Watch the version of Petula Clark singing this song two days after Karen Carpenter died. She also sang it at the Academy Awards for that year. It will definitely bring it some emotions. 🙏💖💓😓
Jimmy was the most gentle soul. It hurts to hear this guy on piano belittle And make light of Jimmy. Jimmy had a mountain of talent that was always used by many as their own. He never put up a fuss about not being recognized for the super star he was
I totally missed that this classic Oscar winning song was written by one of the most underrated singer/song writers of all time from legendary band Bread! Mr. Griffins great voice, staggering humility, shy, and charming manner only adds to his stellar character, very moving, RIP.
When my husband was on his last, dying from melanoma at age 25, this song came over the radio. I caught him crying. We had only been married 4 years and had 3 children. We still had so much more living. There just wasn't enough time left.
God bless you and your family. Indeed your husbands loss was way too early. I've lost three siblings way too early also. It makes us feel guilty we're alive some times.
I remember Jimmy setting at the piano at a friend's house singing this for them. We were doing a demo out there at the studio . And i almost cried . I always do when i think and miss my buddy James A Griffin.
We saw him and the rest of the guys in Bristol in UK ('97) and James sounded so good and David Gates said after he sang that Jimmy had a cold and still sounded fabulous after all those years... so sad that he died so young... 61 is no age to die
I worked for jimmy in the mid 70's -we were taking out some boxes to the trash that were full of papers...inside I found a page with jimmys scribled music and notes to this song...I sent it to my sister and she framed it...God Bless you jimmy , love, Robinboybilly
just read he has left us im so upset i met him outside glasgow apollo and he was so so beautiful handsome i could hardly speak i had all the bread albums may you rest in eternal peace James i never knew you wrote this song for the carpenters what a god given amazing talent you will never be forgotten rest in peace beautiful one xxx
Maureen Spratt - It’s cool you got to meet him. It wasn’t written specifically for The Carpenters but for a film called ‘Lovers And Other Strangers’ which is most likely how Richard Carpenter heard it. The Academy Award was for Best Original Song but The Carpenters were not allowed to sing it since they weren’t in the film. Petula Clark sang it at Karen’s request. Fred Garlin wrote the music and Robb Royer and Jimmy Griffin (both from Bread) wrote the lyrics.
The gatekeepers of culture didn't want us to have music that brought us all together and made us feel good. The divide and conquer globalist agenda had no use for love between men & women, black & whites or old and young any longer.
My first two major rock concerts in my teens were Bread/Steely Dan and then The Carpenters. Can't believe I saw such talent. Jimmy Griffin was an amazing part of Bread. I didn't know he wrote that song.
I didn't realize that James was this accomplished...unfortunately David Gates received all the attention during the Bread years. R.I.P. James. Wish I would have known sooner that you were this talented.
I don’t think it’s “unfortunate” that David Gates received “all the attention”. Gates was an extraordinarily, almost generational talent, both his voice and his guitar playing. Jimmy was also very gifted. Nothing unfortunate here at all.
He also wrote songs for restless heart, and other country artist he was in the Remington that went number two in the charts and a very dear friend of mine
For me ,this version was the most beautiful .I never get tired listening James Griffin songs,, specially Games of magic ,so beautiful..... thank you for sharing !
God, he's so nonchalant, and he just glides through this song, standing there in command of everything! Oh Lord...why was I so dumb as a tween/teen and didn't know squat about him?
Wow, nice! never knew who wrote the song. I learn a lot on youtube. This stuff brings back memories. Hearing The Carpenters and Bread on AM radio. Life sure was so good back in the day.
I love this! Thank you for posting this and others of James Griffin. I've loved his amazing voice since first hearing him sing with Bread in the early 70's. Very sad that he is no longer with us. Happy to see him on You Tube and that he went on to do so much more with his music and wonderful voice!
Great song! Second verse, same ad the first; breaks the standard model of songwriting. My music teacher (many years ago) told me to know the rules before you break them. One of my fave songs of all time.
i wish i can live at my mother's time,,this song is my mom favorite song, but if i can go with my moms time i wish my wife too,,so we can enjoy the same songs..
worked with the best no-ego mentor in other studio sessions, who permeated creative juices throughout the creative community; freedom felt jaundra. Thanks, Jimmie :-)
I love James vocal on this. his version is sweeter and simpler than Karen's. Richard carpenter loved that full orchestra sound in production but this is such the real deal rip James you in my opinion were the soul in bread. wish you got the recognition you truly deserved. phenomenal and with David now that's magic.
serendipity intervened...who knows...Jimmy Griffin could have been the main singer in any group? Bread was better with him ( they kneaded him...sorry couldn't resist)..he was even better as a solo.. thanks for all the songs and memories !!
...she's in NM and I havent heard from her in a pretty long time....I know she still has it though. I got to work around Jimmy quite a bit at his home in Memphis...it was a trip.
We went to jr sr highschool together sweet soul an humble... he ask if he an some guys could perform for my 16th bday party! Who knew.. wish I had pictures! 60s
wow how do professional ^^usicians do that? to be able to take a song and tweak the song a little so it fits their voice without ruining the ^^elody of the song? I LOVE His take on it and his version. I always wondered how a guy would sound like if they were to sing this beautiful song fro^^ karen. I wanna learn how to do that.
I am not at all familiar with the singing group BREAD❤ ....❤all I know is that I found out in the year 1971 when i was a very young 5-year old❤ tiny- tot running around the house 🏠 playing with barbie dolls, and watching Scooby Doo and eating ice cream cones 🎉 that the singing group BREAD were out there writing and performing luv songs ❤.."For All We Know" ❤ my #1 all time favorite song congratulations🎉 on the Oscar award win oh my goodness what an honor it must have been ❤❤❤ ❤

