    I use this pack for camping in the fall. In the winter, the long top attachment straps are used to carry snowshoes when we are walking on the road.

    Really like that pass through side pocket for skies or an axe. Every time I think I am finally settled on my pack I see a design like that and now I want one. Great design. Nicely done.

    Excellent review of the Ludwig pack, in fact I ended up buying one because of this video . Got it just as lockdown 2021 started and found it ideal as it swallowed everything needed for hiking & picnics with the wife and two boys. Through pockets down the side are brilliant for storing
    Your walking poles etc. Has served me well this year on numerous hikes and still surprises me how much I can fit into it.
    I agree it's not the best pack when it comes to getting stuff out off, that very small complaint aside. Excellent pack.!!

    It's comfortable (I have one) and it looks great, but not ideal if you want to get at things frequently or in a hurry, eg water, food, waterproof clothing. Sorry to be a party pooper and I grew up with packs like this, but now I'll take clips, zips and lots of compartments in preference to what's basically a bucket with buckles.

      I have one too! I would have killed for one of these in the 60,s. Brown & Best made a copy the Cresta de Lu back then, way beyond my apprentice
      Income back then. So I bought one of these for old times sake? Love it even though I have modern rucksacks at the top end of berghaus ,karrimor and Lowe ranges

    I use mine a good bit. I'm 6ft, 180 lbs or so, and not being very broad shouldered and with a medium(!) torso lenght it fits me well. The shulder straps are much more comfortable than they look, and its a good pack for carrying up to about 22lbs.

    Thanks mate for a great review on this pack. My military surplus shop just sent me an email and the Norwegian Military Rucksack is in stock; same color as yours. I want to call them and make sure the additional straps are included. Thank you for taking the time to show us how to "break it down" to the frame; very useful to know. Those shoulder straps look very narrow and I would say that 20 pounds would be comfortable. Any more than that would be a burden. I actually was waiting for a Swedish LK35 to become available but they seem to be super popular therefore rare in the marketplace.

    very nice retro historic pack!!
    forget kirk douglases version of the telemark raid made by hollywood studios tho entertaining in itself i found ray mears documentary reenacted by modern day rm commandos and norwegian armed forces pt1 pt2 on yt a far more realistic appraisal of what those guys actually did accomplish!! one of them was a norwegian xc ski champ who was chased for several days by an equally talented german downhill ski champ over the haardaanger vidda!! plateau the norwegian guy was faster uphills than the german the german faster on the downhill sections both were on a par on the levels!!
    this duel lasted many days between them it came to its crux finale when the norwegian realised he was tiring and the german was catching up to him so to counteract this he decided to ski up to the highest peak top in the area region in orders to lose him?
    he got to the top ahead of the german but after he got there there was nowhere elses to go to!!?
    except ski back downhill again and this german on 3rd day hadnt given up chasing him!!
    was determined he also caught him back up as he skied downhill
    in the ends he stopped dead after reaching the levels and seeing this german gaining on him only 50m away he stopped dead in anger pointed his empty weapon at him started shouting at him i think he even hurled his pistol at him
    the german was so surprised hed stopped after 3days to challenge him both were in middle of nowhere and the german was startled by his angry reaction both realised they were both skied out exhausted he turned arounds and went back skiing his trails again let the norwegian guy go!!
    he skied on still livid that this german skier had managed to catch him and sought refuge at the house of a friends family whom he didnt quite know where they lived
    as he was exhausted out of food supplies tired etc they put him up
    until he was fit to continue again
    the pack is a great pack
    the only problem with a bergen is that because of the lack of a waist harness it can chaffe when heavily loaded if walking all day and there are a lot of rolling or sideways movements
    it therefore pays to pad the corners or add a bit of lateral stability to neutralise that small amount of chaffe or play on the hips or pelvic girdle that can arise from these packs if you are walking with a heavyweight through diff terrain all day where loads can flip flop a bit side to sides! its important that you protect yer hips but i dont believe on this particular model its another ollie bergen model!!

      Humble Trekker Bushcraft they had to shift an inordinate amount of kit before even getting near to the heavy water production plant & eventually launching the raid any normal person would have been too exhausted to even conduct a raid or gain entry and evade again!!
      their survival in earnest began after the raid was over i think at one point the germans had mobilised thousands of trained troops and mt warfare brigades to destroy all the refuges or keep watch on them on regular ski patrol basis they cached away in a refuge hidden in rocks staying clear of cabins that were often visited by the german ski patrols that were actively looking for them after the raid
      they got near to starvation had dyssentry and were often hypothermic the one guy who was a hunter traced a herd of reindeer 7miles away stalked the male of 1 herd until they had got closer to the cabin as they were only 3 bullets left
      he had to use sparingly if captured
      etc
      so others were sick in cabin too weak to move from dyssentry
      starving hungry etc or infected
      he crawled in snow down winds of nearest reindeer got it with a 1 shot kill had the problem then of portaging it all heavy meat as it was back to the cabin
      he being a hunter left the steaks and took the offal n synovial fluids instead back to cabin
      this proved to be an absolute lifesaver to the 2 weaker sicker men once they had had a meal sucking out leg joints synovial fluids etc they aquired enough strength to recover and go help him with recovering the rest of the carcasse which he concealed against finding by any other plateau predators! without his long shot crawl stalk in snow freezing cold almost hypothermic in march theyd gone over 3.5 months 4 months or so over harshest winter without resupply being hunted by half the troops in norway!!
      a quite remarkable acheivement
      raf resupplied them at beginning but a crash and german intel caused them to stop reg supply drops leaving the men in desperate needs of resupply after raid was over caches were dangerous to get to in a arctic snow enviro as any activity tends to leave tracks or get noticed
      by onlookers
      so its a very diff place to survive anyway even when supplied but living off yer shoe leather very hard indeeds!! remarkable acheivement!!
      1 or 2 of em are still alive do motivational speeches talks to maw troops in training!!

