Which of these recent Sci-Fi books were worth the read in your opinion?
This is How You Lose The Time War. I loved it.
"This is how you lose the time war" and "To be taugth if fortunate" !!! I loved both of them so much.. and I also read "Exhalation", it is good too.
The Paradox Hotel was quite alright, The Anomaly was good but something was missing. The Test was interesting but felt like I had already read something similar before.
First sister!!! You must give it a try!!
The Dreamers, How High We Go In The Dark and The Book of Koli are 3 of my favorite books that I have read in the past 2 years.
Should I do it for Mysteries/Thrillers? I just feel like I only liked a couple out of the 30 I read lol
Yes, please, and also other categories maybe?
I need to double check if there are some for other categories because so only saw these three!
Absolutely!!
Do it 😍
Yes!!
Emily: It‘s going to be either a hit or a miss, there‘s no in between.
Also Emily, two seconds later: For me, it was a meh 😂😂
LOL I was laughing at that while editing XD
It’s my understanding that this list was for the most popular books on Goodreads, which is based on how many times a book has been shelved. Upgrade would make the list because a lot of people have shelved it as want to read. That said I feel like popular series like Murderbot, The Expanse, and Red Rising would have more shelves than some of these. Goodreads is definitely questionable.
I saw Winter's Orbit fly by, which I really loved, but I will say that it is more of a romance story and a story about over coming a difficult past, in a sci-fi setting
I just finished the long way to a small angry plant, the first sci-fi book I've ever actually read! I got it after seeing you talk so positively about Becky Chambers so many times, and I was definitely ready for something wholesome. I have to say, I really really enjoyed it. I have been in a mega readying slump for a LONG time and this is the first book in ages I've been exited to pick up each night. Thank you for recomending this author so many times that my curiosity got the best of me 😆 I've already bought a closed and common orbit!
I read project hail mary and it was one of the best books I have read. Until I listened to its audiobook! They really put so much thought into the audiobook, it is its own work of art
I heard they did a good job making Rocky's language stand out.
Thank you for this video. In a reading slump for couple of weeks and I need a Sci Fi.
Can't wait to see your progress on the library
📚
I JUST finished painting 😅
I’ll include a sneak peek in my next vlog!
@@BookswithEmilyFox 🥰🥰
Feeling absolutely same about A Memory Called Empire. I thought I was going to love it and it was just ok, can’t put my finger on why I wasn’t connecting with it as much. Actually today I picked up the sequel (after I softly DNFd it few months ago) and … the same. I am enjoying myself but also I am kind of bored? I will finish it for sure but not really sure why It’s not working for me. Good space opera though with focus on language, diplomacy etiquette and relationships.
I got obsessed with The Locked Tomb the moment I opened Gideon the Ninth, my brain just latched onto it (to the point it became my new special interest). Harrow the Ninth is even weirder like you're confused for 3/4 of the book but suddenly it all makes sense and damn I loved it so much
I was looking for the lipstick comment but there is none!!! So I need to ask: your lipstick looks awesome! Which one is it, please?
Just saw this! It's from 3CE, their cloud lip tint in Pinkalicious!
How we high we go in the dark is amazing! But it is interconnected short stories and it is a pandemic book so be ready for that. I just Dnfed The Ministry for the future for the weird vignette style and because it was too grim.
Dead Scilence was one of my faves sci-fi last year. This year my top sci-fi is The Kyiju Preservation Society- very humorous
I DNFed Upgrade by Blake Crouch... I'll be waiting for your vlog on it so I can feel validated on my feelings.
U r perfectly validated because its so much info dump with very little character development or emotional involvement. ,👍
Honestly, I stopped vlogging because I was so bored lol
SPOILERS
I really don't like when a character is "super smart and super strong and super fast"... it's like he tried to improve his characters and failed.... and made everything good about his books disappear :/
@@BookswithEmilyFox Oh no! So no spoiler vlog on Upgrade? Dang, the book must've been real bad if you ditched the video. I'll look forward to your wrap up instead xD
Honestly with the way he has written his female characters in the past I would prefer if he kept writing from a male POV lol
Even though there were some interesting thoughts in it, I just found it less unique and it didn't keep me on my toes like his past work. It felt like he tried to write deeper characters but I still felt very detached from them. Mixed with the trope I don't care for...it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what but I just didn't care at all.
