Interview: Thom Brennaman reflects on the past, looks towards the future
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 сер 2021
- "I made a comment earlier tonight that, I guess, went out over the air... That I'm deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there... I can't tell you how much I say from the very bottom of my heart I am so very very sorry. I don't know if I'll be putting this headset on again."
And that was the last time Thom Brennaman would put on a headset in the Reds broadcast booth after he was caught on a hot mic uttering an anti-gay slur.
Now, one of the most familiar faces and voices in Cincinnati sports broadcasting is looking ahead to the future: bit.ly/3AGxGsl
I pride myself and think of myself as, a man of faith, as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a homerun. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'll be putting on this headset again. Whether that be for the Reds or my bosses at FOX
Made me lawl
Interviewer - Thom if you could sum it all up with one word…
Thom - fa..
Interviewer - wait, never mind
I want to apologize for the people who sign my paycheck.
@@mm6461 Thom: Fa.... Ahhh you almost got me!
They weren't mad he said it but mad it was on air lol
I don't know if people still really care about this, but if he's volunteering his time and actually helping out the lgbtq community and doing the right things, then time to let it go. Not saying give him back his job but don't blacklist him. People make mistakes and he's doing a hell of a lot more to fix those than the average guy
No one ever cared
Home run Castellanos ….
@@Iwasthewalrus A lot of people did, you're just a bigot.
"Blacklist" really. Smh. Seems racist to me.
Bet yes, he shouldn't be black balled.
I'm sorry, but he should be brought back.
Marge Schott would have given him a raise.
Well I’m not condoning what he said but Kobe Bryant also said the f word on tv and he was still loved immensely. Maybe we should forgive this guy too.
@sweeney using that word doesn't make it a hate sentence? I mean Kobe wasn't defining the word lol he used it.
Kobe was black he gets a pass.
Fuck is not a derogatory term, genius. Please tell me you’re joking.

Was looking for the clip "as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run… and so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame" as Castellanos seems to get hits when something else is going on and just learned about this Thom Brennaman issue, Kevin Pillar when he was with the Blue Jays went through a similar incident and he was offered a path to redemption he apologized and volunteered to sit out a game and pay a fine before the team asked him to and made a donation to the local LGQT group and threw out a first pitch with a gay person, the Reds suck put people need to be offered a chance at redemption
to be fair, john sadak, his successor, is SO good
I'm transgender and take this seriously. I don't know what's in his heart, but he's saying the right things, he's doing the right things. And we all make mistakes. I said something stupid before to a friend many years ago about someone he was talking to on the phone and the person on the phone heard what I said. I say forgive him and perhaps I would like to see him get more opportunities to get his life back to where it was.
@Chronic Blast I don't know exactly where you're coming from but if your view is that he was punished for not showing support for the LGBTQ community, I don't think that's the case. You don't have to support the community and you don't have to have a particular point of view. You don't have to like this or that. You can disagree. You can form groups and be politically active and try to change things the way you'd like to have them be. You can talk to friends about your feelings. The problem is that he used a hateful word on the job.
@Chronic Blast Well, I wrote a response but deleted it. I don't think there's much to say. Thanks for sharing your views, though.
@@smurfette1509 yeah when someone starts going into some biblical end times shit over some guy in ohio losing his job then its time to terminate the conversation

@@supermoneyball420 I've seen this point made elsewhere here. I'm not sure what your point. I'll take a guess and say that you feel his apology was not sincere (or he didn't appreciate the gravity of his insensitive remark) because he was giving priority to reporting the live events of a sports contest. I would guess that reporting the live events is the primary task a person in his position must do above all else. I was thinking that Thom was going to be professional to the end, fulfilling his primary task while giving his closing remarks. I am uncertain what was in his heart at the time. Perhaps, he was only sorry because he got caught and embarrassed. I will always be uncertain what is in his heart but behavior wise he has said the right things and done the right things, not that it was necessary for him to show support for the LGBTQ community (not liking us is fine, hating on us is not). I don't know what else you expect from someone that made, in my view, a comment that could contribute to discrimination and even violence against the LGBTQ community. Anyway, I don't feel sorry for Thom that there are people like you who feel the way you feel. He's the one who dug the hole for himself and I respect how you feel about it.
I think that is people spend there while life finding things to be upset about, it’s then who have the real problems. There is way too much real hate and horrible things going on to continue to destroy the careers of people who have a slip of the tongue one time.
I can absolutely guarantee you this was not a one time thing, he said fags with confidence, with his whole chest, with a familiarity that can only be built with decades. This was the one time he’s been caught. And I can guarantee in some way or another it’s caused real harm to people. The public was not responsible for his firing, it was himself and the PR department getting rid of a liability. So don’t try to paint the guy as saint that had a moment of weakness, That was him in his most candid. He deserves a second chance no doubt but he also deserved what happened because in the end no one but him is at fault.
@@nunyabusiness8000 oh I’m so glad you have known him his entire life and know every single word he has said. How can we please you, Holy One? How can we do better, One that Knows All????

