Half a million more UK kids drop into poverty

  • The withdrawal of pandemic-era support combined with the soaring cost of living was always likely to drive up poverty and today there's evidence that Britain's children have begun to pay the price.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
A survey carried out by the End Child Poverty Coalition - and seen exclusively by Channel 4 News - shows more than half a million have dropped below the poverty line in the last year.
But the government insists it has helped hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty in the last decade.

There's no such thing as 'child poverty', there's simply 'poverty'. Children are financially dependant on their parents, which means that child poverty is a result of parent poverty.

How is it that Britain, one of the rich countries has this type of poverty? Poverty when a person works a full time job is dysfunctional. Here in China, we used to be the poorest country in the world and are now doing much better. Here eliminating poverty is a priority. When we talk about lifting people out of 'absolute poverty', we mean third-world poverty. Today in China rent, rice, pork and vegetables are quite cheap and of decent quality. Imported foreign frozen pizzas tend to be grossly expensive. People here used to dream of moving to Britain, now I thank God that I live in China instead.
Also what do they mean that someone doesn't get paid minimum wage? Why isn't the employer prosecuted?

I vowed that my kids would never live in a cold house and never be without food, And if that meant I had to go without then so be it. Also I would have loved a 5% mortgage rate, Mine went up to nearly 16%, I did what I had to do to make ends meet and lived within my means. You always look after your Children first, after all they never asked to be here. I can't believe that some kids don't get a hot meal a home.

Scrapping the 2 child limit on benefits isnt a great idea though is it. That just rewards people for having more kids. How does that help anything? If you cant afford to have 5 kids. Dont have 5 kids. Living wage still isnt high enough for the poorest but if you increase it, inflation will increase further. Costs have to come down first, otherwise, you flood the market with extra money that only causes prices to continue to rise.

Your not living in poverty if you can afford a mortgage and to run a car. You probably have a savings account to take the kids on holiday, unless the other parent has a disability or is a carer there is no reason not to be in work. Probably have a few subscriptions, Nike trainers and a big tv with console don’t they. People have been living beyond their means for way too long and it is too easy to say the government should be doing more. There are some children in absolute poverty where they don’t have anything to play with and have never been on holiday, these people need to give their heads a wobble.

My biggest tip is that in most countries they have developed a system for any fresh produce ( close to use-by date) to be take to a central not-for-profit group and then it can be distributed from there....Canned and boxed goods are less likely to be given to charity groups because they have a long shelf life but fruit, vegies, milk and meat have a short life and it is cheaper for the supermarkets to give them to charities than pay high rubbish fees......It's also less good food going straight to landfill.......The key is is you have to spend time chopping vegetables and putting them in bags to be frozen etc......Lot's pf prep work but you get free fresh produce and there is less food waste going to landfill.
