    Hi Billy, I will also be looking into a cradle but not sure we will gain much as when we currently use the connected we can do most of these things on the tft screen. Choosing a route and via points. Distance and turns and having the map on the phone and the directions on the tft screen. Let’s hope the thing stays connected better that in itself would be the best improvement. Look forward to your review.

    Much better than my teeth. I was riding with iPhone in left hand shooting video when I realized the curve I was approaching required a downshift. Quickly put the phone in my mouth to get my hand on the clutch. Quite rapidly, the phone fell out to hitting the road at about 30 miles per hour. I have to say the LifeProof case only was a bit scuffed up and the phone had no damage. A Cradle is on its way to me in the mail. (the resulting video was pretty interesting) ;-o

      Ah great to hear there was no damage to your phone! BMW have just put the price up to £200 here in the uk. Definitely not worth £200. Plus i cancelled my order as i still had not received it by end of January. Hope it works out for you and thanks for watching the video. Cheers. Billy

    I have ordered one and the delivery date is mid January I like the fact that it wireless charging as well as cable. I also had the same cradle as you Billy but found that when charging it and it started raining then my iPhone threw up a fault which I think was water running down the cable and into the phone. I believe that if you have the Bmw helmet and comms then you can control the volume via the wheel I have the schuberth so it will be interesting to see if it will control the volume on that in the same way

    Thx for the video. It seems current technology would allow BMW to produce a smaller Bluetooth adapter to connect com/nav system to our phone rather than having us buy another cradle. My current generic cradle holds the phone perfectly albeit without the turn wheel control function.

    Hey Billy. Greetings from Brazil! Great Video. During the BMW facebook live they mentioned the back compatibility with older R1200 that doesn't have TFT displays. I would kindly ask you to review the cradle with these older bikes too. We won't be able to get the cradle in Brazil before next summer so it would be very helpful if you could test it. :)

      Hi Felipe. Thanks for watching all the way over in Brazil 👍 😀 and your comments! I will certainly seek information from those that are using the cradle without the TFT displays and see what they say. With or without the TFT I see very little difference in the use of the phone cradle. If you have a TFT screen you would need to use the menu rocker button to move the function of the wheel to the cradle. No TFT screen then no need to do that. All else should remain the same. I will come back to you though on that. Stay safe. Billy

    If you buy quadlock case with wireless charger and anti vibration you won’t be too too far away from £180, you do get a decent case though and for me a great set up. I think the BMW cradle by the looks has wireless charging. However being an iPhone user I feel the quadlock is the safest option for the phone. I may be one of the few but I have had a nav6 for 4 years used extensively on my 1200 gsa and it’s has worked great, I even use it on my KTM 690.

    What I seem to be missing in all the presentations of this new device, is the ability to import GPX routes in the navigation once the phone is connected with the cradle. Were you able to try/test that option out?

    • @BillysBikeAdventures
      @BillysBikeAdventures  2 роки тому

      Hi Dirk. That would be a great option, however, I don't think it will feature in using the wheel (I don't know this for sure but will investigate when I get mine). Right now I can say that you would do this manually, ie phone in cradle and use your finger to do this, whilst not riding of course :-)

    One question I have is that since ConnectedRide Cradle is not direct contected via wire to your smartphone there is just a Bluetooth handshake from either The NAV prep or TFT back to your phone. And you can use the “Wonder Wheel” via that back to,your phone. So, the IT /engineering technology could have been devised to do the same with your phone on a Quad Lock. But that defeats some of purpose, which is tomsell the ConnectedRide Cradle.

    Hi Billy , great video and thank you for your thoughts on it. I do have some questions ,hope you can help. Did you have any issues with your phone camera using the “cheaper” old cradle ? I have not watched the BMW videos yet, but did they mention anything about damage to your phone camera ? I use the quad lock vibration damper but I would prefer to use the BMW cradle on my XR.

    • @PMitchell106
      @PMitchell106 2 роки тому

      The vibrations are my concern too, the navigation preparation cradle has some damping, but when I put my hand on it at highway speed, there is still a lot of high frequency vibrations coming through, enough to kill most Optical Image Stabilization sensors with regular use.

    • @BillysBikeAdventures
      @BillysBikeAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Cumo Bullen. Thanks for watching and you question. On the LIVE Facebook event earlier to launch the cradle earlier in the week, the phone damage was asked as a question. As PMitchel106 has mentioned, BMW noted that their sat nav preparation set up has vibration dampening built in. I have been using a generic nav prep mounted cradle for the last two years, same phone for that period and no problems. Others will say they have had issues. Having said that I don't take my GSA off road so always road riding and never had a phone problem. Also I believe that the announcement from Apple related to specific models of their iPhones so would be worth checking this out. I am using the Quad Lock with vibration dampener on my Tenere 700, but it's early days yet with that so time will tell if that works. Overall I am not too worried about the phone even with the new BMW cradle that I get sometime before Dec 10th. I will post a review once I have had a chance to use it. Hope that helps! Ley me know if you have any other questions. Stay safe. Billy

    Good overview, I also looked at the underwhelming BMW reveal. Hopefully it will evolve to allow more use of the phone like CarPlay.
    $390 In Canada and hopefully it interacts with more than just the BMW connected App.
    The Wonderlinq module allows almost full use of the phone and other Navigation apps like Scenic and Apple Music, and the significant advantage for non TFT owners is it emulates the TFT dash.

