Hi all, I have verified that this vice and it seems most vices do not come with hardware so my vice came from Harbor Freight as it should have. Thanks to the many of you who commented below with this information....
Nice vise at a great price! From what I saw in the manual, the bolts are sold separately. But you’re right that if HF did supply the bolts you’d probably get better getting your own. Thanks for the vid.

Just installed a vise on my newly built workbench that’s around the size of you bench. I got a Youst 9” face vise off of Amazon. Had trouble getting the screw and guide rod hols aligned but all is now well. Did learn one important lesson. You cannot make a vise handle from a 2x4. 😊 Recently discovered Harbor Freight. Bought a pair of beam clamps for $12.00 each, they work great!
I normally do not splurge on real high end stuff but I do give myself a gift every year and lately it has been from Woodpeckers. I do think layout is important and I really do enjoy using those tools.... Thanks for watching...
I can recommend SYP with a maple top. I used oversize pieces for the base and timberframe style joints, and it's been shipped overseas and back without any damage.

I just purchased this today. While shopping at Harbor Freight a HFT test came up and I didn’t look at it until I got home. Man, I missed out on the discount. I’m thinking about making it portable so that I can place it on any workbench. Hopefully I’ll figure out my concept soon.

Nice video but a question…It would seem the Vice is substantial overkill of that little bench top. I will also suggest that your wooden Vice jaws are thick enough that they are limiting the thickness of material you can put between the jaws. Okay near the end of the video you explain the temporary nature of this setup.
Yes it is temporary and not the best. I would have only used one [iece of Cherry if I knew at the time I was going to use the oak for the cavity. Given that yes the front part is to thick. Thanks for watching and the comments....
Certain things aren't bad. Larger tools like drill press, bandsaw, planers, *dust collectors are a huge waste if you need them to be precise. *- The newer dust collection systems are horrible. They changed the motors on the small and large units, and they overheat really quickly. I usually would by the small one when on sale and dedicate it to 1 or 2 machines. That way, I could incorporate my tools into being self sufficient, and connect to my outflow system that launched my sawdust through the wall, and outside to different areas. And the newer motors are getting up to 175f (in 2 to 5 minutes) right out of the box. The larger units are doing the same and get even hotter. My old units get to around 135f when they work hard for 10+ minutes. So something they did with new motors has doomed them.
👍🐯👍 thanks for sharing the info on the vise from HF. Any plans for the use of the old vise? I did the same but used my little Irwin for a end vise. It held like you said here, slipping when I needed it to hold still, but as a end vise it worked well when holding pieces on the top for planing the face sides of boards. Yes, I might use it as an end vice right now no room under the top because of the way I have it attached to the Kreg bench it is sitting on. Thanks for watching....
Thanks for the video. I didn’t understand why you made the cavity. My thought was to just add two boards, one on each side to protect the project. But it seems you did it for mounting reasons. I’m curious why that was necessary. Thank you.
Hi Shayne, I use this vise for hand tool work to include saw use. I wanted to cover the cast iron so the saw never could hit it. I started with the router and switched to the oak because my router bit was shot and it wasn't going to get the job done. Thanks for watching...

@@shaynesabala Oh I see what you mean now. Well there is a few reasons for that. one, for me when sawing it is the part of the vice I buried that I would normally nick with my saw if not careful. The back end is normally safe (unless I get really sloppy). And to be honest with you this is a temporary setup until I get the real vice made and just didn't see the need to do that back side. Someone here posted a comment below that Paul Sellers does not recommend what I did. I did not find his video yet but I generally agree with what Paul has to say so I will look into that for sure. If it sways my decision I will mount the vice differently in my bench build this winter. So I guess stay tuned and we will see igf I change things up... Thanks for the comments.....
I have my Great-Grandfather's 10" Record brand (like a Wilton) woodworking vise with cast steel front plate and rear plate. It's over 140 years-old and weighs about 100 pounds (14" deep throat), so it has spoiled me. For the MONEY, the Doyle looks pretty darn good. A NEW 250mm (close to 10") from a woodworking supply is over $300, and I wouldn't buy it because it's missing some features (it's not drilled and tapped for sacrificial wood faces), so we're playing in the $500 range (GASP!). If Grandpa hadn't given it to me, I certainly wouldn't have bought it-it's more vise than I've ever needed.
The Doyle is a good vise but it is not in the league with the Record you have. Since it was your Grandfathers keep it forever :). I have my Grandfathers Stanley No. 5 and I love it and will use it forever..Thanks for watching....
I have a few pair of Doyle slip joint pliers (channel locks) I can't find anything wrong with them, good sharp jaws to grip the pipe, good heavy steel. CHEAPER than the competition! I'll have to give their vice a try!
thanks for watching. For the most part the Doyle brand is a good one at HF. I like the vice and have no complaints with it. I did a video on the slip joint plyers they make 3 or 4 years ago now. I really like them....
Hi Victor, I believe they were 2 1/2 inches ling and 5/16th thick.... They were standard bolts at the Home Depot in the individual section where I just bought the 4 of them...Thanks for watching....
@JLD Woodworking ahhh nice. So, after a month, how is the quick release on it holding up? I've seen a lot of the lower priced vises like this, like Yost, the quick release tends to break.

bought one yesterday...had coupon...doyle and vices not listed as excluded items but they refused to honor the coupon. I'm contacting corporate to see why. i'm install with through bolts based on past experiences of lag screws eventually loosening. it comes with no mounting info or hardware.
That sucks I got mine with a coupon so that must be a mistake at the store. Yes, lag bolts can loosen and I do tighten them occasionally (have not had to on this one yet)... From what I have learned since doing this video is that most vices do not come with hardware. I guess there are just to many variables in what they are being mounted to. I believe mine did come with a one page basically worthless instruction sheet that I didn't use....Thanks for watching....
Yes, the next time when I build the final bench version I will use much less on the side towards the bench. The maple I used on the other side seems about right.... Thanks for watching....

I like that you have some of the most expensive layout tools that are sold, but the rest of your tools are the most reasonable that can be bought.

I have two Yost vises (face and tail vise) on my bench, and neither came with mounting hardware.

I dont know of a drawing but it is fairly small. seven inches wide and under 12 inches long.... Hope that helps.... Thanks for watching....
What I mean is is under 12 inched under the bench. it is 15 3/4 in total length....

So, with all the extra wood you added the effect opening is very much reduced

Yes, Crubber is a much better bet, put it only on one of the two surfaces, not both!

@@davidlynch7666 Crubber is really grippy but if you have two layers, smaller parts tend to move in the vise.

A hard maple top has some undesireable traits. I can't remember who made the vid, but he went with SYP all over.

Your vise is too low! It should be flush with the tabletop so you can use that screwed notched feature to sandwich work pieces against a bench dog.
