I rushed home down in LA to watch the game, and I thought Al Michaels did a great job describing the situation...he didn't know how bad it was, of course, outside the stadium, yet. It got real sad real fast.
I remember this, I was 7 years old living in the bay. Dad a huge baseball fan had the game on, I almost got crushed by a dresser. Power was out and aftershocks all night I spent the night under the kitchen table with my sisters so the roof wouldn't collapse from a huge aftershock that the radio said was possible. I remember my dad mostly being pissed about the world series being canceled and he rushed home from work to watch it. Crazy memories from this video. My family never saw this footage because of power being out
I remember it like it was yesterday! Here I am in front of my TV, eagerly awaiting the game, then rumble-rumble-rumble and all of a sudden all the video tapes and books on my shelves are flying off and hitting me in the head, electricity and phones go down, and seconds later police and fire vehicle sirens screaming. Unforgetable!
I was driving on San Pablo Ave heading home from Oakland. I was in college in 89 and this hit and I went from one lane to another thinking something went wrong with my car. I moved to Phoenix,Az in 95 and never looked back.
I was in Chicago and luckily, not in San Francisco, at the time the quake hit. It was the first time I witnessed a earthquake on TV during a Major League Baseball World Series game. I know that California had experienced a lot of quakes in its years and I expected that, but not as large as what I saw....
It's unfair to compare Joe Buck and Al Michaels in one of those what ifs. Al Michaels was lucky be alive. He could have fallen out of the booth. Joe Buck's father Jack Buck was in the radio booth next door. The best of the sports media was at Candlestick Park that night. If the structure failed, we could be talking a different story.
I'm always amazed to see historic clips from 1989. I was born 2 months (12-28-89) after this earthquake hit the bay area. I'm just amazed by the footage. Time and history have always fascinated me for some reason. And these clips are not different.
Actually, at the stadium, immediately after the first 15 second quake, it was announced for those people in the upper stands to evacuate via the ramps to the parking lot and those on the lower stands to come onto the field. Fortunately 2 local teams had made the World Series (San Francisco & Oakland), so the California fans there had experience with earthquakes and reacted more calmly. After a while, national TV anchors thankfully gave over to local reporters who knew the situation and the cities to give more accurate and useful info. For example, national reported the Golden Gate bridge (sic) had collapsed instead of the Bay Bridge, delaying the evacuation of non-San Franciscans.
what the fuck does that mean. palm reading wasnt big in the 80s dude maybe in the freaking middle ages when witches and people got burnt at the stake. dumb comment
I was watching this on TV and listening to the new Kiss CD "Hot In The Shade", which had just been released that same day; in fact, I'd just gotten home and put the CD on and then the earthquake happened...thank God no one was hurt or killed there! During the quake, when the game returned with audio only, you could hear the shock and nervousness in Al Michaels' voice, and rightly so; that had to be really scary!
i'm only here because abc 7 news mistakenly showed the footage of the 1989 earthquake because a earthquake happened today and also that earthquake back then was scary and terrible as hell
this is coming from a giants, but i happen to love the smart ass attitude in baseball players. its a lot more interesting than modern interviews with player where they repeat the same thing over and over again. "you know, we gotta take it one game at a time, you know, and keep our proper fundamentals and work as a team." That shit pisses me off more than cocky players
I use to live in northern California in 1989 i was 11 years old .im still a big oakland fan..i remember that day .lights out candlestick park.jose c. mark McGwire. I use to love those guys .ill never forget 1989 world series...now i live in Arizona. Go d backs..Arizona won rhe 2001 world series. I was in phz az at that time also...
Al Micheals was a bit mistaken initially in saying they should have immediately evacuated the stadium. it was actually smarter to keep everyone inside while officials figured out the best way to clear people out. I don't mean simply clearing them out of the stadium, but how to go about getting people out of the area to go home or wherever they were staying. with a major road out of service and mass transit halted the options would be very limited. at the very least, waiting allowed officials to get into position to get people to where needed.
I remember being at home in the #BayArea when this hit. Everything was shaking so violently. No phones or water for 3 days and no power for 5. We had massive damage at the house. I'll never forget this EQ. Scariest quake ever.
I wasn't alive yet when Al Michaels was reporting about the earthquake that he was supposed to be play-by-play of the 1989 World Series, but it is jarring to hear him in the role of a CBS News Reporter for a spectacle bigger than he expects. Regardless, this is the thing to defy his broadcasting career even though he was supposed to be broadcasting the World Series.
considering Al Michaels is NOT a journalist or reporter, and is mostly known as a sports commentator, aside from the Olympics, I thought he did a pretty damn good job. Koppel ALWAYS leaves something to be desired, though.
haha, I am sorry to laugh but I really admire your words to describe the techonological gap between 80's and the present. hahaha, you can imagine how I laughed hahaha
GlamorousPauliexSpartanRemixer IDK. I wasn't alive that time so I'm guessing that it was shaking the camera so they won't be able to record the game or because it made the connection really bad.
Speed Demon is partially correct. The earthquake stopped the broadcast because the electricity went out. The audio you hear after the quake is from a phoneline. I believe the video you see from the field after the quake is from mobile unit cameras with their own power supply. It took time to restore power so they postponed the game. Also Candlestick Park was a very old stadium and they wanted to inspect how much damage it had sustained in the quake. If it had been very badly damaged they'd have probably just had the game somewhere else.
At 2:31 Oakland A's player Mark McGwire looks terrified by what is going on---funny I thought someone who was a chronic "juicer" like McGwire was would be more prone to fits of anger instead of being afraid?