To sleep in a sea of stars definitely one of my favorite sci-fi books.
Jeanette Winterson’s Frankissstein really surprised me and I feel like you would enjoy it as well!
Ooh, I have A Memory Called Empire and Winter’s Orbit on my tbr and I’m hoping to at least enjoy them both. 🙏🏻
I got obsessed with The Locked Tomb the moment I opened Gideon the Ninth, my brain just latched onto it 😂 (to the point it became my new special interest). Harrow the Ninth is even weirder like you're confused for 3/4 of the book but suddenly it all makes sense and damn I loved it so much
Lots of books to add to my list, thank you 🙂 I just started reading my first Octavia E. Butler atm (Parable of the Sower) after you've raved about her. Also I love your lipstick! It reminds me of Lisa Eldridge rainbow spill 😍
The Farm was pretty good but I wouldn’t call it sci-fi. It’s about this center where women can work as surrogates. I guess it’s classified as sci-fi because that premise is a bit dystopian, but it’s really more literary fiction.
Totally off topic, but that is a lovely blouse you're wearing! The eyelet sleeves look so fresh and summery. On topic, so many of these are either on my Kobo waiting to be read or are on my want list at the library.
Thank you, it’s actually a dress! I feel like a princess 👸
It's not on the list but The Darkness Outside Us was hands down the best book I've read this year. And it's terribly mismarketed on goodreads as a cute mm romance. It's literally space survival horror and I highly recommend it.
This list was really good Emily- I actually removed Upgrade from my TBR list. I recently read Children of time after watching your recommendation on it and it came out as a 5 star. I am planning to read Children of ruin next month for my August TBR. I have Shards of earth on my kindle TBR to get to soon.
I read Remote Control earlier this year and it was GREAT. Put it higher on your TBR, you won't regret it!
I loved The Space Between Worlds, I'm surprised to hear you found it meh! I read it on audio and loved it so much I bought it in a physical copy too and re-read it.
Omg?! Haha, it's so nice to see you again! I was subscribed to your beauty channel for years and didn't know you had a book channel too😂.
I just finished Klara and the Sun about 8 days ago. I gave it a 4.25 but have been hesitating to recommend it, because I think it's going to be a big hit or miss. I do recommend giving it a try I absolutely loved it! It also might have the Cozy vibes you're looking for. But prepare yourself for it to be magical realism-ish. (It also almost made me cry)
Trials of Koli needs to go in your TBR.
Goodreads is extremely questionable. I don’t even look at their end of the year category winners because it’s just a popularity contest.
Klara and The Sun is sci-fi, but remember it’s Ishiguro so it’s more character driven than sciency. I loved it!
Agree about Upgrade.
With Upgrade, NetGalley gave out a lot of advanced ecopies so that could be how that made the list. Also I’m currently reading Dead Silence. I can’t say the if it nails the ending but at 82% I am loving it!
out of context but do you use any special hair product, your hair is super healthy
I agree with you on Blake Crouch’s Upgrade. He’s my favorite sci fi author and I felt it just didn’t even come close to how good Dark Matter was. Or Recursion.
I still can’t believe the new murderbot or expanse did not make it cause by the numbers even these later installments have more ratings than some of these others
This is How You Lose a Time War was one of my biggest let downs. I agree with you, I could not get emotionally invested. Thinking back on it, I think it had some good intentions, but I just feel it would have worked better as a short story rather than a novel.
With Sea of Tranquility, I think it helps to have also read The Glass Hotel. I fell in love with Station Eleven several years ago because of how Mandel writes, it reminds me of E.L. Doctorow at times, and I feel that Sea of Tranquility is enhanced by having read her more. I experienced the same thing with Cormac McCarthy - I had read several of his book, didn't like them, then read The Road and suddenly I was a fan. When I re-read the other books, I found that I really got into them.