Kinda cringe actually. He said nothing wrong, and should have stood by it

What's he sorry about?

“If you had to sum up what the last year has been like for you in ONE WORD” really 🤦 😆
He keeps trying to frame it as "just a word." Yes, the word is often used as a generic insult. 100 years from now, when religion dies off and homophobia is virtually non-existent, that will be the predominant definition. But Brennaman is pretending like he wasn't being explicitly homophobic in his usage of the word. We all heard it; who's he trying to fool?
I'm just glad no one has the recordings of me on xbox live when I was a teenager.
If we fired everyone in the world for saying stupid things nobody would have a job.
This!!!! 💯💯💯💯💯
But we fire every sports announcer who says this on air... And seems like we still have sports announcers.
Should never have been said but sounds likes he's really sorry and working hard to make amends
I do say bring him back to the Reds...he has earned a second chance..
I just wonder since Thom has gotten saved and rehabed for saying the word, that he will take up a relationship with Joe Buck in the near future.
I searched his name up and got this also that was pretty awesome
Happy that he's doing great work. He shouldn't have said what he said, but he's been properly reprimanded. I hope he continues to do the great work.
Nice to see Thom Brennaman come out of the dark and appear in public to overcome his worst nightmare since he accidentally blurted out a gay slur on live TV. True. He knew he made a mistake and apologized for his actions. Best luck, Brennaman. 👍
Did you say true to something you said?
I thought he said “hag Capitol of the world “ and was referring to Nancy Pelosi.
The FAB capital of the world. London, swinging 60's. Woooooooooo
Bring him back!
Not to Reds baseball please
Hopefully he returns to NFL within a few years or by 2025
2:08 Im glad he’s been endorsed by the Eljibeeta community
Ray St. Clair Roofing also stripped your sponsorship
Wow. He must be the best high school football announcer in the country.
Thom said a no no word and is now castrated for it. Weak and pathetic.
He was obviously joking, but in the end words only hurt those that allow them too.
You don't understand the history behind the word.
With all the Help Wanted Signs going up everywhere and the ads in the paper and on line , employment should not be that difficult for Thom . He does have his degree from Ohio U . alot better than somebody out here looking for work that only has a high school diploma.
His diploma means nothing compared to his lengthy work resume. He'll be fine.
He was treated way too harshly..ok suspend him for two weeks and move on...hopefully another MLB team will give him a chance he is very talented covering MLB games....
I agreed with his statement
Maybe one of his kids come out of the closet and he’s able to shift his perspective on this here issue of the capitol city that we’re speaking about.
OMG ! Yes he’s paid his penalty. Time to move on . He is one of the alltime best announcers and the sports world is for the worst without him . Please someone use some common sense and bring Thom back !
"Double Header"????? Hilarious
A blessing? OK. I guess whenever anyone needs a blessing, they should just blast out anti-gay slurs for everyone to hear.
Isn't that word in England mean cigarette to
Yep. He could have just said "I heard this was the cigarette capital of the world"
Love Thom Brennaman.
Podcast drop was slick
He's a pro. Hence why he was on television for 30 years
Michael Vick made dogs kill each other and since then he has done more for dogs than any celebrity. I say forgive not forget. The guy is doing the right things.
This is pure comedy gold. Just imagine you just keep that to yourself lol. All he had to do but now he has to live his entire life convincing the world of bla bla bla lol
Damn he seems like a nice guy he said one bad word give him a second chance
Seems. Lol
So the guy seems super nice when he knows he’s on camera and uses gay slurs when he doesn’t think he’s being recorded. Doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out which version is closer to his true self
Ya I also tink it was just a word and he should be forgiven, as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a homerun. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame.

