Who’d have thought a load of old tarmac would be so interesting! It’s a great place to take the kids or visitors to see something unusual. Thanks again for entertaining us all!

The railway track up the hill is the way the Treak Cliff Cavern gets its supplies delivered , its a winch operated trolley and is still in use. I was a part time guide at the cavern at the time of the slip and I was in the Land rover that discovered it early in the morning as we headed over to pick up some other staff. My boss who was driving, ( Cyril Adamson) said they would never repair it and he was of course correct.

Cheers Andrew. I never knew it was still in use. I'd love to see that in action 👍

Fascinating stuff. As a kid, we holidayed in Chapel-en-le-Frith, visited the caves, etc. I think the road may have still been open then (just) 😮

I vaguely remember going up or down the road prior to its closure when a section had traffic lights. Probably around 1975 when I was six.
I'm also curious as to why Chapel en le Frith is so heavily signposted in Sheffield!! There's not a lot there.
Keep up with the great content. 👊

Funny you should mention Chapel en le Frith. I noticed the same with Newark signs in the south east of Sheffield

It's the first time that I've ever seen a video or photos of this road landslide below Mam Tor. Quite a lot of the road is all over the place, in thick chunks. On a visit to Castleton, I vaguely remember years ago, trucks (tankers) climbing up around that road in very low gear, and loaded with cement from the Blue Circle works across the valley there. It was with pure luck that the road didn't give away when one of those was proceeding over it. Anyhow, this is a splendid video, and many thanks for going up there and shooting it.

Fascinates me every time I go up there. Great piece of geography.

I remember a school trip to Blue John mines & Mam Tor as a kid in the early 80s, so this was a brilliant trip down memory lane for me. I have to say you really captured the level of destruction really well with the video. Thanks so much for this. Like & subscribed! ;)

I walked that road a few years back, definitely fascinating how nature has been reclaiming the land over the years. I found a few photos on Flickr from 1988 when the road looked a bit more complete than it does today.

I remember a school trip to castleton when I was about 8. So that would have been around 1988. We walked up a bit of the road.

@@WobblyRunner we went to the treak cliff cavern in the mid 80s but don't think we went as far up as the broken road, it's a long time ago now though. 😄

That was tremendous. I was up there in the 90's when my Wife and I walked up Mam Tor, so it was nice to see it again. I'm always amazed that with our obsession with Health and Safety that the road has not been closed completely!!! You've made the right decision to hold back on the disused railway explores for a while, my trek into Spinkhill Tunnel was made that much harder by all the stuff that was growing, it was like the Amazon Jungle!!! It's great Fish and Chips at Castleton by the way.

You're not wrong about the health and safety. Some bits like like they've not got long left before they are dropping over the edge.

I really enjoyed this video, it's one of the places (and areas) of great interest. I didn't know about the road until a couple of years ago, so have missed out on previous visits, but I look forward to seeing it soon.
