tip to people who want to use merc. he is my fave so i know a lot about him. he is an op offensive. give him a little bit of health and always come with a mage or a hunter. giving him a lot of strenth and speed is such a deadly combo. he is a tower killer. if you use great sprint and maximum velocity, you will have the ultimate tower/player killer (especially mages and hunter because you can run around their attacks) his main flaw is against a guardian with a lot of health because it takes too long to kill them and that may cause you a life unlike other class you can kill them with perfect combo. i got more if you want (sorry for the bad english)

Mercury's Greek name is Hermes, who is brother to Apollo. Since in Smite Apollo uses his Greek name they've kept it for this reveal.
They are using mythology to the fullest, not just the obvious parts, but they need a consistent label to not confuse those fans less knowledgable about the true legends and myths.
I appreciate your thoughts, but remember that the majority of fans won't know the difference.

Some Roman Gods actually had their Greek names, sometimes with alternate spelling. Like Heracles (Greek) and Hercules (Roman/Modern Western Societies).

Technically, the Romans did have their own gods, but when they found the Greek gods, they immediately noticed the obvious similarities and just went ahead and combined their pantheons, taking most of the Greek stories, added their own, and using their own names. Both the Greek and Roman gods were born from older Indo-European myths.
I disslike the fact that Smite uses some "Roman version" instead of the "Greek version" of the gods as the Romans "took" the greek gods and renamed them.
But at least they made the best of it by making Mercury instead of Hermes as Hermes would have been hard to potrait in Smite.
Eh they atleast have their own originalities and story rather than just renaming them with same aspects. There are also gods not taken from greeks.

They're generally also worshipped completely differently - and both cultures worshipped different parts of the god as the main focus as well. For example - Romans worshipped the defensive and medicine aspects of Minerva, while Greeks more often worshipped the fact she was patron of heroes, homecraft, etc. Defensive war was really the only big similarity.
How do they decide whether to use Roman or Greek name? I mean they could have called him Hermes or Zeus to Jupiter.

Brian Sanders Misunderstanding, commerce = robbery.Not that in Ancient Greece it was equal but he is god of both, in a meaning of you must be agile and quick-minded for both as that what he possessed.
Loki, on the other hand is trickster. He doesnt have any god related duties, he is just causing mischief as he was the one in fact sending Tyr to put his hand into Fenrir's mouth.

They turned the old Sun Wukong model into Hun Batz because the model, quotes and kit didn't fit the character's actual lore, it was decided to give Sun Wukong a complete remake.
But since many people liked the kit of the old Wukong they just gave it to Hun Batz with a visual rework and changed names(aside from the passive which got completely changed) to keep it in the game.
The new Sun Wukong is rumored to come out in 3 weeks.You can see his new model at the end of the New Chinese Gods video.

Best Mercury combo: Use 4, turn around and use 3, throw the enemy and use 1 under him, use 2 and finish him
For me I use 3 either turn them to a wall or towards my teammates,2 and just melee them to death....I can solo 3 on 1 with life steal and a heal
Add something like character bonuses, like something happens if you have Artemis and Apollo or Zeus. It'd be a fun factor.
I like to use Mercury's ult to backdoor the enemy titan or a tower.

Helios is called Sol in roman myths. He is the sun itself, while Apollo is the god of sun, music and predictions, and Apollo is called Apollo in both greek and roman myths :)

There are legitimate Roman gods in Smite. Everything isn't Greek. There are both. There are differences between the two, however minor. The people at HiRez know what they're doing. So let them do it. Also, Mercury is not listed as Greek in the game. He is Roman.
The reference can still be drawn, despite the less than canny resemblance. Still proves a point, doesn't it? There are ways around copyrights. Though I will admit, I was not aware there was a metal dubbed Quicksilver. The more you know.

Greece gods are based of the Mesopotamian gods found in different forms in ancient Babylon, Egypt and (possibly) Persia etc.

