  • Today you are invited for a tour of my favourite antique book shop in my corner of France here in my town St Etienne which opened at the middle of the 19th Century. It's where a big part part of the old books I own, come from.
I also show you some monthly favourites from december and january.
Hope you will enjoy the tour !

Who knows! Actually I also was intersested in this book as our Marshal from my historical series was called "Bayard" by some historians , as they both behaved the same way a few centuries from each other. But yes it's hard to leave this bookshop that's for sure !

I LOVED Dennis Severs House in London! I went there in 2011 and it was a highlight of my holiday. I tell everybody about it! I do volunteer work at a Heritage house museum and I wish the curators would follow Dennis Severs model.

    • @Merveillesenpapier

Oh yes , You have visited it ! Very nice ! I can imagine that it was a highlight of your trip ! It was mine too , yes trying to be inspired by some of the beautiful ideas they used would really make a difference in heritage houses , and museums.Make them so much more entertaining! I ve noticed though , in some french classic hotels/museums , which one can visit, they do more a sort of theatrical display than before a bit like at the dennis severs house, there is always the difference that one cannot wander everywhere in teh rooms and be so close to precious objects, but things seem to move slowly.. I hope they will imitate than in your House in Australia !

I’m always jealous about people like the guy in the window (1:50), who’s minding his own business (probably something mundane), completely unaware of the treasure shop he has in front of his eyes. While I’m sitting here… Far, far away… Dreaming of visiting that shop xD.

Preservation and Conservation are wonderful tools for saving historical books. *Please, share your process. It's so satisfying to watch conservation methods.* I thought one moment that I might have a career in preservation and conservation of antiquities, but I think here (US), you have to pass a chemistry class, so that was out for me, sadly. I would have looked for work in New England.

I'm not a specialist but Ive seen kit and ways online for amateurs who want to maintain their old books , so next time I will do things I will for sure share them from an amateur enthusiast perspective if it might help others . These jobs are so fascinating, yes it's so satisfying to see people restoring and helping these precious pojects and books continuing their lifes for others to enjoy in the next centuries.... Oh really? I didn't know that chemistry was part of the exams.....That's sad....

"vis-avis la rue" is still used a l'ile Maurice in Mauritian Creole, as well as other "Middle French" words and expressions. Soulier instead of chaussure, brassiere instead of soutien-gorge, astere instead of en ce moment etc. I collect antique French books and i encounter many such peculiarities :)

De dechets et du sang... ...brulant... ...tus.... Of offal and of the blood... ...burning... ...still.... it is free with kindle unlimited it is a collection of English/French poems and short stories hope you like something if you read
Here is one of the poems it is a poetic interpretation of head of a dead young man painting by theodore gericault
Head of a dead young man
Beneath a canvas coarse and crass, the head of a young man upon a cushion soft and of care; feminine chin; upon the lower lip the blood of God; fine nose; hair of an infant here...and...down there; upon his front, the sublime illumination, that descends, intimately as though of ivory flame.... ...when, of lavender and of rose, ascending vaguely towards the exegetic darkness, the offal; disclosed thus, profound and grave, an immense lesion, as though of a dolourous ulcer...from where all comes...where all returns....