Not a wimp for apologizing. But I feel he feels he needs to take it too far

Thom Brennaman is 1,000x better than the drone guy who replaced him. A massive aspect to love is FOREGIVENESS and allowing people to gain REDEMPTION. Cmon, love is love.
Co-opting slogans is a super underrated move!
He said a word the way guys speak at bars?.. No big deal?..
what he said is a non-starter....let these thin skinned people grow a spine already, sick of the cry-babies who aren't owed a damn thing. There are no perfect people in the world but Thom Brennaman is darn close to one !!
This is what a Maoist Struggle Session looks like.
Getting fired was a blessing? Keep telling yourself that as you're missing the $1 million paycheck.
Dude is pathetic.
That was super gay of him to say that
I saw my son in fasix capital of the world playing baseball ⚾️ 😂
He looks like a car salesman
To be fair tho Kansas City is definitely one of the capitals of the world for that gay💩
He deserves a second chance
Well he can go to work for the Trump campaign
Thom did nothing wrong
Lol, being homophobic helped me out is basically what he is saying, haha.
One of the cigarette capital's of the world
Good way to retire like who cares lol
as a bisexual, if you are homophobic or not, I am not here to change your mind. but if you are straight and cis, you do not have the right to speak on this matter as if it affects you. you cannot forgive him since what he said does not affect you. I think he has educated himself and done the work to become a better person. it just frustrates me when people who are not a part of the lgbtq+ community speak on these matters like they have the right to say whether or not he should be forgiven.
I worked with 2 lesbians that were awesome people, they joked themselves with homophobic slurs.
My body my choice, I will forgive him thanks
Interviewer - Thom if you could sum it all up in one word…
Thom - fa………..
Interviewer - wait nevermind
Interesting. Does this apply for everything else? Like if you see/hear someone saying the N word, you shouldn't speak on it unless you're black?
Let me share with you how the world works.
You have zero power to say who does and does not have an opinion.
As a heterosexual I believe none of us know if he really is sorry or just sorry he got caught.
But thats true of every public figure...are the holding negative views in about lqbtg ONLY because they know they would lose their jobs???
We do not know.
That's why you never, ever apologize. He apologized and literally said "I beg for your forgiveness." He was fired and cancelled anyway. At least go out with some dignity. He doesn't like gays, be a man and admit it.
So much for freedom of speech
Nobody kept him from saying it. But his boss has every right to fire him if it doesn't support the brand.
He is a bigot, and a bit of an actor. If he says that's not him, why did he use that slander? Can't take it back. That was his profession.
I agree that we’ll never know but at least be grateful he’s been donating money
It's not him. It's a momentary lapse
So you’ve never said anything hurtful toward anyone? Great work my friend.
Crazy world, so the guy said gay! Tough up people! Don’t be so soft!
It is hard to wrap your mind around the weight of what he said when you are white, heterosexual, and privileged with 'normalcy' as it applies to the ideologies we learned growing up in a country where racism and hate was smoothed over as 'normal'. We do make mistakes as humans, I get that. And with them come consequences when we are caught. He was a public speaker and the price for hurling an offensive term the deprocates an entire community of the audience, was losing the mic. Sure he deserves to live life, albeit a different one from the one he sabotaged. Whether the mic was on or not is moot, the fact was that he felt like he could use that term and use it with the gusto, the 'punch', the angst he said it with, says everything for me. I just don't feel sorry for the guy.
Good lord could you hate yourself anymore?
I was referring to him, not m y self. I haven't checked the 'hetero' box since the year 1642.
Interviewer - Thom if you could sum it all up in one word…

I do feel sorry for the guy. He said something terrible momentarily. he didn't kill anybody
You get that hot take from The View?
he deserves his job back
One of the most important parts of his job is to not say inappropriate things on air. There are thousands of announcers who wouldn’t say that ever. He should be replaced by a non-homophobic announcer who is competent enough to not say inappropriate things on air.
Dude shut up. You make more out of it than it was. So what he said the word fag? Saying one word doesn't make you "homophobic" people make mistakes and say things without thinking. We are all guilty of it.
@Clean Sheets I appreciate the spirit behind your comments and I don't think you're wrong (he did screw up big time) but I see things differently. We all make mistakes. Even presidents have been caught saying things into a hot mic.
@@smurfette1509 He said he knew it was over the minute he said it. Now he's saying cancel culture is selective. Huh? How can it be selective if he knew it was over for him? It'd be over for everyone who says what he said on air.
@@tien90802 Yeah, okay.👍 He made it clear that his view was not an excuse, alibi, or whoa is me. He said he said it and earned it. I think those comments reflect someone who knows his argument is a weak one or at the very least makes him look bad.
If I recall, I chose to forgive him based on his behavior/actions after the incident and the knowledge that we are all not perfect. In a time of increased culture wars it's becoming more difficult to forgive but I'll maintain my position. I'm certainly not crying for him if he never gets to broadcast big league games anymore.
@@smurfette1509 There's no need to forgive as he's not being punished anymore. If he was a bartender, he'd still have a job. He's just in the wrong job to say what he said and he lost his job. That's it. Nothing to forgive. That's just the reality of the profession that he chose to be in.
It doesn't make him a bad person. It just made him an unemployable sports announcer.
