Nature is reclaiming the area for herself. With landslides well documented in the area , it's only a matter of time until the A625 in the Peak District vanishes for good.
Welcome to Britain's Abandoned Roads. In this series, I go out to explore some of the UKs abandoned or disused roads. Old roads in the woods, motorway junctions or forgotten slip roads, this series has it all! Join me as I travel all over the country seeking out forgotten and abandoned infrastructure.

Love this video. Being from the area makes it even more interesting.
What was funny was when I researched local newspaper articles about it some years back. Apparently after the ‘79 landslip there was some flip-flopping about weather to open it up again. Essentially the towns of Castleton and Hathersage went to war. So long as the road was closed then the wagons from the cement factory in Hope had to drive through Hathersage So naturally they wanted the road reopened. Castleton wanted nothing to do with the wagons continuing to come through, and so opposed plans to reopen it. This lead to week by week the headlines in the local press such as
“Outrage in Castleton as plans announced to reopen Mam Tor road”
Followed a few weeks later by
“Outrage in Hathersage as plans scrapped to reopen Mam Tor road”
These villages are a matter of a few miles apart and populated by the same families, so it was entertaining to watch this spat with the benefit of 20 years of separation.

To the north is another abandoned road. The Woodhead Road (A628) is a main Pennine crossing from Greater Manchester to South Yorkshire. In the 1980s the Stocksbridge bypass (A616) was built, and the new connection left a section of the old Woodhead Road to nature. The former junction was the site of the Flouch Inn. Deprived of its status as a road house, the Flouch struggled on for a number of years before giving up the ghost, and is now the location of a small housing estate. Speaking of ghosts, the Stocksbridge bypass gained notoriety during its construction and early years as a haunted area and is featured in a number of television shows.

Many years ago I was going to Sheffield from Manchester, when asking directions I was told "Turn right at the Flouch Inn" so I did, sorry to hear of its demise.

    • @borderlands6606
      @borderlands6606 9 місяців тому

@@Steve14ps It lasted until around 2015, and there are photos online of The Flouch being demolished in 2016. Like many buildings of the pre-motorway and bypass era, they developed to service a volume of passing traffic, and when that went elsewhere, looked out of proportion to their location. Coaching inns would have had a similar issue I expect.

For those who mayt be interested, where the road has really slipped away from itsen, an interesting perspective on older road prep pre surfacing back to domestic ash (glass and pottery etc) can be viewed with ease.

Fun fact: This road was originally built to take the pressure off Winnats Pass (just up the road, near Sparrowpit). Ironically, since it’s demise, the narrow and steep pass is once more your only way between Chapel and Castleton. Well, unless you drive down into Bakewell and cut back…

    • @bfapple

A road I drove down many, many times in my youth en route to visit wonderful Castleton, with its caves, the unique Blue John stone from the mine of the same name, Peak, Treak and Speedwell caves, plus Peveril Castle sat on top of the hill overlooking the village. Fantastic place for a day out - and only about 20 minutes from my old stomping ground. Whilst in the Chapel area, you could have got yourself some brake linings - Ferodo are Chapel based.

Hi, thanks and a great channel, I am so pleased I have found it.
I can shed some light on the meaning of Chapel-en-le Frith, as I used to live there. It was as it sounds, and it was indeed a small Chapel in a wood. It was originally called Chapel-en-le Frish, ( why the name change I don't know). Frish in French means literally an unkempt wooded area.
Chapel-en-le Frith, translated means "Chapel in the wood".

Yeah, I'm a driver. What I meant was , the peak district / Derbyshire has loads of 'weird' rules to protect the area , one is you have to have been living locally for a certain amount of time before you can get a house and move in - they do that because locals were getting pushed out of their own district because, let's face it , it's a beautiful area and rich folk were buying up properties and locals couldn't get on the property ladder.
I apologize if my earlier comment came off as condescending it's just that I agree with the local council trying to do what they can to preserve the area.... doesn't stop them from quarrying the F out of the hillsides though does it?
