Three years after this post it is the most helpful and informative tutorial I've yet seen on this subject, and I don't have logic but I do have a MoDX But wow this is so useful.
You're a genius dude! I have struggled with this for years getting my Montage and LPX to work using midi! Never could find a complete explanation of both of these together. Thanks a million1
What a great tutorial. At 230 am here I saw 35 minutes duration and figured oh I will watch it another day. But so glad I started. Every minute of it was educational. And it refreshed so much info for me plus learned so much more. QQ: I would love to know if you have something to help me use my Yamaha MOXF8 and MODX8 together (and simultaneously if needed) with my MacBook Pro and Logic. Thanks!
Thank you! You may be interested to know that I have recorded an updated and improved series of videos on this subject, which you can view here: New playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLZ-i_cDvzKZlxlk9Ygg230lMr2L3sKDrw.html Regarding using your MOXF8 and MODX8 together, am I right in thinking that the MOXF has a USB audio interface, like the MODX? If so, I would suggest that you create an Aggregate (audio) Device in Audio MIDI Setup containing both the MOXF and the MODX, then tell Logic to use that for both input and output. You can then create MIDI tracks pointing to either the MIDI port of either device and monitor the audio separately. My newly-updated Aggregate Device video should help you on your way with this: Aggregate Device: ua-cam.com/video/owTz8S69rBM/v-deo.html
On the MODX: if you want to record not more than 4 stereo track in the Logic, you can go into the Yamaha performance, choose one parts of the performance and click in the name of the part, than click edit, and you can chose one of the port output USB1+2, USB3+4 and so on for the rest tracks/parts. In the Logic however, the first input1+2 is for the main input from the MODX, so start with input3+4 in the Logic for the USB1+2 in the MODX and so on. This way you can record the audio from each part/track at once, you dont have to waist your time to record the tracks individualy. Hope everybody is understand, my native language is not english. =)
I’m using an MODX8 connected with 1 usb cable. I can record my midi tracks ok but problem is I don’t have an option to select inputs 3+4 5+6 etc when I try to record them to audio. . I only have options for 1+2. If I check my midi connection in utilities before launching logic I can see the modx connected. When I launch logic it seems to be removing the usb connection because when I check again in midi devices on Mac the modx is gone just leaving the Mac mini internal speakers and hdmi monitor visible. I’ve uninstalled the driver and installed it again. Still the same. It’s really frustrating and I’m spending so much time at it and getting no where.
Actually For an updated version in 2021 Just record an a track and then record it to audio and delete the midi. And keep doing that and you’ll have separate tracks in their own place so you can mix and master effectively within Logic. Especially if you have different instruments like piano and drum hypothetically you could record the piano record it to audio and then use the same track and switch to a drum kit within montage with no problem I learned this a few hours ago.
In plug-in mode through the DAW remote you should be able to map the faders to drawbars on organ software instruments that support MIDI mapping, or if not you could probably map them to Logic’s auto-mapped smart controls I suspect.
Best tutorial I have seen in a long long time. Bravo! Do you have other tutorials?

When I choose Midi rec on DAW UNDER the quick setup, the keyboard image on top is not turning grey. I did everything like you explained I couldnt pass that part. Am I missing something? Any help?
Kier - Thank you for making videos on this topic of Montage and Logic. There doesn’t seem to be another resource for this arrangement anywhere on the web. Although I’ve learned a lot by watching these videos on Montage and Logic I’m still running into issues setting up my workflow. Let me know if I can hire you to help coach me through my setup. I’m more than happy to compensate you for your assistance.
21:52 I thought that Montage would record that performance in multitrack but, It just recorded channel 6. By the way, this tutorial is gold. Thanks for sharing us that amazing ideas
Thank you! The video is great! The only issue I have is that I cannot solo a single midi channel to record an audio. I tried to solo it in different ways, but every time it solos all the midi channels from the same instrument. Even if I mute the regions on the other midi channels, it still sounds as a whole. Didn’t find any info on this one in the net. Thanks for help!
Hey thank you for the nice video. I have 2 questions i need help with please. 1. What do i need Midi Studio for? 2. How do i turn montage connect online? Mine appears offline and choosing an instrument from the library runs into an internal error :( Thank you
I had the same problem but it seems we have to switch to "MIDI Rec on DAW" (on the Montage keyboard itself) to set the Montage Connect software to "Onlie". You can find it in the video at 4:28. Hope this helps!
I just got the montage and still can`t get it connected to my Logic, I watched the Blake Angelo tutorials and he shows the set up a lot different and simpler but it won`t work for me, is your tutorial an older version of the set up, is there an easier way to integrate the Montage with Logic for 2022? Thanks for the tutorial, you explain it very well.
The American Beauty patch originates from the Motif XF - it's part of the bank you can download from Yamaha to bring in all the old XF voices to the Montage/MODX
Many thanks!!! Big ups and again, greatfull for the video and time. I had heard Bad Mister from Yamaha mention that data could be edited and returned into the Yamaha, would you happen to know how any of this is done? Like.... create a midi stream that sends info back to individual parts in the Montage? Basically I can not separate midi I upload into the montage.... thanks again man
Hi Kier, Well I tried to setup the midi and everything you've instructed to do, but it actually came out backwards, the MODX port makes the sound but no levels and the AUDIO doesn't even have the audio bar level move, there is no sound from the audio... What is going on?
I followed your directions, but when I initiate an audio track for the MODX, it does not come up in Logic Pro X as a possible choice. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks ! I’ve followed your tutorial step by step but once I launch the record, it doesn’t take simultaneously the midi and the audio recording…is there anything I could have missed?
15 min I have an issue. I don't have separate midi tracks option in logic, I'm recording piano with 4 tracks in it but piano roll has single green color. Not different color like urs
Very good job ! But many might ask, that they just want to record the MODX sounds on different tracks. (and make them sound according to the selected Performance on the MODX) So e.g track 1 I want a piano, track 2 a bass, Track 3 a pad. It just seems to happen that when you select a performance on the MODX, this applies to all tracks in logic. What is the trick ? Must be so simple but I just don't get it....
You have eight slots in the modx 1-8 and you choose an instrument for each slot. To get you daw to play each instrument separately on midi you have eight midi outs with channel 1-8. Modx 1 = piano Midi channel 1 = piano Mod2 2 bass Midi channel 2 = bass And that's all you do.
Thanks!! for some reason i can only hear what i have recorded when i press play, but not while recording? sure its a small issue wich i can't see, but i am an absolute noob at this.
Thank you, but, where Midi Studio is? I can't remember and can't seem to find it after updating my Mac (OS 12) and Montage Connect to the latest version... :(
So I have been able to replicate everything done here. And thank you for all of that. However, I am not using a separate audio interface or second audio interface. With that said, can someone explain how they have their settings for using a guitar through the ad input of the montage? I am able to get signal and record. However, if I add fx via biasfx vst those fx are added to all channels.
I must be missing something @kierdarby but sometimes recording Arpeggios work, sometimes they dont (on MODX6 plus). What am I missing (using Logic Pro as a DAW). Any help is much appreciated. In midi settings you have midi in and out and that's where you choose modx-1 ports. In your daw add a midi channel and it will be under there the channel and all settings.

@@bullzeyebeats you can treat the MODX like a VST using MODX Connect.
