Interview: Thom Brennaman reflects on the past, looks towards the future

  • Опубліковано 11 сер 2021
  • "I made a comment earlier tonight that, I guess, went out over the air... That I'm deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there... I can't tell you how much I say from the very bottom of my heart I am so very very sorry. I don't know if I'll be putting this headset on again."
And that was the last time Thom Brennaman would put on a headset in the Reds broadcast booth after he was caught on a hot mic uttering an anti-gay slur.
Now, one of the most familiar faces and voices in Cincinnati sports broadcasting is looking ahead to the future: bit.ly/3AGxGsl

I pride myself and think of myself as, a man of faith, as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a homerun. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'll be putting on this headset again. Whether that be for the Reds or my bosses at FOX

I don't know if people still really care about this, but if he's volunteering his time and actually helping out the lgbtq community and doing the right things, then time to let it go. Was looking for the clip "as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run… and so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame" as Castellanos seems to get hits when something else is going on and just learned about this Thom Brennaman issue, Kevin Pillar when he was with the Blue Jays went through a similar incident and he was offered a path to redemption he apologized and volunteered to sit out a game and pay a fine before the team asked him to and made a donation to the local LGQT group and threw out a first pitch with a gay person, the Reds suck put people need to be offered a chance at redemption

I'm transgender and take this seriously. I don't know what's in his heart, but he's saying the right things, he's doing the right things. And we all make mistakes. I said something stupid before to a friend many years ago about someone he was talking to on the phone and the person on the phone heard what I said. I say forgive him and perhaps I would like to see him get more opportunities to get his life back to where it was.

@Chronic Blast I don't know exactly where you're coming from but if your view is that he was punished for not showing support for the LGBTQ community, I don't think that's the case. You don't have to support the community and you don't have to have a particular point of view. You don't have to like this or that. You can disagree. You can form groups and be politically active and try to change things the way you'd like to have them be. You can talk to friends about your feelings. The problem is that he used a hateful word on the job.

@@supermoneyball420 I've seen this point made elsewhere here. I'm not sure what your point. I'll take a guess and say that you feel his apology was not sincere (or he didn't appreciate the gravity of his insensitive remark) because he was giving priority to reporting the live events of a sports contest. I would guess that reporting the live events is the primary task a person in his position must do above all else. I was thinking that Thom was going to be professional to the end, fulfilling his primary task while giving his closing remarks. I am uncertain what was in his heart at the time. Perhaps, he was only sorry because he got caught and embarrassed. I will always be uncertain what is in his heart but behavior wise he has said the right things and done the right things, not that it was necessary for him to show support for the LGBTQ community (not liking us is fine, hating on us is not). I don't know what else you expect from someone that made, in my view, a comment that could contribute to discrimination and even violence against the LGBTQ community. Anyway, I don't feel sorry for Thom that there are people like you who feel the way you feel. He's the one who dug the hole for himself and I respect how you feel about it.

I can absolutely guarantee you this was not a one time thing, he said fags with confidence, with his whole chest, with a familiarity that can only be built with decades. This was the one time he’s been caught. And I can guarantee in some way or another it’s caused real harm to people. The public was not responsible for his firing, it was himself and the PR department getting rid of a liability. So don’t try to paint the guy as saint that had a moment of weakness, That was him in his most candid. He deserves a second chance no doubt but he also deserved what happened because in the end no one but him is at fault.

He keeps trying to frame it as "just a word." Yes, the word is often used as a generic insult. 100 years from now, when religion dies off and homophobia is virtually non-existent, that will be the predominant definition. But Brennaman is pretending like he wasn't being explicitly homophobic in his usage of the word. We all heard it; who's he trying to fool?

Interesting. Does this apply for everything else? Like if you see/hear someone saying the N word, you shouldn't speak on it unless you're black?

Let me share with you how the world works.
You have zero power to say who does and does not have an opinion.
As a heterosexual I believe none of us know if he really is sorry or just sorry he got caught.
But thats true of every public figure...are the holding negative views in about lqbtg ONLY because they know they would lose their jobs???
      We do not know.

That's why you never, ever apologize. He apologized and literally said "I beg for your forgiveness." He was fired and cancelled anyway. At least go out with some dignity. He doesn't like gays, be a man and admit it.

He is a bigot, and a bit of an actor. If he says that's not him, why did he use that slander? Can't take it back. That was his profession.

It is hard to wrap your mind around the weight of what he said when you are white, heterosexual, and privileged with 'normalcy' as it applies to the ideologies we learned growing up in a country where racism and hate was smoothed over as 'normal'. We do make mistakes as humans, I get that. And with them come consequences when we are caught. He was a public speaker and the price for hurling an offensive term the deprocates an entire community of the audience, was losing the mic. Sure he deserves to live life, albeit a different one from the one he sabotaged. Whether the mic was on or not is moot, the fact was that he felt like he could use that term and use it with the gusto, the 'punch', the angst he said it with, says everything for me. I just don't feel sorry for the guy.

One of the most important parts of his job is to not say inappropriate things on air. There are thousands of announcers who wouldn’t say that ever. He should be replaced by a non-homophobic announcer who is competent enough to not say inappropriate things on air.

Dude shut up. You make more out of it than it was. So what he said the word fag? Saying one word doesn't make you "homophobic" people make mistakes and say things without thinking. We are all guilty of it.

@@smurfette1509 He said he knew it was over the minute he said it. Now he's saying cancel culture is selective. Huh? How can it be selective if he knew it was over for him? It'd be over for everyone who says what he said on air.

@@tien90802 Yeah, okay.👍 He made it clear that his view was not an excuse, alibi, or whoa is me. He said he said it and earned it. I think those comments reflect someone who knows his argument is a weak one or at the very least makes him look bad.
If I recall, I chose to forgive him based on his behavior/actions after the incident and the knowledge that we are all not perfect. In a time of increased culture wars it's becoming more difficult to forgive but I'll maintain my position. I'm certainly not crying for him if he never gets to broadcast big league games anymore.

@@smurfette1509 There's no need to forgive as he's not being punished anymore. If he was a bartender, he'd still have a job. He's just in the wrong job to say what he said and he lost his job. That's it. Nothing to forgive. That's just the reality of the profession that he chose to be in.
It doesn't make him a bad person. It just made him an unemployable sports announcer.
