Mannarino just picked up a title on grass in Newport. He also had a nice grass season leading up to Wimbledon. Any chance Mannarino can make a run at a new career high ranking at the age of 35?
-Jason Frausto
Do you think he can get to 21 or better? I think he probably cannot. I’m a fan of his tho.
Now he did it 🤙🏾
Mannarino inspired me to reduce my string tension to 35 lbs and abbreviate my forehand technique, and it was an absolute game changer.
I rarely ever feel like I “lose” my forehand like I used to. It feels like point and shoot - drastically increased accuracy with no reduction in power or spin.
Really? My forehand has been my inconsistent side my whole life. My 2 handed Jimmy Connors bh is solid as a rock. Maybe Ill give it a shot - can't hurt! But 35 lbs - dang that seems so low! lol
@@wendellroden7037 I thought the same thing, but the string technology today gets you so much spin, to me I don’t feel like I lose any control.
@@HumbleBunkYou are using a full Poly string right? I use Babolat Hurricane Tour 17 - a very hard feeling string lol
@@wendellroden7037 Yep I use Volkl Cyclone 17/1.25 strung at 35 lbs. On top of all that I’m using a Pure Drive. On paper it should be a rocket launcher but I feel like I have great control.
in theory it should mean more power but less accuracy unless you are generating a lot of spin like Sock who also strings around 34lbs
His forehand is so insane. I love it.
Agreed 100%. I love to see truly unique strokes still surviving in the modern game. His timing and feel are incredible.
-Jason Frausto
I had an arm injury due to non-tennis activity and i will have to stop for 1-2 month of tennis, then i realized I actually can play mostly like Mannarino' s style without using my injured musule so that I can still play tennis. Was string 45 lbs every week and with the injury I cannot do 45 lb anymore so i reduced to 40 lbs. I was not planning to change my play style but magic happened. After 1 week I already quite used to such an energy efficient swing pattern. Due to the injury i cannot do any old swing of myself so i do focused to see what will happen for me with such swing, it's just so relaxed and actually i still have all control i need in 40 lbs. Now I fully adapted to a new swing pattern thanks for Mannarino and so love low tension. Will never go back even my injury already fully recovered. This week string at 18kg main and 17kg cross full bed of stiff poly and really love it.
I think Mannarino's forehand is very similar to Leylah Fernandez. Both lefty, both compact, and swing path is similar. Maybe Leylah should lower her tension too if she hasn't already.
Leylah however lets the racket head drop a lot lower and has a straight arm contact point like Roger and Rafa. I used to play with her 🤙🏾
Very nicely explained
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.

Great video! You should do Djokovic next
Ref. Mac at 40 ish thin gut w a wood stick. I saw him live twice and he slung his shots soundlessly. amazing.
I do the same with a Donnay Pro One 106 @ 44 copoly M and 36 syngut crosses. I play what Tiriac calls ping-pong tennis or contra tennis.
I think that Mannarino redirects pace instead of generating his own pace. And he's good at this. That's why he has such a short swing. Yes the string tension helps but you never see him crush a ball. He just redirects to the open court. I have partners that redirect my pace and they have no swing to speak of. However, they get frustrated when I give them junk balls and there is no pace to redirect.
Ao basically at social tennis manarino would be shocking and totally lose.
@@MikeSmith-go8wk He would grab one of his other 6 rackets that are strung higher and just use that one, lol.
Eagerly waiting for your Djokovic vs alcaraz analysis of French Open and Wimbledon.
Part 1 of the 2023 Wimbledon final is coming later this week. I have to skip the French because I don’t have access to the film unfortunately. I think you’ll see some very interesting data after I post part 1 of the Wimbledon analysis.
-Jason Frausto
@@TennisUnleashed wow great eagerly waiting for Wimbledon
Good stuff Jason would be cool to see analysis if Mannarino serve
Thank you. I’ll definitely add his serve to the list.
-Jason Frausto
Cool video 👍
I currently use a 93 sq inch frame. Tried the larger 97 sq inch RF Autograph for a few years but never really enjoyed the feel of larger headsize.
How low do you think I can drop my string tension before I'm unable to keep it in the court? I'm currently at 48 lbs
Thank you. Most people tend to drop by 2lbs until they find the sweet spot. I would just experiment with a 2lb drop the next time you have your frame strung. I’m at 52lbs now but strung at 74lbs in college. I’m aiming to move to the high 40’s soon.
-Jason Frausto
@TennisUnleashed thanks. Will do just that 2 lbs ⬇️ at each restring. I think the biggest adjustment will be controlling volleys from a trampoline effect at the net.
we need your Djokovic-Alcaraz wimbledon analysis Jason, you are so good at this !
Hoping to start working on it soon.
-Jason Frausto
That point you make about the racquet head not getting behind his elbow, it is very interesting and a bit perplexing to me. It looks to me like he gets very good racquet head lag, even more than a 90 degree angle between his forearm and racquet shaft? That must be one reason why he gets such easy power?
Definitely an anomaly technique wise on tour. If there’s one thing the stroke is lacking it would be “pure finishing power”. With Nadal you know anything weak is almost guaranteed to be finished off. With Mannarino the finishing power is lacking a bit. I believe the grass surface provides the extra power his short swing lacks. Couple that “free power” with a compact stroke and you have a recipe for success on a tricky surface like grass.
-Jason Frausto
@TennisUnleashed Jason, I have seen his spin rates on his forehand and they are very low for ATP forehands. No surprise there, as like you say he does not really drop below the racquet head below the ball on his swing path. Very interestingly to me, Sock does not either yet gets very high spin rates on his forehand.
@@themrstrokeSock's western forehand grip was more aggressive so that in itself generated more spin.
