- Spring is coming, and I need a tiller. In this episode I begin the repairs on the cheap Howard 80 rotovator I just bought. In this episode I replace the main rotor seal, repair the bearing carrier, cover hinges and height adjusters.

Great job dave, you may need copper or aluminium washers on the oil.side of bolts u put in could be leaking thru the bolt or nut heads and always rub the silicone around holes where u didnt put any I can understand why u got frustrated😅.👍
I didnt even thing of that, makes a lot of sense! I'm starting to wonder if the seals expanded as it seem oil tight this year 🙂

I can understand why you where getting frustrated with it. Dam rivets but the bolts seemed to have done the trick after the turn. It's the first time av seen one run on the back of a tractor myself. My Dad used to do a fair bit of plowing with a Ford 4000 we had but he always used discs and harrows. We used to follow him picking up stone's and throwing them to the side Rember learning to reverse with the tractor lol collecting stone's. My brother's got my Dad's small holding since my Dad's passing got the little grey Ferguson with a 3 cylinder Perkins p3 it's not a bad little machine but he keeps saying he could do with getting a 4 wheel drive. Was over there this week just gone he's lambing so he's been quite busy with them. Hope you are keeping well and thanks for the shout out bud. 👍

You should avoid using any sealant on cork gaskets as the sealant tends to lubricate the cork gasket and when you tighten the bolts the gasket will tend to extruded out the sides; although you were so careful that it seemed to be absolutely perfect. Awesome job though mate, another useful machine saved from being scrapped. your videos are excellent and your work is meticulous and thorough; you take very careful approach that is not often seen on youtube and I really like the way you work on things

@@wickedxe it was actually back at work this weekend for the first time this year. Rotovated 3 neighbours gardens, it appears I must have one of the only rotovators in the area 😂.

Hi Dave. Thanks for sharing your experiences with repairing the Howard. I just wanted to ask if you'd serviced the slip clutch? In the video it's where the driver shaft joins to the gearbox. Im told it should be adjusted and checked every year or so. It's important cos if you hit a decent size rock and jam the blades it will prevent drastic damage to the drive chain etc....
Glen, to be honest I was totally unaware of the need to service it. What's involved in the service? I'm trying to remember if I had it apart or not, I have a feeling I did to allow me to replace the UJ but id need to check. Thanks for the tip!
@davesworkshop2714 I've had a look at a few different videos but none of them are specifically for Howards. Basically the annual service involves backing off the 6 or sometimes 8, bolts so their springs are under no load. Lock the blades on the rotovator (sit it on the floor?) And then run the tractor with the PTO engaged so one half of the clutch spins and the other is stationary. This makes sure the plates aren't rusted together. Then retighten the bolts evenly, not all in one side first, to preload the springs.... what varies is how much to turn the bolts cos it depends on the thread pitch but most people say 1 and a half full turns....

Thanks Michael! Good to hear from you! There has been work on the CAT, and the plan was to get at it last weekend until the Howard threw a wobbly. Ill get back on it next weekend and bring another video soon. Truth is, I badly need it up here so need to get it finished. Stay tuned.
They leak from new Sadly was expected to top them up daily when oil was as cheap as chips. We got 6 e sires all different sires all been on the farm from now grandad and grandad always put grease in them never had a problem. I dred to think how meany acres they done used to all potato,carrot,parsnip,cabbage,Sprout,beet root so on and so on land every year

Hi. Steven. Just wondering if you had to change the Bearing at top of drive chain. I need to replace it. But it won’t budge. I made a Puller to pull it out. But it won’t Budge. I can’t see any ring clip holding it. A lot of Pressure but did not move. Any Ideas
Enjoy your video again. Not sure exactly what machine mine is. Very similar to yours. No wheels and only one swing door on back. Don’t know if I can get parts here in Pennsylvania. A slight leak on bottom of chain drive cover plate. Afraid to take off cover because I don’t know if I can get gasket. My problem is the Spade shaft is not turning freely. Not sure what’s causing that. Again any advice would be appreciated. Just subscribed. Thanks. I’m from Laois Originally. Great Soil there. My Father had nothing but David Browns on the farm. And a Howard Rototiller. Should have learned lots from him. He always Rototilled. Before Drills for Sugar Beets.
Great to hear from you Brian! I would assume yours is a 60 or 70 if it's single cover without the wheels. To be honest they are a far better machine as the 80s and above were more susceptible to the main rotor getting bent due to length, hence why they're cheaper to buy used. As for the leak, what oil are you using, it appears whatever you do they leak a bit. Also, you'd probably get a gasket made if needed. Given that it's cork it's probably safe enough to open.
@@davesworkshop2714 I don’t know if it had wheels at some point. I bought it about 6 years ago at a Garden center closeup auction. $2500. 😳. Maybe I can send you a video. Might be of help as to its age etc. with view of bearing also. If that’s okay 👌
Really enjoyed your repairs, it prompted me to drag our P.60 howard out of the nettles and see if we can restore it.

Chris, glad you enjoyed the video! Well worth fixing up that 60, they're a very popular machine. I got some of the parts locally from a general agricultural hardware shop (spades and the UJ), and the seals and gaskets came from Evan's engineering over here in Cork. I'd imagine they'd be plenty of suppliers for parts in Wales. Good luck with the work!!
