*UPDATE* I've recently discovered how to pull the project frame rate into the expression 😀 Woo! Here it is: ceil((time)/comp:GetPrefs().Comp.FrameFormat.Rate)
Excellent! Other videos I’ve seen on this subject just say, “click this, enter this”, etc. without explaining what is happening. You’ve done a great job in making it understandable. Thank you!
DUDE! Coming in clutch again for one of my videos (wrecked). Realized I wanted this 2 hours before posting and had it done in 30 mins. Appreciate your ability to teach. The clarity, speed yet slow build up. Brilliant. Thanks again!
Even though I am still really new to Davinici I love the fact that there are stuff that are actually programable. Being a programmer it make my life easier. Also In programming parlance: Parentheses are "(" or ")", Brackets are "[" or "]" and Curley Brackets: "{" or "}"
Useful tutorial! It's literally the first thing in Davinci that I wouldn't figure out by myself. I simple didn't know there's an option using expressions
Alex you are the MVP of the day. Every tutorial you make helps me out so much. Down to earth personality, stellar content and an entertaining presentation. Thank you for putting in the effort to make our nooby videos that tiny bit better. Keep up the good work!
@@BillyRybka *strokes Cat* Not if I get your first Agent Rybka! 😆 I've got some more expressions coming up soon dude. I think you'll find them interesting (hopefully!). They've been frying by brain the past few days 😆

Brilliant! Just the kind of advanced stuff I'm looking for. I bet you're just the guy who can help me. I have a 20 minute video that I've shrunk to about a minute using Retime Controls. I'd like to add a timer that represents the original time rather then the new condensed time. Ideally the timer would speed up and slow down as the video speeds up and slows down. I hope I explained that right. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thx!
Hi Alex, Thank you, I'll be using this to count frames for creating animation sync'd to music. Add Title + dynamic counter across the whole song, then cut to the beat, or significant points of music, result gives how many frames are need to animate for each cut. Add cuts, slide cut points as needed, dynamic results. Use comp.RenderEnd-Comp.RenderStart .. " frames" This is exactly what I needed in 2024.
I really like your way of teaching, Alex. The video is clearly thought out, and the well dosed amount of repetitive steps just strengthens the learning. Really good. Thank you 🙂
Hey alex! I've been trying to find a better way to edit the expressions, I mean a bigger box where to input the code (better if adjustable). Do u know to look for this or how to do it? Thanks!
Thank you!!! That was one of the BEST tutorials I have ever seen!!! Just wonderful how clear and concise your explanations are. I am definitely subscribed!!
MAN! Thank you for this! I tried making a countdown with expressions a few months ago and couldn't get it to work properly and ran out of time for the project I was on. Thanks for thiS!
Cheers! Great tutorial as ever! Wasn't aware I had that right click function at all! I'm using it for a fake 'high score' counter with time * 10 and a retro 8-bit font!
oh this is amazing, I've just used this to make a counter for a distance thing. I used what you shared and made it work for me. I knew the distance jumped was 28ft and I did it during the length of the clip so this is what I came out with floor(time*(28/comp:GetPrefs().Comp.FrameFormat.Rate)) .. "ft" I'd love to learn more about this but this is what I have for now. Would love to do things to one decimal place etc but for what I do this is a great start. It's funny though as anyone watching will just assume it's a super easy thing to do ;) thanks again
Another very informative video Alex. I will never remember that stuff but I've captured the video and can check it out again if I need to use it. Thanks You Mate
I thought I would still need After Effects for motion graphics even though I changed to DaVinci Resolve, but this video made me realize how powerful fusion actually is. I just need to get used to using nodes instead of layers. Thank you!
Not got into expressions yet so this is very handy, enjoyed the longer format. Knew those computer science classes at Dudley Technical college would come in handy one day!!
@@MrAlexTech i learned a lot of things from you sir thank you so much I am gonna share my first video tomorrow insallah so much respect and love from Turkeeeeey 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷
you are great... where can we learn about the expressions that davinci works with... the manual or is there a smaller document just with the expressions and some kind of explanation?
Thank you for good tutorial. I have a question. After calculation, how to properly display numbers bigger than 999 and decimal numbers? 🙃 Like this 1.000,00 (dot for thousand and comma for decimal). Thanks.😎
This is incredibly helpful, like many of your videos. Is there a way to make the counter stop on a number? For example, I'm trying to count up to 90%. I'm using a workaround of copying the text object as a static number, then extending it out in the timeline and pulling back the timeline length of the counting clip but it's not ideal.
Fantastic tutorial like everyone is saying... well explained.. My only problem is being able to see the smaller than small font size when typing in the expressions... Is there a way to change the font sizes in the Inspector? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Alex another great tutorial, keep it coming. You should have a little longer vids for more monetization imo. After all you're teaching us valuable things. Could you complement this tutorial with another about loading bar for time/percentage? Something to put at bottom portion of the video to see and read the progress of desired clip.
Hi, great video! I am trying to build a dynamic HUD with meters in DVR. I have the progress bar and text with an expression that counts up with the time of the comp similar to how you show in your video. But I feel like there's another way that gives me more control of the meter and numbers going up and down besides how long the comp is. Do you have any ideas? Thank you!
*UPDATE*
I've recently discovered how to pull the project frame rate into the expression 😀
Woo! Here it is:
ceil((time)/comp:GetPrefs().Comp.FrameFormat.Rate)
Where can we find all 5he variables available in davinci?
Hi, how can make timer but not 1:35:12 i want only minutes like this: 95:12
Hi Alex, you are a magician who explains things that seem so complicated in a simple way. Thank you and have a pleasant day.
Great video! Made the concept of expressions in Fusion very easy to learn and "comp.RenderEnd" is definitely a good one to know.

Hi Alex. Really helpful as usual. Can I ask how to create a counter using expressions that simply adds 1 at every key frame. Thanks in advance.

Ohhh it goes deep (phrasing)! I love Archer! 😆
Thanks Alex, your tutorial is helpful, but is there any Way to freeze the counter 3 or 4 seconds before end of clip ? Please tell me. David
Such good tutorial

Very cool... thanks!
My screen is blank; it only displays whatever is in quotes. For example; when enter 10+10 and hit enter, the screen stay black.
