Northern BC RV Adventure: Muncho Lake, Liard Hot Springs & Wildlife!

- In the 4th and last installment of our van trip to Northern BC, we spend time in a cabin at the Northern Rockies Lodge as well as a picture-perfect lakeside campsite at the Provincial Park at Muncho Lake, and enjoy a dip in the natural pools at Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park. Enroute we see tons of wildlife and enjoy some hiking and paddling.

Interesting fact about Liard Hot Springs ... it's the site of North America's worst Black Bear attack back in the '90s. It occurred on the boardwalk of the upper spring (now closed to the public). Last time I was there, there was no fence around the campground. Long drive to get there from Toronto but was a definite stop that was planned. I also camped at Muncho Lake and kayaked there too but went the opposite direction from your excursion. There are two main herds of Bison with the other one further north - they, literally blocked the bridge at Liard River. Good video! Cheers, Steve
Folks were still telling stories of the bear attack; but the electric fencing around the campsite looks quite recent. We loved the Muncho Lake area! Appreciate the comment! 🚐

It is a wonderful area! Quite remote, with very long distances between towns and often no cell coverage between. We enjoyed! We saw bear, moose, cariboo, mountain goats and bison! Like you, enjoyed seeing the two moose the most! We may do a short ‘recap video’ to flag a few highlights for us and to note a few key points for anyone else who may consider.

Did you "feel" winter coming on with the trees, animals/yearlings, air, etc. A wonderful sensation. With our travels in the US Rockies I have always enjoyed that feeling! Thank you for sharing another wonderful video!!
We had to have our Thule step replaced! I hit a "gator," a term for a torn off truck tire tread lying on a 70 mph interstate during rush hour traffic. The step was crushed.
We always enjoy that transition period as well, but this was still a bit early as we were there at the end of August, but noticed more on the way home. Cold at night however. Sorry to hear about your step; must have been quite scary!! We had the cover underneath the step actually fall off sometime later but we spotted it in the mirror. Stopped and fixed... making sure it was more secure this time (even added some Gorilla tape just in case). Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching! 🚐

A feast for your eyes seeing the spectacular countryside and wildlife, what an adventure, looks reasonably quiet and peaceful. Jealous is an understatement, especially the “Sluice Juice and The Pasta Dish” 🍺😁👍😋🚐
Yes, quite remote so not too busy, but such a beautiful area! And we enjoy a simple meal paired with a local beverage when we can (albeit the craft beer itself had travelled north over half the Province with us). Hope all is well! 🍺🚐

We did that trip in 1995. I think that we stayed at the same cabins in Muncie Lake. The hot springs still look much the same. The campground wasn’t fenced at that time. We watched Park Rangers actually wrestling with a young black bear. A few years later a lady was killed by a bear in the campground.
It was a great trip. We hope to do it again. How were the roads.

Thank you! It is a wonderful area! Roads were fine (other than a few kms of construction). The fence felt unusual, but it would keep people from wandering into wildlife areas and keep wildlife out of the campground.

I have watched your videos since the beginning and so amazed at your beautiful scenery you can enjoy and the large camping spots. I have only been to Ontario but your country is beautiful.

Great video, as always! We were hoping to do a similar trip this sumer, but COVID and the fire situation prevented it. Hopefuly next year. You chave given us increases incentive.
We actually delayed our trip for the same reasons and ended up enjoying a trip to northern vancouver island instead. We decided later to give it a try and it all worked out well. While wildfires were certainly an issue, with our route (and timing perhaps) we managed to avoid any problems. Let’s hope for a better year ahead (though it might be a bit busier)! If you go, you will enjoy!

It is wonderful! Once you get past PG (about mid Province) and do the long drives between towns (hours) you realize just how big the Province is. Glad you enjoyed!
We camped at Liard Hot Springs in 1979 and there was a bear trap in the campsite next to us! Nancy
Though we didn’t see many, we expect that they do have a lot,of bears in the area. The fencing is quite recent we believe, but can see how it makes sense in some areas.
You absolutely must do the Cassiar! The side trip to Stewart BC and into Hyder AK and up the old mine access road to the toe of Salmon Glacier will change you as human beings. And I'm not an ommm, hot rocks sort of guy.
A little aside, you truly are in bear country up there. So it is wise to know what you are dealing with. Black/brown bear scat is dark and almost pebbly, It often contains bits of stem and even undigested berries and sits up in a mound. Grizzly bear poop on the other hand is lighter in colour and lays flatter. It also smells of black pepper and bits of shiny bell or plastic air horn fragments are often present.
We plan to, and now so even more! Sadly, we had to get back to the lower mainland and that kept our trip shorter, plus the weather was getting somewhat wet! We are very bear aware and to date have never had an unpleasant encounter, but when hiking alone that becomes a greater risk. That said, on our whole trip we never came across any bear scat, though always made a lot of noise (even alone) just in case. Knew a fellow who was completing a doctorate on bear behavior; he referred to bear bells as dinner bells...just let the bear know something pleasing was coming their way! However, much better than surprising one!

Yes, and if you listen closely you can here the calf complain. We were there right at the end of August.
I heard you mention site #14 on Muncho Lake was what you would have liked to have camped in, but do you remember which site you were in? It was beautiful!! Do you remember anything about site #15 just past #14? Was it a good one, or was the view not as ideal as #14? Thank you, we are planning on making reservations next week for the summer.
We checked the source video and the site was #10. Most of the sites there are first come first serve (our preference), but it looks like site 11 and up can be reserved. As we recall all were great! Wishing you a great trip…watching this again makes us very tempted to return! 🚐
So jealous of Miki's seat's armrest. Our 2019 only has one on the driver's seat. Was that standard or an upgrade? Or perhaps not included on "Export Models"? :)
It came stock with the van (2017 chassis, 2018 RT). We also have back up sensors which we find helpful sometimes, but believe were only on the van for one year.
Nice video. We will be driving this same route this summer in our van. Did you feel adequately prepared with just bear spray? ever wish you had a fire arm?
Glad you enjoyed! For us an air horn and bear spray works well, pretty comfortable but we are aways careful and bear aware. Wishing you a wonderful trip! 🚐

That was an option; however a local map showed it as Honeymoon Island!

What month of the year did you go up this way?
Late August thru beginning of September. Weather was starting to cool, but still quite nice!
