I have dedicated sleep clothes and agree putting on cold clothes in the morning is a pain. Tip: I put my hiking clothes under my air mattress as soon as I get into camp and they are somewhat warm in the morning. Happy Hiking
Thank you that or put in the foot box of my quilt in the morning to warm up. Only issue is I always forget to do that in the morning plus I’d have to carry the sleep clothes on my back. Just got rid of them all together lol
@@triumfant2 hey Virginia, very nice to hear from you and welcome aboard. Yeah I agree it seems to be more of the young’s kids vlogging and harder to find content from people a little more “mature”… welcome aboard!
Totally get what you are saying here. I am only a little over five foot. But I did not care for the alteplex. It was too narrow even though long. Still it would have been ok. But mine just came loose. I mean I had to get up at least once each night and retighten the lines. Since I full time in my van most of my hiking gear was involved in a fire at the storage facility I use. Everything has to be replaced. I have been trialing a friends duplex and that is what I am going with. I also upgraded to the warmer air mattress after a very cold night in Yellowstone. Certain things are worth it. .
Marmalade, I have learned so much from you. Let me give you my thoughts. I now have an Altaplex and I am taller (6'4"+) and older (62+). The Altaplex works well (~50 days on the PCT last year) for me. No issues on the feet or head. Let go off a Big Agnes 2-person which was a great tent. Did the AT in it, and there was not problem with it. Changed to the Altaplex for weight savings. Biggest issue was that my pack (almost empty) had to be in the vestibule rather than in my tent. However, I could have the pack in my tent if I wanted it under my feet, which a lot of folks like. I'd day go for the Altaplex.
Hey great hearing from you and so glad I’ve helped you in some way although you sound like a pretty accomplished hiker. Yeah I’m not ruling out the Altaplex although my first experience with it when I did the long trail wasn’t very positive considering the line locks kept letting loose. I’m assuming it was an anomaly. Somebody. Somebody in the comments suggested the Durston Xmid Pro 1P so I’m intrigued by that tent and researching it. Thanks for the insight and for watching this video!
I know others in the comments have suggested this already but, the more I listened to your wishlist for a true ultralight shelter the more you listed the characteristics of the Durston X-mid Pro 1. You have clearly ""graduated" (as you say) to a full ultralight experience if you are experienced using a tarp (not many are) and you forgo sleep clothes and just sleep in your hiking gear (well maybe not to the Jupiter level - that is full Ph.D.). It took me a while to realize sleeping in my hiking clothes was not a problem (I know I am slow). But, I totally understand the desire for a more complete shelter than a tarp when the wind is blowing the rain around or when you are escaping from the mosquitos. In that case the Durston is much better than the Altaplex for rain since it provides better protection from splatter and blown rain since it has zippered doors and will pitch much lower to the ground with a fully tensioned floor. Protection from the bugs is the same unless you take into account the much larger internal volume of the Durston which makes being inside it more comfortable. I know you are choosing the Altaplex over the Plex Solo since it has more head and foot room to keep your quilt drier from condensation. I am 6'2" 240 lbs and would make the same choice. But, the Durston is so much longer with better head and foot room (the walls are steeper in those areas) than the Altaplex, it is not even a completion. The design is just better! The Durston will also pitch in tighter locations if you use the alternate pitch where you collapse the vestibules. Additionally, the roof vents make it a little less prone to condensation than other trekking pole tents. Lastly, it is the same weight as the Altaplex if you consider the stakes to pitch it (not counting the trekking pole weight - I am assuming you will use 2 trekking poles no matter what - I know my old knees demand them). You had the Altaplex pitched with 9 stakes and you only need 5 for the Durston, 4 Groundhogs for the corners and 1 shepherd hook for the vestibule. That difference easily makes up for the Durston being 1.0 ounce heavier. Oh, not to mention it is simpler and faster to setup, packs down smaller and is slightly cheaper. They are now orderable on the website so the availability problem is resolved.
Aaron, really nice hearing from you and I can’t thank you enough for all of those points. From the minute I saw Dan Durston’s video from his site of this tent it all made sense to me. There are so many things (as you stated) that just make sense and are missing in most other UL tents. Definitely the smaller footprint. I love my triplex but man when you guy it out it takes a very large camp spot. Many times I can’t guy out one of my vestibules to fit and just hope it doesn’t rain. Love how low you can pitch it and I completely agree that the zpacks tent walls are too high off the ground I’m assuming for better air flow for less confiscation but a lot of splash does get in not to mention cold winds. Love the vents and especially the steep walls near the head and feet which effectively makes it much roomier inside compared to zpacks. I like that inside you will touch the netting not the wet dcf walls as well. I’m not sure if it was a typo but because of the two doors you need 6 stakes not 5 but I agree. I will a few ounces in stake weigh only carrying 4 ground hogs and two Shepard hooks compared to the 12 I carry now for the triplex. I know their available, knew they dropped on the 3rd and have almost bought it every day lol… I may just do it thank you
@@MarmaladeOutdoors I can understand your hesitation, dropping that much on another tent (because it is a little better) is no small consideration. Yea, when I started using the X-mid 2P a couple years ago as a 1 man tent I would carry 2 shepherd hooks (besides the 4 groundhogs), one for each door. But, after thinking about it on a hike a while back I had to ask myself why? Since I was using it as a one man tent I was only ever using one of the doors and the stake is really only there to make the zipper easier (one handed) to open and to hold the short vestibule flap on place when the door is open so it does not fall over your pack when you lean it up against the hiking pole. Practically speaking you never use the other door so you don't need that stake. I do put stuff in that vestibule I just don't undo the zipper since I only use one of the doors whenever I pitch it. If 2 people were using it as a 2P tent then yes I would carry 2 shepherd hooks.