In the words of Grandpa Simpson--"It was the style at the time". Really, it was. People actually dressed like that back then, and they did it on purpose.

Mr. Al Michaels won a Emmy Award for this!

Love the mullets.
Could you imagine if it was Joe Buck instead of Al Michaels? Just shows how good Al Michaels is.
I think that Joe Buck would do okay. But he can't compare to Al Michaels.

CzarJuliusIII You were born on the day when Newcastle in Australia was hit by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake which caused 14 fatalities!
But it was australia so no one cared.
I was Born in September that year a month before this happened

Odd to see no one looking at their palm. People are actually looking at each other.
what the fuck does that mean. palm reading wasnt big in the 80s dude maybe in the freaking middle ages when witches and people got burnt at the stake. dumb comment
Go be a troll somewhere else. You clearly did not understand what the fuck is he saying.

At least they had the Good Year Blimp!

renton9999 exactly, I heard officials believed because there were so many in the stadium, about 50,000 people's lives were saved that day.
when i started to drive in 1988 gas was around 60 cents a gallon.
In 2022 dollars that is $1.50 by the way.
I was watching this game back then a saw it live.....truly incredible footage
Look at that... not a single cell phone in any hand. Ahh, those were the good old days.
Man, Koppel had some weird hair.
I remember being at home in the #BayArea when this hit. Everything was shaking so violently. No phones or water for 3 days and no power for 5. We had massive damage at the house. I'll never forget this EQ. Scariest quake ever.
Will there be a sequel...A's - Giants, 2012?

All the power in SF was out for a few days. Nobody was watching TV.
Other then the earthquake back then gas prices were cheap !
Jose's wife/gf waving and smiling at the camera 🤦♂️
What a coincidence! The best decade was close to ending and this happened. Wow
+Speed Demon Does UA-cam, why did the earthquake stop the world series?
GlamorousPauliexSpartanRemixer IDK. I wasn't alive that time so I'm guessing that it was shaking the camera so they won't be able to record the game or because it made the connection really bad.

Best Decade indeed! I was 19 when this EQ hit. I saw it on Tv, was watching the world series.
Fallen Anjel what did you do when the earthquake started?
1989 when a mullet was fashionable @2:15
the phone lines are down, phone rings as soon as he says that
Ted Koppel wasn't in San Francisco..
+Kyle Davidson nor was man on the moon.
Thought the exact same thing. Couldn't be better timed for a live example of irony.
The phone lines are down, no one has invented the Internet yet, cell phones are the size of a small dog, we have issues.
I remember that game clearly. It seems like only yesterday.
Whole lot of mullets back then
Fun Fact....This Earthquake happened only a few short years after Back To The Future came out.
7Earthsky The sequel came out the year this happened.
At 2:31 Oakland A's player Mark McGwire looks terrified by what is going on---funny I thought someone who was a chronic "juicer" like McGwire was would be more prone to fits of anger instead of being afraid?
the anger was used to hide the fear.
I wonder if Mark McGuire is still married?
Yes. But not to her. They divorced the next year...
Play ball.

Why does his voice sound like Howard stern??
Maybe because he's Jewish just like the other one.
Marc McGuire before roids.!
Actually he was just getting started.
TheKayaklover the earthquake convinced him that he needed to start
That's when the Giants made a deal with the devil.
God is a Giants Fan all Dodgers are going to hell,or LA
The wives of the baseball players have really bad fashion!!!
In the words of Grandpa Simpson--"It was the style at the time".
Really, it was. People actually dressed like that back then, and they did it on purpose.
susan smith and hair, so bad, so, so bad.
it was the 1980's, please look away, i'm hideous.
As opposed to the bad fashion of today?
Far FAR better than how they dress now!
Take a good look at that crowd of people -- mostly White ,thin and wearing regular clothes.
Obesity was not the norm during 1989...