Last one, I promise. I really enjoyed Dark Matter and Recursion, and felt the same way as you about Upgrade. It was good, enjoyable, but not as rewarding as the others - especially Dark Matter. I'm really interested in knowing what trope you mean. I have my own thoughts on this book. I would encourage people to read it and Crouch's other books, but it's definitely not my favorite.
I’m so glad you thought Upgrade wasn’t as great. I thought I overhyped it in my mind… and when I finished I was like “what did I just read??”
Also wasn’t very impressed with Upgrade! May have been my high expectations but I think the concept wasn’t as original as his other books and there was sooo much time spent detailing how the upgrade affected his body/perceptions at the expense of plot and character development
I agree. I like it fine, especially the beginning but I didn't like the villain and it didn't feel like a thriller to me. Recursion remains my favorite book by him.
Upgrade was released a couple of days earlier here in Europe, maybe that's why they included it in the list? I remember buying it around the 7th of July - it's also not my favourite of his books but I do like the ending, it's so wholesome!
Still doesn’t make sense that it would be considered one of the best sci fi of the last three years. Sure a few people had read it (people with ARCs) but come on.
Recursion was amazing. I recommend it to everyone. As well as Dark Matter.
I am in the midst of revisiting the Scifi genre and looking at all these lists, Children of time comes up frequently and I thought it OK, another one that comes up is Hyperium, I'm reading it now and it is just fantastic, it;s so well written it's almost literature.
I was just thinking when you would upload!!
I'm scared to get into This is How You Lose the Time War, even though it's shorter 😂 and I like Psalm for the Wild-Built 😍
I didn't finish Upgrade but I enjoyed Dark Matter and Recursion.
I have a feeling it's going to be like that for a lot of people.
I think Emily would like The Sparrow.
I agree, that is questionable when a book "rates" a spot before it is even published. To be fair, they could have had an advanced copy and were speculating...or since Goodreads is owned by Amazon, and Amazon has about 60% of the market... That's why I prefer individual reviewers. Thanks, Emily!
Dead Silence was so much fun to read! It made me so uncomfortable, but in an oddly good way.
Personally, I lovvvvveeeeeedddddddd Project Hail Mary!!!
Must read it. If u like sci-fi, with he world ending and one guy saving, and with how science works, with kinda accurate explanation.
Try it out!!!!!
Popularity is based on shelved books including Want to Read. Since Blake Crouch is a popular sci-fi author thats probably why and they decided to include July 2022 books in the list. I agree that Upgrade wasn't as good as Dark Matter and Recursion. It didn't read like a thriller to me and the only plot twist if you can even call it that was predictable. I still like some of the thematic discussion, but the plot was meh.
Upgrade was my first Blake Crouch. It was ok. Not sure if I am going to read anything else by him even though people keep.saying Recursion and Dark Matter are better.
The Martian by Andy Weir was such a fun read.
I felt like the end of the echo wife was the most unlikely thing to happen in that book. Which was saying a lot considering what the plot was about.
upgrade was decent i thought, but not as good as dark matter for me! what was the trope you didn’t like?? i ask because i think i agree. i thought the overall plotting was basic/ nothing blew
my mind besides the concept BUT it was a 4 stars for me because it was entertaining for me nonetheless
SPOILERS
I don't like when someone is stronger, smarter, faster... I feel like "of course, things will workout" and it feels easy? Even if they're against people that are the same. Might be connected to me not really loving superheroes :/ The thoughts about altering DNAs were interesting but I just didn't like it as much as his other books
@@BookswithEmilyFox SPOILERS!
I agree with that honestly. The end of the book had very little tension because you could just tell things were going to work out for him! I wish the story had gone in a different way with gene editing. It would have been more interesting to explore how things go if the upgrade did get spread or something i think
The Warehouse! Greatly underapreciated soft dystopia. Nothing groundbreaking, but really well written, leaves you with a lot of small things that just stick in your head. Just don't eat hamburgers when reading it, trust me.
I never would have guessed The Dreamers is concidered sci-fi and I think if I got told before it's a sci-fi I don't think I would have liked it as much.
