a bit of clarification, random crits have a base chance of happening, but that can be boosted by dealing damage, so, you can basically do nothing and still get rewarded with 3x damage, or do a 10k and dont get any crits at all, melee also has higher base chance, which is why memes like "pan always crits" "ubersaw always crits" were born. And i need to mention, crit hacks exist, some groups figured out how to trigger them more often on primaries/secondaries and even getting to 100% crit rate on melee, which makes it impossible to even get close to them. Some bots use crit hacks too, mostly on melee, as far as i know there are sniper bots that switch to melee when you use vaccinator bullet resistance uber, and then they proceed to deal 195, most likely killing you.

As a person that plays tf2 atleast 4 hours a day, everyday random crits just don't feel good to receive or to throw. I'm a hybridknight main so I'm almost always in range to get random crit while getting almost none myself, and the ones I do get (with pipes) never feel good, it doesn't feel like something you deserve, it takes the practice you need to get good at aiming pipes and throws it out the window cause why practice everyday to feel fufilled when you double pipe every scout you come across when you just can spam a payload and get 3 kills by just doing that, what's the point of learning to trimp/pipe jump to get into melee/close range to just get random crit by a gibusvision sniper instead of charging up a sticky.
It's always frustrating, and never rewarding imo

8:10 "Are random crits in comp?" Much like how 90% of all unlockable weapons are banned, no, they're not in comp.
9:22 "Did he get the voice actor for Scout to say these lines?" Yes, he's the most active and involved official VA in the TF2 community.
12:56 "What are the tutorials?" Bad. Worse than a mobile game's.
22:29 "But can't they get crits?" No, robots actually can't get random crits, they can only crit you if they're set to be a crit-boosted robot or charged by a Kritz Medic bot.

a good example is the Rainblower and Pyrovision Goggles (Or any item enabling pyroland) as some props are actually invisible or easier to see through in pyroland.
Another one is the Solem Vow as if one medic runs it, the other is forced to as well which makes for boring gameplay, same with the Vita-Saw because if one medic runs it and the other doesnt, that medic has a instant advantage.

Not to mention the various fashion options you get access to over time, companions, pets, and so on, from MOA units, Sentinels, Kavats (big cats), and a metric fuckton of dogs. Like, oh my god there are so many Kubrow-esque companions.

I honestly think only ranged crits should be removed. While I have been annoyed by crit rockets and pipes, I always have fun in melee fights. Melee is often a last ditch attempt to win a fight when no options remain and anything can happen. I like the chaos of it once it gets to that point. Plus, melee crits happen so much more often than ranged crits that it makes up a large portion of its average damage and removing them would also require all "no random crit" melees to be rebalanced.

As someone who's been playing TF2 since roughly a year after it launched, it was definitely a _very_ different game back then. Community servers were much more popular back then, thanks to casual not being a thing. There was quickplay, but it didn't have the strict divide between official and community servers that we have now (no leveling system, ad-hoc connections were allowed on all servers, quickplay could connect you to eligible community servers, etc). If you got matched onto a server you liked, you could favorite it and come back to it at any time. Becoming a regular player of certain servers was not uncommon. The whole system encouraged the use of the server browser, and eventually exploring what else there was out there to see, which encouraged people to get more creative and experimental with the maps and content they made, because there was a chance people would see it.
I miss the days when there were tons of "dick around" maps with no objective other than to have fun. It was always a treat to explore someone's passion project where they included a bunch of easter eggs for no other reason than that they could, or made something completely wacky and disconnected from the game's setting, like a map where the mercs are all the size of mice and they're fighting in a child's bedroom. For all that the game's lore has gotten sillier over the years, it feels like that came at the cost of the fun and silliness of the actual gameplay.