“Somehow swings slightly low to high”? Swing up during contact - not before - is the key to a real forehand. During contact
Fascinating!
Glad you enjoyed it.
-Jason Frausto
what is the best tension for a decent recreational player? I typically find prestrung rackets too soft and strings begin to separate early and feel like junk in a few weeks but not really sure what to go for when I have to get them restrung :/
if you’re using synthetic strings tensions in the low 50’s are pretty arm friendly. If you’re using polyester strings low 50’s at the most with many players choosing tensions in the 40’s and even 30’s for some. I’m at 52lbs with full soft poly but I’m dropping to 48 the next time my frames get strung.
-Jason Frausto
But I have a question, i use string tension of 54 on prostaff 97(not rf version), if I go low like 48-50 won’t it disintegrate strings every time I hit the shot?
Good question. The strings should last a little longer at lower tensions because the ball is on the strings for less time. Happy hitting.
-Jason Frausto
@@TennisUnleashed life is great for strings since I switched to poly, will try going low like 48-50. Thank you.
Takes out Shelton at AO Rd 3 !!! Many new fans for Mannarino
he has the cleanest forhand ever
Mannarino in to round 3 at the US Open. Not a threat to win the event but he just keeps on winning.
-Jason Frausto
Hello grip this use ?
almost Western
Do you think a righty could have this forehand?
what difference would it make?
Haha I have a similar compact forehand with tension at 50lbs and can't imagine at half that. I'd have to just not swing at that point.
he is the MEP on tour :)
Most Exciting Player? agreed ;)
-Jason Frausto
@@TennisUnleashed that gives amateurs a hope :)
This is probably an ignorant comment but..... isn’t this just a much flatter shot than many of today’s baseline addicts? Thanks!
He plays like a taichi master
Just Watched him beat Shen Belton, Best player everrrrr!!!!!!!!!
😊
What's his forehand grip?
I think a full Western grip. I saw another slo mo video and his Palm was facing up at the point of contact
@@al1976-v7m I don't think so. it's more like between eastern and semi-western. I even feel it's eastern. Jason attributes his able to get ball over the net by not lowering his racket below the ball much to his lower tension, but I think it's more due to his racket face relative open comparing to standard semiwestern or western.
@@yili9725 hm from that video it looked more like semi-western or western... wouldn't know how palm-up could work with an Eastern grip, but not really important
@@al1976-v7m grip is very important because at the same contact point more western grip can get the ball under the net and more continental grip can get the ball out. If you look at 2'39" picture, I feel that eastern. Also I think Mannarino's Forehand is more compact and has less power. With less energy output, if using western grip, meaning more energy used to spin the ball then his ball speed would be much less. Eastern grip makes the ball more velocity and less spin, so with decent speed, Mannarino can play on tour. Otherwise he cannot be in ATP. Anyway, his technique is very interesting. Much like MEP on tour.
He hits very flat with hardly any topspin compared to most players on tour. There isn't much low to high motion and his strokes are compact. Hence why he does well on grass but less well on other surfaces.
how alcaraz beat djokovic waiting for that video. So many patterns and plays that alcaraz deployed that resulted in djokovic resorting to mind games and gamesman tactics just to prolong the match.
I had a slight delay on my analytics breakdown of that match. I’ve now done the complete data and 3D portion of the 2023 Wimbledon final. Next is the filming and editing. Hoping to have part 1 posted by the end of this week. Very interesting things in this match……stay tuned.
-Jason Frausto
Any chance his tension is in kilos & being mistaken?
Kilos from the stringers room have him in the 9.5-12 range I believe. Pretty crazy he can control that type of tension.
-Jason Frausto
No 😂
without watching the vid im going to say he is extending out tge sweet spot ..he is not centering the ball on the racket ..but closer to the outer edge, off center
Everyone top playet does that . Best spot.
And he seems to have all day to hit his forehand. It seems impossible to rush him off tgat side.
100% agreed. If you think about the lack of racket drop and the racket tip almost never reaching the elbow it’s so compact that it’s tough to rush him.
-Jadon Frausto
The string tension must be a misinterpretation of kg to lbs. I cannot imagine anyone playing at 20lbs, maybe 5 year olds. Seems likely he might be playing at 19 to 22 kg which is on the low side but not unknown for some players
No misinterpretation of lbs to kilos etc. He’s strung his frames as low as 19-24lbs. He refers to his tension in kilos which for him has been as low as sub 10 kilos. Seems impossible but that’s what he’s been doing for years now.
-Jason Frausto
It is not an error. At the Miami Open this year, his frames were posted and they were 10.5kg or 23 pounds. Daniel Nestor a multiple grand slam doubles champ used to string at 18 pounds. They make Jack Sock look high in the low 30’s….
@@TennisUnleashed He's said in interviews that he's using sometimes 9,5 kilos.
@@eincan1313 I agree with Jason Frausto. In the video there is a picture his showing his racket and i notice the string moved. very likely his tension is so low and the string just keeps moving.
😂
His swing is based on using his torso and concentrated more on the impact of the ball, a big swing doesn´t mean a big forhand...
No. It's just because less topspin.
U missed out on the point that all this modified technique and tension is due to his former wrist injury.
Basically it is an almost flat forehand.....short preparation, nothing special....😂
Very flat but quite special;) It’s incredible he can have such a loose tension but be do so consistent.
-Jason Frausto
Mannarino the lowest forehand speed of the circuit, no thanks...
Where did you get your info?
@@tomcat1555
Watching him live (10 meters from me) at the Rome tournament 2023...horrible. No speed at all, only relying in taking the ball very early, worst ATP match in the tournament. Of course he lost.
