really beautifully shot. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much AJ!
Great work! I stumbled upon your Badger video, so I checked out a few others. I sailed on the Callaway for 2 months in 2019. I'm currently working on updating my papers to go back out this year and looking forward to it
Welcome aboard!
Awesome video! You need more subscribers (I just subscribed)
Great shots and vids . That photo at 2:50 is really a beautiful picture. I'm glad I found your site. I would love to see this in person. Might be a summer road trip. Thanks Kevin.
Excellent content!
Much appreciated!
Just found your videos and I'm really enjoying them. Question: What's the purpose of the 4-part breakwaters at the east end of the canal? There is a gap in both breakwaters out near the east end.
Not sure. They have been there since the beginning 1880's.
I love your vids, do you by any chance know the name of that bluegrass-sounding song that came on right as soon as the drone footage started? Thanks for what you do!
Hi Casey. Glad you enjoy the videos. The name of that tune is "Ghosts of the Rail" by Gabriel Lewis. I use the soundtrack music service epidemicsound.com. You can probably download it for free on a user trial basis.
Outstanding video Kevin.. I shared on my marine page on Facebook earlier today... I hope it generated some good views for you here and continues to do so!
Thank you, Andrea. Sharing is always helpful. This video has really taken off as a result. It seems a very popular topic. I must do more on the lakers!
@@KODOPhoto Excellent I hope to see more from you... Anytime you do one feel free to find me over on my Facebook page and let me know so I can share there... facebook.com/dredesignsGLMP is how you find me
Kevin, that was OUTSTANDING work man. Loved every second of it. I keep my boat at Harbor Club Marina in season...hope to run in to you one of these days.
Thank you! Sure, I know that marina. Would be nice to run into you sometime.
It appeared that she only had power to the starboard propeller which may be the reason for its unexpected trip to Bay Ship
I’m a new subscriber. Your channel is so awesome. Why don’t you have 100k plus subscribers. Well I’m thankful to have found your channel
Welcome, Whatsit's! Thanks for subscribing. It's a very exclusive club, you know! LOL. Frankly, the reasons I have anemic subscription is of little interest to me. I make these videos for me and whoever will take the time and effort to appreciate my time and effort. So, in a way, it is an exclusive club! It's a creative extension of my photography - which I also do little to promote. But to answer your question contributing factors include: I don't have an Instagram account, I don't have a Twitter account, I don't spend hours on the UA-cam analytics page trying to harvest new subscribers, I don't kowtow to their algorithms, and I don't publish on a regular schedule. I'm not in it for the money or the glory. It's not my ambition or my intent to become a "full-time UA-camr" like so many young turks who strive to make this their career - in lieu of actual work. I'm retired, living very comfortably, and this is a great creative outlet for me. I have been working on a book of essay-accompanying photographs on the Door peninsula for the past 4 1/2 years called "Behind The Door". This channel was intended to support that effort.
Anyway, I really appreciate you taking the time to leave such a kind comment and I hope you tune in on a regular basis and get some enjoyment from it. Thanks! Cheers - KODO
@@KODOPhoto I agree 100%. My whatsit channel has only 100 or so and my other one has 5 subscribers. Maybe less :0). I do it for me. But I’m glad I found yours. We are trying to move to sturgeon bay. I play the bag pipes. Wouldn’t that be a cool video this winter of one of the ships coming in the channel by the lighthouse while I’m playing the pipes?
I guess you didn’t go for the idea of the bagpipes being played. That’s ok. Sorry for bothering you
@@ThePastorPiper no bother a'tall! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I've been really busy filming and editing this week's video. (Just posted.) Playing the pipes is a clever idea. I also play (or played) the pipes, belonged to and marched with the Chicago Highlanders Bagpipe Band. There's also a crew member of the Joseph Block who plays the pipes on deck when sailing into port.
@@KODOPhoto seriously? Wow! I was a member of the city of Tulsa pipes and drums band and played in the honor guard for the Bartlesville Police department. So cool. Well I don’t play much these days but I played the pipes with Willie McCallum. I have had a couple hernia surgeries and now it’s really hard to play, but I can play somethings. Very fun meeting a fellow piper
Do you sell copies of your still shots would really like to purchase one
Paul Justin, yes I do, but not all. If there are some some you have in mind we can discuss. Are you on FB? You can message me there.
Thanks for your interest.
Needless to say, another excellent interpretation of the fleet coming in for the winter’s sleep. This video actually had me in suspense a few times, regarding drone and hoping things went smoothly with no issues. Im thinking that was not an intended suspense, but it added another dimension of feeling to your ever surprising videos! They always touch me in some form and fashion; this one it was the drone for sure, as you improve with the plate spinning, the scope broadens and adds so much information in such a short period of time...all easily understood! 👏🏼👏🏼🥰 Question: Why are these ships named after men, yet called “she”? 🤔 Cant wait to see whats next down the road! 😎
Thank you, Mary! Very kind of you to say. Ships are always referred to as she - nautical tradition dating back centuries. Not sure why but if I had to guess it is a term of endearment from the days of sail - albeit sexist as to how they should be handled. Incidentally, enemy ships are always referred to as "he".
so what do they do at the shipyard with these boats. Is this heavy maintenance season or do they just sit.
Hello Mike. They park them. Some sit, others undergo maintenance. Some get retrofitted with new equipment, i.e. bow thrusters, engines, etc. Some need to have their 5 year USCG inspection. Nearly all get repainted. It's a VERY busy time at the shipyard as there are 10-12 freighters, various tugs, barges and ferries all wanting to be ready to go by the end of March.
Great video and Photos. Are you a fan of the Anderson? In Toledo this year. Another of my favourites is the Ryerson. Though I doubt we will see her out again.
Yes I am! Only saw her once this past season. She seldom sails Lake Michigan but came into Green Bay in September. She sailed right past my front door. I've always been a little partial to the AAA Class lakers of the 1950's-60's. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks. Robert.
@@KODOPhoto I’m asking a lot but one day any chance of a video of the Anderson ?
@@robertronson8666 I'd love to. She's on my wish list too!
@@KODOPhoto Thankyou so much.
At 8:06 sounds like Joseph had a Taco Bell burrito for breakfast.
Do you sell your prints?
Yes, Ivory. Some. Many in these videos are not yet as they are intended for a book I'm working on. You can find others at kodophoto.smugmug.com
