Phenomenal story not only about the 1931 electric vehicle restoration but about the right people coming together to do the work in 90 days. Amazing. Congratulations to all involved. The car looks amazing inside and out!!

It took 4 years for me to have this pop up as a youtube selection geared to my interests. Totally amazing video and such talented individuals who gave this car new life. Beautiful, simply beautiful.

If there was any other car available in 1931 with a mother in law stool and tiller steering, I'd be shocked. The Detroit Electric truly was the last of the horseless carriages.
The care and compassion & dedication of the restoration crew was invaluable.
Thank you for watching and commenting on this video. I just finished another documentary on a 1928 white truck restoration. I think you’ll find it. Very interesting, thanks again.
Awesome video... A shout out to Nicola Tesla that invented the technology that makes electric cars possible.
Nice today see that kind of dedication…the youngster ‘Tyler’ proofed the future for this kind of stuff is still moving forward ❤️💪👍
Forgot to mention kudos to Tyler! I think that’s what made me tear up a little. Todays youth just don’t take interest in things like this as a whole. Yes there are some car guys that have young kids and get them involved, but it’s not the majority. It’s refreshing and it gives me hope to see a young person get involved in a project like this. I’m 56 and I bought my first car at 15. I fixed it up in my parents driveway and when I turned 17 I had a beautiful dependable car that I spent 2 years making happen! It was a 73 Olds 88 and I remember riding my 10 speed to the College point junk yards and one at a time I got power window regulators and brought them back home. At that age I figured out what would work. I got front regulators from a 70s coupe DeVille and the rears came from a 70s Toronado though rollers were smaller diameter. I had a window shop press on correct ones. I then made my own wiring harness and got all four working from the master switch that I had obtained from a 74 Caprice wagon. Good old days and fond memories.
You said it - parents' driveway. First get the kids a driveway. Don't underestimate how many young people are in a housing situation in which they don't even have street parking, let alone a driveway and a garage. And for those who already have their own house - wages haven't kept up with the cost of housing and living at all - meaning an expensive hobby like vintage cars is just completely out of the question.
It's the sad truth of today's world. Shit gets expensive real fast, and vintage car restauration will always be an expensive endeavour.
I have two bikes (24 and 30 years old) i'm maintaining myself. I can sorta do that on the street, but it's not exactly fun. Not too expensive though.
You’re SO right about everything you said! I bought my house (first and only house I’ve owned) in 2004 here in Queens NY. Things weren’t cheap even then and the only reason o could barely afford it is because it was in an “up and coming “ area. Read that as was blighted and kinda ghetto but I took a chance. It’s very nice now and I never had any incidents here. My home is now worth about 80% more then I paid. What it’s currently worth I could NOT afford. That I can honestly admit. Safe riding bro!! I also ride but an Ebike. It’s awesome I feel like a kid again on it. It goes max 25-27 when fully charged. This summer I put on 1300+ miles !!
Our museum has an operating 1916 Detroit Electric, which is driven about our grounds for special events. The public is unaware of the popularity of electric cars in the early twentieth century. One of the most interesting aspects of the car is how quiet she runs. Congratulations on this restoration.
Thank you for your comment and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully I can do more documentaries like this in the future…
Check out this one, ua-cam.com/video/wrYbZ8_Ri_U/v-deo.html
That is a cool car.
Absolutely wonderful....second time I have posted and liked it as much again. A gem and a history to go with it.
Love it. Needs vanity plate. "Early Adopter"

Lovely auto. Your pin stripper reminded me off Kenneth Robert Howard (September 7, 1929-September 19, 1992), also known as Von Dutch, in the approach taken. and as you alluded to the Electric car predates many petrol types. in New York city for decades, only electric cars (like the Baker) and Taxi were allowed on city streets because of horses. There were two electric recharge stations in the city which could remove and replace the battery pack of a taxi in under 3-minutes on average.
If you enjoyed this one, please check out this latest documentary on this electric car…

Now if we can only get Jay Leno to finish his Detroit Electric! Resto-Mod!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Leno keeps his hands full
I believe jay has aan antique electric in his collection.
Its a baker electric
Thank you for sharing your story and bringing the car back to life.
Thank you for watching my video. If you could share this video that would help me out a lot. By the way, check out my other video about the restoration of a 1928 white truck. I think you’ll find that one very interesting as well.