Hey Rich thank you and I’ve really enjoyed mine as well… hopefully I can find something I love as much but slightly smaller and lighter. Thanks for watching
I'm taller at 6' 4" and use the original Altaplex. It has room for me and my medium sized dog. Maybe Zpacks downsized their designs? With respect to your tarp test, I don't think that you gave it anywhere near an adequate evaluation. There are so many more pitches that would give you much better livability. But, in the end you are happy with your decision and that's what is important.
Thank you LoneWolfe and as I said a few of my friends said the same thing. I’ve watched a ton of videos on different set ups so I’m well aware of how flexible a tarp is which is what interested me in it. Sometimes you don’t really know if you will like something until you try it…. In the end it wasn’t for me but as I said I may try it again later in my life…. Thank you for the comment and for watching
Hey Marmalade, was curious about your evaluation of the tarp. Looked like a neat little setup with the bug net. Too bad that didn’t work out so well. We have the Triplex as well and love it. I’m only 5’3”, but I even take it when I go solo. It’s so light, and I love the extra space in my “mansion.” Considered the Plex Solo briefly, but I would lose the benefit of less weight because I would have to take an extra extra pole. I’m short so my trekking poles are not long enough for the Solo. Not worth spending another $600.
Hey Vera nice hearing from you. I think I explained in the video on the pros & cons for the tarp for me. It might be a better option if I wasn’t so big. I could get in and out of it easier and even be able to buy a smaller one but I can’t. Yeah the mansion is a great tent… really enjoy mine!
Cool video! Thanks for sharing your thought journey. There's something to be said for really loving a piece of gear. It makes your trip happier! Sometimes it's worth the extra ounces. I look forward to seeing how my gear choices pan out on my section hike. I know if this long distance thing becomes my "thing" that I'll want to make adjustments to go lighter. Let the journey begin! 😊
Great video! I’ve always used the Zpacks Duplex but recently bought the Plex Solo and I love it. I use the Duplex on shorter trips when I bring more luxury items and use the Plex Solo on longer trips when I want to be lighter and leaner~
Great ‘tent searching’ video. I’m pretty simple when it comes to gear. If ain’t broken, don’t fix it. You have always loved the triplex. Maybe you could find another area to reduce weight?
Hey thank you and I agree. They either make tents too small or too big. I want to invent an ultralight 1 1/2 man tent… it would sell really well but you’re right I’m very happy with the triplex so far yes I have been cutting weight in other areas
Thank you G-Man I appreciate it. Yes I sometimes educate or share what I know but I really like that people share their opinions and experience in the comments which really helps everyone!
My friend who has been on the PCT the last week and a half has ditched his tent which is very similar to the Alta plex due to the same reason - condensation on the inside has soaked everything as he moves around. He's going with a larger tent to help keep stuff dry.
Thanks yeah, whether it’s a tarp or tent there’s great value to each one but so difficult to find one thing that checks off all the boxes for sure. And you’re welcome I hoped I saved you some money lol
Considering all the options available, I still think the triplex is a hard choice to beat for you. For 1.5 lbs, you get enough room to be comfortable even with your height. To save 8-10 ounces you have to sacrifice a huge amount of comfort and functionality, plus you have to be up close and personal with the wet interior walls when there’s condensation. Speaking of condensation, you mentioned that your quilt got wet inside the trash compactor bag when you pulled it over the footbox and slept. That’s definitely condensation from your skin’s transpiration. You’re probably sleeping a little too warm. This also contributes to how much condensation you have on the tent walls in the morning. Some of it is obviously from your breath, but some of it comes from your skin as well. This will make your quilt damp and also condense on the tent walls. I struggle with this too because I like to be on the warm side when sleeping, but even though I’m not outright sweating inside my quilt, I still give off enough moisture to dampen the quilt and cover the inside of the tent with condensation.
Yes it is the NXT, I think I may have said that in this video but not sure. Already filmed a video about my new mattress and differences in it vs. what I had so look for that very soon. I have a few questions for you if you have a minute. Are you still wearing the Topo Athletic shoes? If so, do you still like them? Are they true to size? Any thoughts you can offer would be helpful, thanks.
Hey Greg nice hearing from you and thank you for the question. If it’s cool I’d like to save your question so I can use it and answer it on one of my “what I’ve learned on the pct” episodes. Cheers
Have you looked at the Xmid Pro 1 or some of the Tarptents?
Yes I’m very interested in the x-mid pro 1… very intriguing tent.
@@MarmaladeOutdoors It just came in stock yesterday.
