  • Summer days are the getaway days for families on the go -- perhaps to set out on a camping trip or a stream side picnic lunch. I recently discovered along the Oregon coast, it's also a chance to try something entirely new.
On this Grant's Getaway, all you need is a rake, a bucket and a spirit of adventure to try raking bay clams along the Oregon coast. Summer mornings along the coast are often met by folks in hip boots with shovels or rakes -- but they're not there to work, rather they've come to play; especially on a minus low tide on Tillamook Bay at a place where clamming is king.

I like that chowder recipe! In our house, we usually shredded the potato rather than cubed them. And added some very finely shredded carrot. One of the little variations we use now is to add a little cilantro. Plus, the older recipe used a little diced bacon. Way back, they added suet!

I grew up on clam digging. Sometimes it was the only way my family could eat.

Oregon sounds like the perfect state for seafood lovers: Crabs & clams all free for the taking. And tons of wonderful forests and wildlife. It definitely is on my list of states to move to. Is there anything about Oregon that ISN'T good?

What's wrong with rain? It makes everything green and lush.

Really? Do you mean just in the cities? Because if I move there I will be looking for a rural property that is about 20-30 minutes outside of Portland so I can go in the city to eat at the great restaurants..but live in the quiet countryside. You don't mean the rural areas are congested too..right?

It sounds like you live there, Luke. Can you recommend a nice rural area that is 20-30 minutes outside of Portland where I can live on a few acres with no near neighbors? Thanks!

Could you comment on this video on YT. they claim this is a view at Cannon Beach. Several of us think this isn't Haystack Rock, and don't know for sure where this Bridge foundation is. I guessed it might be the Yaquina Bridge, but what those rocks are . . . not Haystack Rock, right?? Here's the link: watch?v=PjGEn_QB2L0