The dude hand stripping, a true talent. I have seen experts in this field and they are mesmerizing to watch
Their accuracy to the finest detail is incredible.
When I was a young boy there was a dude in my home town doing this fantastic work. He drank like a fish out of water, but had the steadiest hands and position hold I've seen right to this day. I had the privilege of watching him strip a car. Full length body strips straight as an arrow. I have seen them at Rolls Royce's factory on the tv, but none looked any better than Mr Cheer. This car is amazing, and those wheels, perfect.
I’m glad you liked the documentary. Check out this other documentary I did for the same gentleman that owned this one Mr. Lilley. The pin striper only has one arm.

That is an amazing job! Well done for finding it, and then seeing its special status and potential. And well done to the team who put it back together so beautifully. 🙂👍
Wishing you many years of happy driving.
I'm glad you like this video please like and share if you could that would help me out here is a new documentary that I just finished a couple years ago on another Detroit electric, enjoy…

Extremely well done, both the content and the videography! It was interesting to see that the tail lights looked identical to those on my 1931 Model A Ford :)
It's obvious they had to buy from Ford to install in the restored vehicle to meet barely minimum safety standards!
Sorry, it's taken me this long to reply. You might be interested in my other videos that I just finished. Here is a 1928 white truck restoration. Enjoy…

Gorgeous. The only electric car I'd consider buying 😀💝
Very cool video. This is crazy I ran across this video. I volunteer at the Wheels O' Time Museum in Peoria, Il. Small world. I walk by the car and don't think anything of it. Great info video.

Fast car- the offical world speed record whit a car was with electric car in 1898 . l-l ovely charm work from all of you.
Thank you for your comment, I'm glad you liked the video. Check out my other automobile videos that I've produced. Thanks again…
Amazing guys, from the owner to the restorer (and his team) to the videographer. They were "a team" in every sense of the world. I'd love to see this car on Jay Leno's garage sometime. I know Jay would pay due respect to the car and all of those involved. Respect! ✊
If you liked this video, please check this one. I just finished a couple months ago, enjoy.!!
ua-cam.com/video/jfsNr43sLo4/v-deo.html
the front bonnet on this is so unique. actually seems like it could have been a porsche predecessor
This reminds me of Jay Leno's "Baker Electric" automobile. This example is such a high quality job, done in a short period of time ... and unlike Jay, it was done with a reasonable budget.
And with genuine humility
Jay's was fully stripped down and reframed though.....
Fantastic work, and a great story well told!!! Awesome Car!!!!
thank you...

Excellent work, really enjoyed it. Lillie is quite the taskmaster.
If I had seen that car in 1935 I would have thought its been well looked after.

I must say science really excelled on the electric car 1830-2020 ⛽️💸
1930*
*1880.
@@EmyrDerfel *1832 robert anderson, scotland. first known electric "car"... just like the first ICE powered car was 1860... etienne lenoir, paris.
oh. you thought it was benz huh?
i doubt you know of siegfried markus either... thats 1880 ;)
The expertise and fearless dedication of that crew was a wonder to behold. Likewise, this brilliant presentation was flawlessly produced. Makes it hard to believe there are so few subscribers (I sub'd).
I really appreciate your comment and I agree with you 100%. I myself thought this would attract more viewers and subscriptions. It's a shame that it hasn't.
Check out this restoration of this old truck. I think you will enjoy it…
ua-cam.com/video/jfsNr43sLo4/v-deo.html
Great video! Really enjoy the restoration of beautiful old cars. One day, I'm going to get one.
So cool. I couldn't believe 1/3 of cars back in early 1900s were electric. Baker sold 15000 units as per Jay Leno.
Got remember the competition was the horse...
He said a third of cars, so horses aren't included in that. It was 40% steam, 38% EV, 22% ICE around 1900.
Electric is good for urban use...not so much out in the country...horses and the other power plants owned the rural areas.
Down Under I have seen Detroit and Baker electric vehicles at auto museums and clubs. On the Gold Coast (south of Brisbane, in Queensland) There used to be Gilltrap's Auto Museum and there was a Detroit inside but there was a very long lorry by Baker Electric covered by a lattice work of steel I think but no tray etc. It was wanting of a major restoration but the bed on it would have been over 20' long. There was the Stanley steamer (about 1928 four door with leather roof that could fold down like a Model A Ford. There was a Foden steam truck as well in good working order. This baby-boomer was most impressed at the time and still am. So much history and skills lost to us. Loved the video and what I could see in the eyes of all involved. Wonderful. Cheers, Brian
Hey, thanks for looking at the video. Share it with your friends, hopefully we can bring more videos like this to you.
guy down the road from here has... 4 sentinels, a steam shovel, a matching pair of triple expansions, a... think its a white...
whole workshop is running off the lil traction engine out back...
theres a doble in ryde... secret location ;) one hell of a machine to drive...
That was great. Thanks for letting us in on this one. 👍👊
Really enjoyed seeing the car a the Saybrook point ev show 9/21/19
Excellent work, people!