      Allowing other apps would require BMW to open it up to other developers (whatever APIs are involved) and those other apps to take advantage of it being opened up. I guess I could see Calimoto or similar doing it, but you'll never see anything like Waze, Spotify or other targeted at general audiences.

      Apple Play / android equivalent would be great. Many more apps accessible. But BMW want you to stay with BMW. I get it but if they are going to do something then do it really well. But how do you go about sharing favorite waypoints with someone else?
    While the software comes from TOMTOM, why not be able to put danger zones (radars) for example?
    And what about the TFT (R1250RT) where we cannot even put our applications !!! (eg waze with radars).
    While other motorcycle brands put Apple car play, why didn't BMW do it?

      @BillysBikeAdventures  2 роки тому

      Hi Jack. Thanks for watching and your comments! I agree with you that it would be far more appealing to add Apple Car Play where we can use our favourite nav apps. I guess BMW want to keep progressing with product innovations for revenue sustainability. Waze is certainly ahead of the game in terms of innovation and interactivity with their app, that may not be the direction that BMW want to go. One thing is for sure though and that is given their app is aimed at motorcyclists, they have a lot to do in order to fulfil the offering that many want. Easy trip planning and mapping. On and off road tracking to name a couple. It does require some significant updates. The cradle at £188 I don't think will be worth the cost. The cradle is good but flawed
    My iPhone 14 Pro fits but because of the camera lens it doesn’t sit flush so it doesn’t charge my phone with or without a case on. Also the arm on the right side which is for different size phone fell out when riding so that’s gone, and because it doesn’t sit flush it’s a worry that my phone will fall out when riding. Also the price is now £220 I believe. With that all said the functionality it offers is very good just let down in a few areas.

    Hi Billy, I had the chance to take a look on this cradle. There a are two physical issues on this product which makes this solution disappointing. The dimensions which BMW choosed are to less. A Galaxy S21 Ultra is fits barely in and only without a case. A Note 20 doesn’t fit at all, although according to the information it should fit. Another point is the problem with the camera units on the most mobiles which a currently on the market. As soon they jut out the phone doesn’t sit properly in the cradle and the inductive charging can make some trouble. Basically a very could idea from BMW but the development wasn’t done according the actual phone sizes and designs at all.

    Thanks Billy. Another honest review, look forward to you getting your hands on one. A few points for your consideration:
    Will the phone clamp interfere with the volume buttons on the side of an iPhone?
    Wireless charging would be a bonus.
    I wouldn’t buy the Nav unit either, but I am looking at the Garmin XT
    I am worried about vibration even on the GS Prep unit. I have a good friend whose phone camera just developed the fault (though not on a GS) so the XT would score over a phone.
    The price £188 is a significant chunk of the XT price of £350
    Your thoughts would be appreciated!
    Cheers

      Hi N Watson. Thanks for watching and your comments / questions. Mine is being delivered by December 10th so a review planned before Xmas. Ref questions
      - will let you know on button interference
      - it will wireless charge your phone (model dependant)
      - vibration damage to phone is also model dependant from Apple, BMW state that they have vibration dampening built in to the frame that the sat nav prep sits on, I have been using my phone for the last couple of years in the cheap cradle and. I issues at at 5500 km.
      I have also thought about the XT it I have found that nav apps serve my purpose well.
      Review of cradle to come soon. Thanks again. Stay safe. Billy 👍🏼

    If we were still in the eu it wouldn’t be so expensive…. Just saying 😝.
    Also I have that cheap 20 bucks one and it’s garbage won’t charge half the time because it’s rains here so much my phone tells me that it’s damp….. I put a wireless charger in it myself but the fact that the bmw has one sold it for me.

      Ah Mark, you brought politics into it 🥵 the cheap one has worked well for me but as much as I don’t like to admit it, I will using GPS device instead as my iPhone camera has finally packed up as per all the warnings. So whilst I would much rather be using my phone and a nav app, the phone warranty won’t cover a replacement when used on a motorbike and damaged from vibration where as a GPS made specifically for a motorbike will do. Thanks for watching and your comments. Stay safe. Billy

      Hi Neil. Think I have decided to stay away from this now. Since doing this video my iPhone camera has broken as a result of vibration from the bike. I am likely to go to sat nav, although not the nav 6 but probably the Garmin xt / Tom Tom. Don’t want new phone breaking. Stay safe. Billy.