    • @6brettes
      @6brettes 7 років тому

      Humble Trekker Bushcraft that long belly stalk of a reindeer they say saved all of their lives sparked up their morale after months of hardship
      they would not have made it off the haardanger vidda alive without shooting eating that last shot reindeer!!

      A few more details. The name Ludvig is after a popular book character from books by the author Kjell Aukrus who used this type of backpack: www.aukrust.no/kjell-aukrust/solan-ludvig-og-reodor/
      The most common name in Norway is rypesekk (Grouse pack).
      And the inventors name is Ole Ferdinand Bergan: no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ole_F._Bergan (sorry, only Norwegian text) or www.bergansofnorway.no/historie (also Norwegian)

    Switch those straps and a lighter frame and this would still be relevant. Although, would you lose strength?
    That is almost the same layout as an American ALICE Pack. It’s like a trip through history. Right down to the top flap compartment.
    They still sell the frame at the Army Surplus shop in Idaho Falls, Idaho Untied States Of America if anyone wants one. They probably deliver.

    Hey, man. New subscriber here from U.S. I like your reviews after watching a couple and thought "yeah, support the guy if you like his stuff", so here I am. I wanted to ask you about this ruck, since I get surplus catalogs all the time and Coleman's surplus has them for $40 U.S. all the time and was wondering if they are worth that, since yours is the first review of it that I've seen The ones they have seem to be like yours, same green with the white seam-taping, etc... ( I didn't know that it had a top flap pocket, which I'd probably use for mags/ammo/extra meds/stuff like that after I put a can of Scotch Guard on the ruck to water proof it. Also didn't know the side pockets were that big or were "sleeves". I could stuff a tactical .12 gauge in one and something like a .30 U.S. M1 Carbine, 0-30 Winchester lever action carbine, and similar in the other, so thank you for that as they didn't mention those features in the catalog ). I was thinking of adding MOLLE webbing and/or ALICE clip attachment points to it so I could carry more gear and have some essentials right there handy and not doff the ruck and dig around in there for something I need quickly like extra mags for my AK and .45, extra med bags and trauma kit, and so-on. So is it worth the $40 U.S., or would I do better putting that money towards a giant Belgian "jigsaw camo" ruck you reviewed, which I found for $65 U.S. ( if it'll hold a ton of stuff it'll hold a bit and everything in between, and I like how you can make the side pouches into an assault pack, as this will be added to my collection of combat and bug out rucks ). I actually like that it doesn't come with sternum and waist belts, as the sternum belt gets in the way of the rifle mags on my chest rig and the waist belt gets in the way of my pistol belt, so I don't use them ( even on big rucks like the U.S. Marine Corps ILBE, even with the assault pack full and with all kinds of stuff MOLLE'd to both ). Your opinions, sir?

    • @verysurvival
      @verysurvival  4 роки тому

      they are two pretty different rucks, the belgian one is a modern one but still has some negatives like it is not that comfortable and the used ones are often pretty much worn out, this one is a basic ruck, with a lot of bad points compared to a modern thing like it is not very water proof, no padded shoulder straps.

    • @cthulhu6697
      @cthulhu6697 3 роки тому

      @@verysurvival Yeah, I've heard of zipper issues with the Belgian M95 Jigsaw camo rucks, but also heard nice things about them as well. As far as Euro military rucks, what I want is the Dutch ARWY Alpine Saracen in DPM camo, but they are going for at least $125 U.S. Until I find a Saracen in good shape, I guess I will continue with my U.S. Mrine Corps ILBE and U.S.G.I. MOLLE 2 large combat ruck. I've just always been intrigued with the Norwegian ruck for some reason. I really don't have mid-sized rucks except for the assault pack for the ILBE, and thought this would be good for a recon and combat patrol ruck if I'm only going to do a 3 day recon ( my philosophy is plan on 3 days, pack for 5-6, as you never know what may happen in a real SHTF/WROL scenario. Thanks for you good review and honest answer to my questions. Cheers from the U.S.A. ;)

    Quote...The sabotage action against the Vemork plant was portrayed in the Franco-Norwegian 1948 film Operation Swallow: The Battle for Heavy Water, where Rønneberg was portrayed by Norwegian actor Claus Wiese.[20] In 1965 the less-than-accurate American film The Heroes of Telemark, starring Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris, was released by Columbia Pictures.[21] Rønneberg dismissed this film as a "hopeless" portrayal, when he told his memories in 2010 after many years of silence...unquote.