Excellent work.
The modern batteries are an interesting choice, since they are so obviously different from either the the original or the 1931 update. The original style are, of course, not available.
Hey Brian, check out this other old electric car documentary. I just finished a while ago.

THis car is amazing, thanks for sharing!
Who needs a Tesla if one can have one of these! Bring 'em back!!! Just imagine these with solid state batteries as an option for a city car.
I have always loved Electric Cars and knew they were going to be the future and stay I own a Tesla Model 3 absolutely love that I'm living driving my dream car..🔥⚡😎
How much does the Tesla go for now a days, if I may ask?
Hope it never fails you when you need it most.
models from 1931 to 1936 were made with stock spare parts from the old factory, and many according to my research, were repurchased, and refurbished at the factory with these same parts until 1936 when Detroit Electric went out of business and was dissolved.
Awesome job guys!!! These cars have a simplistic charm that cannot be duplicated ever again. It turned out wonderful and is a real piece of American automotive history. Your passion and sweat literally gave me tears of joy !!! Great video and car. Where on East Coast are you? I’m in Queens NY and go to many shows. That would fit in perfectly at the Old Westbury car show that takes place usually first Sunday in June.
If you go to this site, the owner, Bill Lilliy will fill you in on all the information that you need, thanks for watching

Love the Mystic Seaport footage: I'm not sure whether I had a ride in this one, or in the 1922...
Interesting, I didn't know they were still doing electric cars that late. What is/was the range? Did you put lead acid batteries in it or upgrade to some lithium variant?
ua-cam.com/video/wrYbZ8_Ri_U/v-deo.html
Thanks Paul..yes, this s a fine piece of great video of yours. Hope you keep making this videos for a hundred years, good things last for a. long time, and your masterpieces deserve it ... just imagine a guy like me in South East Asia or sSouth America, enjoying this, he he! Thanks again!
You guys dis a great job with that car! Well done, and thanks for telling us about it. 🙂👍
It's very interesting. Honestly I couldn't care less about auto-related anything in general really, except for electric cars of all kinds.....which I'm unhealthily obsessed with. There is some sort of ineffable mystique about machines made for the conversion of chemical potential energy into kinetic energy to transport people; I really don't know what exactly it is that makes them so bewitching.
Amazing what you guys achieved! It´s a beauty!
Take a look at another beauty that I shot and edited for the same owner…

Many Rural areas of the USA didn't have Electric until the 1940's Electric is for Urban areas..
Did this nice car had a power generator?
Ride comfort and aerodynamics of this car must have been quite good for its time...
Fascinating!😍
Very cool! Nice job.
If you get a chance, check out another old electric car doc I just finished, enjoy…