- Guan Yu = was deified after death (quite a few of the Gods within Chinese mythology were mortals before becoming Gods);
- Hercules = (from what I understood) became a full God after death (he was a demigod before);
- Fenrir = has the exact same parents as Hel, but I can see why he wouldn't really be considered a God.
- Arachne = well, I fully agree on this one.
Personally I think it would be cool if they added a "demon pantheon" for mythological beasts/opponents of the Gods/monsters/etc.

Hercules does earn his place in the pantheon in the end of his story, especially on the Roman version(which is the in-game version). I also can't expand on Bakasura, because hinduism is kinda f-ed up in complexity, but in short he was in a family of creatures that battled against their "gods" very oftenly. Same goes for Ymir, who required a total of 3 norse gods to be brought down in his mythology. They were not gods, but they certainly could kill a god.
Jesus these videos are poorly voices over. The script is just generic sentences that someone reads off a page with no depth behind it, then someone takes everything she says and splices it all together with no flow what so ever.

Some, of the gods of the Roman pantheon do have a Greek origin, but the Religio Romana is not simply a cheap knock off of the Hellenic faith.
Roman and Greek paganism have different forms of worship, different philosophies, and different aspects to the gods. Heck, there are even gods found in Religio Romana that are not found in Hellenic paganism.
There are people who still follow these old religion and they do not worship the same gods or in the same way. As a follower of Religio Romana, the Greek gods are as different to me as the gods of Norse paganism.

We need a visual upgrade for Mercury, he's iconic and is very important in Greek mythology, having to do with many aspects of communication and commerce. I would like to see him keep his outfit as it is, just give him a better face and body, he's jacked for a speedster and that's part of his presence. He's not wiry and slender, he's strong, fast, and highly intelligent.

Next god is a ranged AD, or "hunter," named Ah-Mucen-Cab, the Mayan Bee god. Should be in about 2 weeks. Next week is the reworked Hel, and 3 weeks from now is the reintroduced Sun Wukong.

In roman he is referenced as Phoebus Apollo but in the Greek pantheon its just Apollo. Its essentially the same name just shortened up.

In that one you're actually right. People before the greek civilization and the roman civilization started to develop, were already talking about legends such as entities from the sky, the sun, earth, etc. But weren't exactly represented as gods yet, they were more like deities? you're right. and the myth that's in the lore is from Greek. But the romans adopted Apollo (sometimes called him Phoebus). They should have just made him Hermes, but maybe they want some more diversity so they went Greek. Maybe Mercury more well know than Hermes.

Few things. Sun Wukong is basically Goku, and Goku is based off him. I don't really like the show, but the abridged version made me love Goku...so I will be playing the new Wukong like I do with Mercury. Hel needs a golden skin since she only has one (technically one since barely anyone has Jingle Hel). And Medusa or Venus should be added next. Venus as a support mage, and Medusa maybe as a bruiser/tank, using her stone-power things as armor/stuns/attacks.

There are ways around it. He doesn't have to look *exactly* like the Flash, just similar to him. And they would give him a name like Flashing Mercury.
Blink is almost entirely necessary on him. I love hit and run classes and this seems like a good one of them.
I know I was just using the title that Smite gave him. They call him the unbound because they used to bind him with chains and he would break free, thus being unbound
You 2 forget Fenrir. His ultimate grabs people in his mouth and then he can carry them to the ally(s). Not to mention Hades' ultimate that's a massive AoE pull.
Except Erez said this morning that Hel was being re-introduced a week from now, give or take some room for flexibility, with Sun Wukong being three-weeks away. No mention of Aphrodite being re-introduced thus far. Because you know, Venus = Aphro in Roman.

You're in fact wrong, though. Greek mythology came thousands of years before roman mythology. And the romans did in fact take greek mythology as a starting point, only to change a few things to make it different than their original versions, but roman gods are the original greek gods, just with some name changes and some legends and mythos changes.
Their culture was slightly different, but their religion was essentially the same.