To me it's feels like The Memory Police like a scenario out of your control that gives you and excuse to not exist or exist less if that makes sense. My depressive ass def enjoyed it for that haha
You have been skipping those Neal Stephenson books, but they are probably the best books on that list.
I think I read Hail Mary- or was it Dark Matter? I like Ray Bradbury.
If u want a good horror book try things have gotten worse since we last spoke. Super short and so good
I've heard about this but the book isn't available to order until september here idk why!
Also try We need to do something. It's epic!
Emily: It‘s going to be either a hit or a miss, there‘s no in between.
Also Emily, two seconds later: For me, it was a meh
Thanks so much!
I was so bored when I read The Space Between Worlds. I'm not much of a sci-fi reader, so I thought it was me... glad to hear from somebody who reads the genre more than I do that it was also 'meh'.
Recursion was such a good book…. And agreed, upgrade was meh
Search for Supreme by C.Gibson
New science fiction short novel
I'm enjoying how fussy you are. It will save me a lot of time
the arc readers could be why upgrade already ... i thought it was my least fav of his last 3...
Breaking my heart by saying you're not interested in the luminous dead. But ok. I'm fine
I need to know what's that Upgrade trope you mentioned!
SPOILER:
She wrote it's about the character being stronger and smarter than everyone else, i.e. having "superpowers" that put them at an advantage.
End of Men Is good, try it!
I had no idea the echo wife was sci fi… 😂
There´s just one book that I do not recommend at all... The Anomaly by Hervé Le Tellier (which btw is a french mathematician), that book had so much potential but the execution was very poor or at least not the kind that I was hoping for... it was a super meh for me and the author couldn't close the story the way that started... A 2 star book for me
Could I ask you for advice? I never know what to get for my father (Christmas, birthday) and now because of your videos the idea came to me to get him some new SF books. He did love Dune and also I think Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. I know he hated the Ringworld books, Larry Niven. I thought I might get Blake Crouch and Andy Weir. I would have gotten The Martian, but can't find it right now in Romanian. He doesn't read in English (he could, but he doesn't). Do you have some other ideas? Just keep in mind he is an old man, so...
Also I don't read SF, I did read The End of Childhood and a book by Ursula Leguin, also The Martian, but they are too weird for me.
Also he did like Harry Potter
Blake Crouch isn't a bad idea (Dark Matter or Recursion). There's also Children of Time if you can find it!
I did think about Children of time, but I can only find the second book translated on stock. But I did find Dark Matter and Recursion. I was also thinking about Project Hail Mary

Great video!
You didn't read Alien Pirates from another Planet!
love becky chambers 💕
I just started Upgrade by Blake Crouch and oh yes this is going to be good!
I hate open endings, I think they’re lazy. I feel like the author didn’t know how to finish their book so they just decided to leave an open ending. Lazy! 😒
I'm just going to spam my review of Upgrade on every video that mentions it - I hated it that much!:
This book is SO BAD! It has me questioning my love of Recursion and Dark Matter, as those deal with science fields I'm not as familiar as genetics. There's just something so so cringey when author writes (mild spoiler) a supposedly superintelligent character whilst clearly not understanding the science more than having read an encyclopedia entry about it once. Crouch just clutters the text with big words and minute details to make the character sound intelligent, a practice I have seen many say had them dnf the book because of "too much boring science" (note: there is no actual science here more complicated than what is taught at high school level). The worst part for me was however that: (bigger spoiler) the character is fighting against people who want to save humanity from destroying themselves similarly to how people whine about Extinction Rebellion today.
I dare to say after watching many of your videos I think you are not going to like How High We Go in the Dark. When I started I thought its going to be brilliant but in half zi totally lost interest and could not finnish it 😔
I'm sorry but I DID NOT LIKE The space between worlds.... it was hyped up and has a cool concept but the execution was so poor in my opinion

You say “meh” too much.
Might want to rewatch the intro
aww i bought space between worlds :( hmm...
I didn’t like Upgrade as much as Dark Matter and Recursion, either. I thought it was just me. I constantly felt like I was watching a movie where the main character was constantly running, like a James Bond on technical steroids. 🫢
I feel like his other books kept me on my toes but I was not invested in this story at all :(