10:40 like the developer said, random crits were essentially designed as a "highlight" mechanic - make a moment where you're doing well even better and more memorable by letting you go just a lil' bit farther...at the cost of your opponent who just got randomly crit. Now, debatably, you were already on a roll so how bad could it be if you kill one/two more people?
Imo random crits are just proof that TF2 was never meant to be reduced to numbers and played "professionally." Does that justify crits? Probably not, but removing crits would definitely be a step *away* from a more casual environment.
Alternatively, any game where you can "win" or "lose", players tend to think winning = fun and losing =\= not fun. Given the nature of TF2 and the concept of "good sportsmanship," you're supposed to enjoy the moment more than the victory screen, which I agree with! Being a spy in a cardboard box is **far** more entertaining than pushing a cart will ever be

8:10 no random crits aren’t in both the ingame “Valve Comp” as most call it or in the community league comps like RGL (NA) and ETF2L (EU). This is to keep it skill based for both teams and to keep it fair. If rc’s were in comp, just one rocket or pipe could complete turn the tides of the game, giving an unfair advantage to help the losing team or help the winning team win harder. In casual, this doesn’t really matter due to the amount of players in the lobby (casual 12v12 compared to 6s’ 6v6 or Highlander’s 9v9), and the fact that most people don’t really play to win in casual and just play to have fun.
Edit: also about your statements about comp being bad, you’re not completely wrong. The ingame comp (Valve comp) is very bad. It’s hacker infested, has extremely long queues, and hasn’t been updated since it’s launch. 3rd party community comp leagues are very much so alive and great competitive leagues. The two most popular leagues (RGL and ETF2L) both have thousands of current players and hundreds, maybe even thousands of teams.

League of Legends appears, probably one of the most popular free to play games in the world for several years: is this Hearthstone? Lol
Although maybe something you could look into, theres a mountain of content there in characters, lore, gameplay ect could be another thing to branch into.

I can do with or without random crits. I'm just here to have fun. I'm usually in the grey area between messing around and playing the objective. Of course, I do try to read the room and react accordingly the rest of players are on one end of the spectrum. Not having random crits wouldn't change any of that, so I'm fine with it going away.

If you ask me.I hate random crit from all my heart. It not make a game last long at all. It like for a new player get one is "yay i dont know what it is but yay" but if you got kill by it "why am i dead. how" so it didnt help at all. If you play for longer got alot of skill when you get it " ... " that all my skill in this game is useless. If got kill by it "wow my skill and exp for play good is just useless" and i didnt play pub at all bcoz of that. Only kind of ppl that ok with it is someone who play by dont care at all win lose whatever just play. But when you try to win at all and it got rob by a random crit that have so much bad feeling.

Well, the only good thing about random crits is that they are cool, but that´s it, is really pity to see medics and snipers switch quickly to their melees because one time they instakill someone with a crit. Besides, tf2 is a kinda old game, there are players who are become really good and don´t need this kind of thing, that just hinders their experience. On a more personal level, i really despise random crits, mostly because i usually play demoknight and there are times that half of my deaths are just because of random crits, i understand that low experience players usually die a lot and don´t care if some of their deaths are by random crits, but that´s not all the cases.

i think TF2 should keep random crits BUT either
A: keep it a very low chance overall so when they do happen, their very rare and make for insane moments for everyone.
B: keep it a low chance but slightly increased chance for newer players up to a certain rank/level

imagine you're heavy pushing the cart with a medic about to uber when suddenly you and the medic die from a crit sticky from a spamming demoman, the aggravation is enough to piss me off
sure when you're just screwing around its fine but when you're trying to play a bit more seriously on payload or control point maps its makes all the difference
just play heavy and realize how many times you die over scouts just running at you with their stupid bats out and just critting you to death, then you will realize how stupid rng can be
I have come to hate getting crits as well cause I want to beat them with my skill not because of a stupid mechanic

Personally this my take, tf2 isn't an jrpg. Tf2 is pretty much the only fps game that has random crits, but why? To make the game more random? Ecxuse me, but I've played battlefield and if anything is more random than a scout one shotting a soldier, it's a tank flying through the air and hitting a helicopter with a canister shell. Difference? The scout does it while playing the game normally, while the tank crew specifically had to plan for this, be it with ungodly amounts of c4 or shooting randomly in some direction. Battlefield feels so much more random, because of the amount of player choices it gives.
Tf2 isn't a random game, it's a game with linear paths to specific objectives. Random crits doesn't make more random, it's just more annoying. If you need to rely on random crits to even the odds, I don't think you should even care about doing well. Because at that point your just gambling to do well.
