If Triple HGH didn't tear yet another quad, we wouldn't have had all these great moments in wrestling. Maybe Jericho should or shouldn't have gone over on both Rock and Austin in one night, but no one can tell me that he didn't work his ass off in those matches. And if you remember, the Rock vs. Jericho match ended, and Austin came out not even 5 seconds later. So, Chris Jericho wrestled the Rock for 20 minutes and went straight into a match against Austin.
Even if it was not a perfect night it was still a great run. I loved how he carried his belts. I forget when they unified them into one, but Jericho carried both
As someone who watched it live, I think the lackluster reaction to Jericho's win was because virtually everyone expected to see Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock (the BIGGEST wrestling names at the time) face off in the finals to not only see who would become the first ever undisputed champion, but to finally see the conclusion to their feud that began at WM17 earlier that year (arguably the biggest WM ever). Austin vs Jericho was just massively underwhelming in comparison.
Yep my thoughts exactly. A rematch from X7 was the obvious way to end the year, and when Jericho defeated the Rock everyone in the arena and myself watching just felt the enthusiasm just drain away and just didn't feel like caring anymore....I actually stopped watching wwf for a while until the later half of 2002 because Jericho wining was so deflating
In retrospect it should of been literally anyone BUT Jericho. Angle, Austin or Rock all would of been much better options. And that's no disrespect to Y2J. I just don't think he was ready at this point in his career The lackluster Mania main event with HHH kinda proved that.
Y2J was made to be a joke when he had Stephanie as his manager all simply a joke oppenent culminating with a grand Triple Lame coronation at Wrestlemania....which no remembers or cares because well...HHH....and of course Rock Hogan. In the end, if they were attempting to make new stars put the First Ever moniker it probably shouldve been Angle.
Shoulda been Angle. He was on fire at the time. But it worked w8th Y2J. Jericho is not just a great worker but he is also aces on the mic which is why it was able to work.
Jericho deserved it. Honestly, HHH being unavailable was a great opportunity. It gave a supremely talented superstar a chance on the main stage. Jericho will always be more compelling to watch than HHH.
I liked Y2J but this was when WWE started paying way too much attention to the "smart marks". People who wanted the best workers to be World Champion like Jericho, Benoit, Eddie etc despite not understanding that being the best worker doesn't mean you deserve to be champion
Face Jericho defeating Triple H on Raw was a missed opportunity to capitalise on his popularity at the time. Heel Jericho was just never on the same level working with talent far superior to him by 2001.
I almost wish Stone Cold would have won the undisputed title. I think that would have lead to him and Triple H headlining WrestleMania 18 and that would have been cool to see.
It’s hard to say who should’ve won that night. The Rock and Austin didn’t really need to win the championship because both guys are on top and the company needed guys like Jericho or Angle to lead the company especially because less then a year at this point both Rock and Austin are gone.
The main event of Mania 18 should of been Austin beating Jericho for the title. Triple H was coming off a major injury and had no business being put in that spot. The match was terrible. Pushing Austin down the card was dumb. He was still way over.
@@AD-ur1fk Hogan Austin would have been a terrible match. It would have been a clash of styles. I think Austin knew that and that's why he didn't wanna wrestle Hogan.
@@kamfisher1714 Brock Lesnar beat The Rock and The Undertaker without cheating. As a matter of fact early in his career, Brock destroyed his opponents with dominating strength and would often kick out of his opponents finishers!!

@@donbrewer3904 Jericho was a good entertainer and an excellent intercontinental champion. But beating Stone Cold and The Rock on the same night was like sci-fi to me. Jericho winning the undisputed title was like when an underdog sports team wins a major championship. Nobody expected it. Nobody at the time saw Jericho pinning the Rock and Austin back to back.
I remember watching it live, 2001 Jericho was just not and has never been on that same level of a Rock or Austin. His entire first run was forgettable from his first defence against Rock to Triple H’s defeat of him at WMX8. He’s like a top tier midcarder, he can have a decent match with anyone but he’s never been that top guy. Even now it could be argued he’s only in that top position because everyone else from his era is retired, dead or just not involved in wrestling anymore. He’s also slowly turning into modern day Hogan keeping newer talent down to satisfy his own ego and put himself over. The irony of it all is he’s basically become everything he hated himself about WCW 🤷🏾♂️
Still remember watching this match for the first time and it blew my mind Jericho beat both the Rock and Stone Cold in the same night.