    I’m not sure I’d use this. I have the Nav 6 and I have my iPhone on a wireless charger quadlock with a dampener. I consider the Nav6 as “backup” for when the phone can’t get service especially in mountainous areas and off road situations. I have several bikes and the Quadlock gives me a consistent holder across dissimilar bikes. I haven’t been impressed with the connected app so far.

      Hi Doug. Thanks for watching and your comment! I also use Quadlock on my Tenere 700. I am intrigued to see how much better the app has got and how well it works with the wheel on the bike. For bad signal areas I would usually download the map to. my phone for consistent tracking. That seems to work well. I have bought one now so waiting for delivery about Dec 10th. I'll let you know what I think. Stay safe. Billy

    Nav6 makes a difference when you need a real GPS with no cell signal. MP3 player is good as is the live display with bike data.
    Cell cradle looks good, price doesn't.

      Thanks Gene for watching and your comments! Yes having no signal can be an issue. I generally download the map to my phone for the areas that I think I might have a signal challenge. Agree price may not be worth the functionality you get with it. Stay safe. Billy

    Hi, I'm somewhat intrigued by this. A Nav 6 is about the £600 mark lets say for arguments sake, a Smartphone, perhaps an iPhone 13 is about £1100 plus the new BMW mount £188. I believe Apple have recently released a statement saying that an iPhone should not be handlebar mounted on a motorcycle due to vibration which could cause damage to the phone. With Apple making this statement it gives them a get out clause not to honour a warranty claim if they believe you have used the phone in contravention of their advice/terms. If I park up and walk away from the bike, I tend to leave the Nav 6 in situ in it's cradle, there's no way you'd do this with a Smart phone. My final point is that the Nav 6 etc works from satellites whereas your Smartphone works from a signal received via a Mast. The Nav 6 is always going to be more reliable than any App on your phone. I'm all for advances in technology but I can't help but thinking that BMW would be better off developing a newer Satnav to address the issues you have mentioned although I've never personally had any issues with my Nav 5 or 6.

      Hi Planet GSA. Thanks for watching and your comments! All valid point you make but I believe all equally explained. A Nav 6 is cheaper than a smartphone but most of us if not all of us have one of these already. The Nav 6 or equivalent would be an additional cost. GPS signal no problem, most apps allow you to download maps for use offline so and then rely on it s own GPS signal to locate you on the map, problem solved. AS for the comment that Apple have made about the vibrations causing problems with their phones, its only for certain models not all and BMW have built in vibration to the sat nav preparation. I have been using my phone for a couple of years now on my cradle mounted on my sat nav prep on my GSA, not a problem. That said I would not take it off road in the same setting so for road riding there should never really be an issue. Your right, no way I would leave the phone in the cradle and walk away, I am so used to taking my phone with me everywhere that to take it off the mount is no bother. The one thing I have not seen on social media yet (perhaps time will change this) is complaints about my phone did not sync to my computer or it sent me in the wrong direction and screen won't work. Pound for pound I believe that nav apps and phones are much better than sat navs. But thats just me and my experiences. I appreciate that we are all different and no one is right for everyone, just themselves. Great to hear that your Nav 5/6s have not given you issues! Stay safe. Billy

      Hey planet GSA, you’re mistaken about the GPS. Almost all smartphones now have built-in GPS. I use Scenic on my phone and that works without a SIM installed. You don’t need to buy a brand new phone, I use an old iPhone 7 for bike nav.

    I have bought one of these cradles and implore people not to buy one as they are a very expensive phone holder nothing else. Until BMW does something about the abysmal tft software this device will not work as you would expect. The fact you can operate it with the wonder wheel is a joke because if your phone and intercom cannot stay connected to your tft its a waste of money. My unit helped with the connections but the audio was so quiet I couldn't hear map instructions if you play music from your phone it cuts in and out all the time not acceptable I would put it on ebay but I think there's going to be quiet a few on there soon !!! BMW please get it right before you allow another pease of s--- out again same goes for tft connectivity.

    Mom used to say "if you can' say anything nice then don't say it at all!". Another outrageously priced item from BMW. Sounds to me like someone needs to map all of the pins on the existing connector then supply an inexpensive base (like the existing ones available on the market) and create an app similar to BMW's. By mapping all of the pins you will get the same functionality as BMW's (using the wheel and the button). The main challenge for someone with those programming skills is there a business case that justifies the investment?

      Hi Terry. Thanks for watching and your comments. There is definitely an opportunity for better innovation. The investment versus ROI is a great question. Nice advertisement for another overpriced and underperforming BMW "thing". Actively blocking smartphone assistance by the tft and then selling this crap.Plus the mandatory navigation setup, this is stuff for fools. Connected is useless for any unpaved road because of the poor street maps (from BMW cars...)