Try to squeeze the driving part thats important
ua-cam.com/video/wrYbZ8_Ri_U/v-deo.html
Amazing vehicle. Terrific informative video. Thank you.
Now a days an electric car like that would have a fiberglass or metal body.
ua-cam.com/video/wrYbZ8_Ri_U/v-deo.html
Nice restoration but TWENTY MINUTES waiting for the finalé AND AT THE PUTTING-IT-IN-GEAR CLIMAX, NO VIDEO FROM INSIDE THE CAR AS IT'S MOVING (let alone only about 10 measly seconds from the REAR as it starts moving AWAY from the camera)?!?
Here, check this one out see if it's any better,…
ua-cam.com/video/jfsNr43sLo4/v-deo.html
Think about it, if one could be made inexpensively, one half the current price, one of these that could go 35-40 mph and 100 miles, it could be a family's second around town car.
It definitely looks more like a model t.the tall phone booth look it used to have was kind of ungainly looking. Now a restomod with modern motors and lithium batteries would make a sleeper performance fun car out of it
Detroit Electric Model 98A
So much fun.. I would dress up

Thank you for this video loved it :)
Every time I am confronted again with the sad realisation that the world is such a polluted place just because the oil barons lobbied everybody into internal combustion engines, I could cry.
Well, don't cry yet before you look at this new documentary about another electric car…
ua-cam.com/video/wrYbZ8_Ri_U/v-deo.html
Cool, I want it.
Someone please make me a copy.
😀 I'm glad you liked it…
Anyone looking for a very unique one-of-a-kind car?
I know where there is a 1957 Teebird that was ..”the prototype”.. built by Ford engineers in combination with Chrysler engineers... who shoehorned the biggest Chrysler 1957 engine and transmission... into a Teebird .. this car is very low miles and kept in a garage..& the title does not even have numbers on it it is a one of a kind car and ... is for sale!.. contact me -and I’ll let you know where it is...
great work, but i hate these kind of artificial deadlines. damn the show, just do it right without killing yourselves
Well, see what you think about this one this is another electric car by the same owner…
ua-cam.com/video/wrYbZ8_Ri_U/v-deo.html
I think this car might need to be put back into production.
but, but,but...... The Egomaniac and self proclaimed smartest man alive. Elon Musk, says he invented the electric car.
Wow
What a great restoration. I have to pass on my best congratulations to the shop owner and his employees. I have been around Automotive shops all my life and I am very impressed with the workman ship and attitude of all who worked on the project ! The owner must be very proud to have such a rare car.
That's great, I'm glad you liked it. If you could share this video that would help me out a lot so I can make more videos like this…

Now china is gonna make the best American Electric cars
Original model t’s... had a place in the motors for neodymium magnets... which made the motor..( never stop running)
The motors actually had to have a Drive shaft-break ..to stall them!
Because-the push and pull ...”the attraction and repulsion of the magnets”... would be able to make it run ..in- definitely
False. There is no "in-definite" engine in existence, nor will there ever be.
ahhh, yes... because we had neodymium when ford made the model T... even if it wasnt isolated until much later, and the alnico magnet only came into existence around 1930 iirc... or the ferrite magnet, around the 50s iirc... the neodymium magnet being a product of the 80s, maybe even the 90s... thats 1990, mind you.
despite that, ford decided it was a great idea to design in a feature using an item that wouldnt exist for almost another century.
what was your end goal in writing this comment? to let people know you are stupid? that you either believe in fairy tales, or are extremely gullible? consume a diet of psuedo science and fantasy?
do yourself a favour. get some basic education about magnetics.
1830-2020 electric car science ⛽️💸
1930*
@@jch8175 *1830. robert anderson, scotland.
do some research.
This needs a Tesla battery and motor swap! 😁😁😁
the battery is Too heavy and the motor would destroy the wheels and bend the chassis
You can show first car in the world witch unlimited energie, making to Nicola Tesla, in 20 years, please? Thanks.
I'm sorry, I'm not following what you are asking…
I.n.c.r.e.d.i.b.l.e.
The design looks very dated because it is. The design dates from around 1915 and was produced from 1918 until the 1930’s.
Even if they upgrade to Tesla technology including their motors and batteries is something different for this.
So how can you judge if you never seen one.
It has to be 100 years old or older to be classed as an antique.
A vintage car is one that was manufactured between 1919 and 1930. An antique car is any car manufactured in 1975 or earlier (older than 45 years old). The classic car is a vehicle manufactured in the 1990s or earlier (at least 20 years old).
