Does art style actually matter?

  • There are lots of videos around UA-cam about how to find your art style, and in past years I remember wondering why that was even a goal for so many people, and why anyone would want to settle with drawing in one single way. It seemed to me that drawing in only one style would make you unable to draw any other way, and as a result make you a worse artist. I don’t think I was exactly wrong to think this, but there’s a lot more to it, and I wasn’t really aware of all the benefits having an art style can have. I’ll go over the positives and downsides that having one or multiple styles can have, and what’s best suited for you based on what goals you have.

Some additional comments! (your optional reading homework)
-A lot of this same stuff applies to the subject matter of your work. If you mostly draw trees, you can become the ultimate master boss of trees relatively quickly. But if you literally draw nothing but trees, you’ll feel pretty stuck with anything else (but hey, your trees will be epic!)
-If you’re interested in concept work and your go-to style is a popular one in entertainment, variety is still good for practice but you can certainly focus in on that one to get good at it in particular. Say you do realistic designs, there are lots of live action movies, shows, and video games with realistic graphics. But don’t force yourself into creating designs with a look you don’t enjoy making, because you wouldn’t want to end up on a project using a style (or subject matter!) you don’t have fun with. Even if you're not a hobbyist, you should still focus on stuff you like!
    K bye haha

If you're a hobbyist, who cares, do what you want. Only wanna do one specific style for all your life? Go ham. You're fully intentional in not sticking to a style? You do you! It's only a different story when you're a professional artist. You need to be skilled and flexible enough so you can fulfill the client's direction. Yes, I know. It can happen when a studio is seeking out highly specific artists for their highly specific styles, but that's the extreme exception, not the rule.

In my opinion every artist just enjoy drawing with whatever style they love ❤

I think it's less about having a distinctly visual "style" and more about having a comfort zone, really. Not having a comfort zone is a big part of what makes art hard. I wasn't worried about art style for the longest time, but now I wish I had a default modus operandi just so I wouldn't blank whenever somebody tells me to draw a face.

Yes! Art is therapeutic and good for the mind and soul. I draw everyday. Maybe nobody will like it but that’s okay, it’s the feeling of creating. Perhaps, I don’t care what others think. It’s for me and it’s a great feeling to be creative. ❤

I had a question. Don’t know if anyone will ever see this. But I am new(ish) to art and I want to improve. I’ve heard people do master study’s to improve their understanding and style to adopt certain parts of another persons art style. I want to try, but how do I do a master study? What should I pay attention to in paticular? Where do I begin? Someone please help.

I'm a one-trick-pony, and it's been pretty frustrating lately as learn from professional artists. On the other hand, I've noticed I learn how to summarize and understand new characters much faster when using my own style even if that means temporarily losing some key features. Balance is definitely the key.

I definitely draw my characters in my usual style as I get the hang of them, and if you’re having trouble branching out with different styles, try keeping the structure but changing the medium or shading style, I recently scanned in a pencil sketch and coloured it digitally and it turned out amazing! (I usually draw in digital art with cell shading, and I tried a more blended painterly style)

Whether you have 1 or more styles as long as you like it it doesn't matter all that much