@furgurl - I have this song on a old U.K. Plexium Records, but they say who wrote this;but not who sings it.It is not Karen Carpenter,or Shirley Bassey.Maybe you remember it?It is sung by a female she whispers some of the lines and has beautiful accostic guitar plucking.1971 record.
Holy feck! Didn't know this Carpenters hit was his song. Was everythhing he di effortless or what!? What a voice... I prefer him to David Gates AND Karen Carpenter!
Rusty Mr. Gates had a great voice, but to say he had a superior voice to Mr, Griffin is plainly subjective. Mr. Griffin had a great voice, with different and interesting qualities, ‘superior’ doesn’t come into it.
I am reading their biography "Bread: A Sweet Surrender" and because the first major hit was a David Gates lead, their label started pushing similar songs. If Jimmy had been the one with the first hit, they would have pushed him out front instead. Also, Jimmy was more into the rock and progressive songs. But since their fans started associating them with Gates' ballads, it was harder to sell those types of songs; even though they were good at them, too.
@headacherack Do you know who sings this song from 1971.I have a U.K. Plexium record. The record only states the writers name but does not say who sings it.I know it is not Karen Carpenter or Shirley Bassey. It has only acc guitar plucking and a female singer. She whispers some of the lines.I heard this version just before Karen Carpenters rendition.
Wow. Sang it better than Karen. Both great singers though. Sorry to hear Jim passed away years ago. Fantastic singer, guitar and writer, We'll all miss him as an essential part of Bread and as a lovely man.
One of the albums in which he had a lot of good songs is; THE GUITAR MAN. unfortunately this song by David Gates; over shadowed all From Jimmy. So sad that most of the band are gone. Only David still standing.
I miss this man so much I don’t have words for it. He was a very special friend of mine.

Many of my Bread favourites are in fact Jimmy’s songs -
London Bridge, Games of Magic, Dream Lady, Friends and Lovers, Daughter- fantastic voice ❤
Jimmy Griffin was the whole package, and a gift to all of us. This is gorgeous.

Jimmy...
Thank you for writing this song. This is my all time favorite Carpenters hit.
Music just doesn't get any better than this. What ever happened to modern music that it no longer compares?
It has been overly commercialized. It's all about the flash and cash and not about the art.
The gatekeepers of culture didn't want us to have music that brought us all together and made us feel good. The divide and conquer globalist agenda had no use for love between men & women, black & whites or old and young any longer.
It took me a lifetime to realize what a perfect song this is! It's as profound as any zen quote!
My first two major rock concerts in my teens were Bread/Steely Dan and then The Carpenters. Can't believe I saw such talent. Jimmy Griffin was an amazing part of Bread. I didn't know he wrote that song.

awesome he should have sang all of Breads tunes. He is he better singer by far. AND I LIKE AVID GATES. But this guy really sings.
This rendition of the song is much better than Karen capenters it was his song and what a beautiful voice
best co-worker
drhoobr It's John Ford Coley.
Talk of Karen Carptenter singing this song not a patch on Jimmy Griffin s version
He should have sung lead more on the bread hits
Bread was James and David and other 2 great members
Holy feck! Didn't know this Carpenters hit was his song. Was everythhing he di effortless or what!? What a voice... I prefer him to David Gates AND Karen Carpenter!
Whoah! This guy had a great voice, what happened? Why didnt he sing some of breads songs??
Actually he did. Just check the credits.
Luis Diaz Good spot, I should’ve checked out some of their other less well known songs
