Crime is soaring, to make room in our overcrowded prisons the Torys are cutting sentences by 70 days and only giving custodial sentences to criminals sentenced to over a year. 14 yrs to build prisons and fight the causes of crime and they did neither. Austerity is the blame for all our problems. Every single one.
Tory blame shift. People seemingly are no longer falling for it quite as readily though. Hall even invented a 'crime', when she dropped her purse and Oyster card and claimed to have been pickpocketed! She should be done for lying, but I guess she got her comeuppance for doing her bit unfairly blaming Khan!
Imagine another five years of this lot being in control. If you’d spoke to me in 2010 I could’ve told you what will happen if you let tories take over..I hope the next generation never forget these times, because most of them won’t survive another tory attack..
With all due respect the Tories axed 25,000 police officers? Now they are having to rehire them? What a waste of money, time and further resources which exactly like the army has been a humongous waste of tax payers money.
Sunak seems to have plans for everything. He's probably working on a plan to buy his fifth mansion rather than actual plans to sort out anything of any kind at all.
Sadly the Tories made massive cuts to the police. They now proudly tell us they have recruited most (but not all) of the numbers back, but it means we have rookies instead of the experienced officers they fired.
Evan Hunter wrote "The blackboard jungle" 70 years ago in 1954 and much of the themes in that American novel are still relevant NOW in the US and in the UK... So is the film with Sydney Poitier! One thing I remember from it was the fact that when you put all the social problems and their agents and subjects at the bottom of the stew pot while attempting to do little more than 'sit on the lid'; then eventually the simmer heat becomes a boil and the steam blows the lid away with those who sat on it after many of the other sitters ran away as the heat and pressure were felt mounting, escaped hissing and rattling and the burning could be smelt. THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING increasingly! We are sitting on a similar cauldron.
Once again a brilliant blog Michael but what a sad situation we’re in. We now live in Southern Spain, much smaller economy than the UK but always lots of police on patrol, plenty of ambulances about and a well functioning health service
I've said for a long time - if you take an absolute cynical view of benefits - you could say: "Benefits are what prevent people with nothing - from mugging you and breaking into your house, stealing your car etc". I think with the tory squeeze - people will be experiencing more of those. "The party of law and order",.
This is the reason we have a relatively good system for helping people with mental and psychological issues in Germany: even if you think addicts are a waste of money and depressed people should "just get over it", it's still cheaper, far cheaper, to run these programmes than pay for the police to clean up the mess.
UK needs to get back to basics, more police on the streets, more efficient and effective justice system and tougher sentencing. Mass underfunding is the problem
Tougher sentences it would appear Sunak is now letting convicted criminals out of prison months early, or not giving custodial sentences as there is no room in the prisons. Good deterrent!!!!
Like most of society’s ills, a solution will require raising taxes on those best able to afford tax increases. A difficult political prospect for conservatives as it would require lawmakers to vote to increase the rate of taxation for themselves and for everybody they know socially.
The establishment doesn't fret very hard over the lower and middle echelons inflicting criminality amongst and between themselves. But see it pull out all the stops when financial elites, VIPs, institutions and major corporations are affected!
It's more a case of years of neglect from government...local facilities are destroyed by austerity...family breakdown causes gangs to thrive and of course no money will drive people to crime..its a number of issues over many years
Our last council sports/leisure facility is about to close. Apart from the obvious, it provided lots of activities for children and teenagers during the school holidays and many weekends. During the pandemic the Tory council bulldozed the local swimming pool down on account of needing relatively minor repairs, they did this to make sure that a potential future Labour government and council didn't reinstate it. Meantime our Tory MP has been gifted £25 minor leveling up fund which she has wasted on a dozen ribbon cutting events, ie vanity projects, including a£2 million IT project for the village museum. I kid you not.

The guy who got £3k to Rwanda left the hotel apparently, he's definitely on his way back. And I can't say I feel too sorry when these giant corporations such as Tesco are being robbed in broad daylight, they benefited massively from the Tory cuts to the public service in the last 14 years, shoplifting is a direct consequence of those cuts to police etc.

I am now no longer able to cooperate with my former colleagues in Germany; it is difficult for me to charge them for my services from the UK and I can't easily "import" their expertise to this country. My accredited professional qualifications are not even recognised in Germany any more... Policing in mainland Europe is also a rather patchy matter and there seems to be rather less CCTV for data protection reasons. However, the disregard of such evidence of a crime in the UK is hard to justify.
Economic hardship and widespread poverty and injustice are, unfortunately, incentives to crime. Hopelessness and job loss don’t make people more honest or stable. Conservatives only care about criminality among the lower orders. They seem to regard criminality among the privileged as a God-given right. One of the privileges of being privileged.

Oh, and let´s not forget that Poland suffered under a Soviet stlye command economy for over well four decades which make the comparison with the UK even more embarrassing...! My wife is Polish and I have had a link with that country going back many, many years and I have seen how it has changed. Accession to the EU, however, accelerated its development to become the country it should have been if it had not been thrown to the Stalinist wolves in '45.
The most embarrassing thing at all is being hyperfocused on comparisons with other countries vs focusing on solutions in this country. I think one of the reasons poland has improved as a country (besides being in the EU) is that it's governments didn't quantify improving things or the state of the country purely through international comparisons but it focused on what it is was in charge of. That's what matters. Certain commenters such as michael focus a bit too much on international comparisons and not enough on simply touting improvement. A lot of what michael lambert seems to discuss is the "How" of decline instead of the solutions to it. Saying we need to be more like belgium or italy or Germany isn't a solution to every problem the Uk has, nor is it the best way of quantifying the Uk's problems.
@@ecaeas4439 Yes, what you say makes a lot of sense and international comparisons don't often make much sense, each country has had its own development history and culture etc.. However, in the case of the UK, it has had truly enormous advantages, its wealth making in the 18th century (from slaving to the Georgian arms trade) fired the industrial revolution that made the country the richest in the world. Areas like South Wales mid 19th century should, by rights, have seen an economic and cultural flowering thanks to its massive wealth making. England/UK has had centuries of development of its institutions of government and bureaucracy and the development of its democratic system, processes denied many other countries. Its empire provided the means for endless enrichment well into the 20th century too with its assured markets. Given this, I don't think that making unfavourable comparisons with other European nations is pushing it too far.
The courts and the criminal justice system have been defunded to such an extent that it really barely functions now. Same with the prison system. Like most systems in the UK it is close to breaking point.
I thought that may be in the news in the UK. I've found that I can reliably tell what's happening in the UK by what the trolls are claiming is "a serious problem" in Europe. It's quite entertaining.
MICHAEL Have you ever tried contacting your local member of Parliament for any help? I beleive they are currently on a basic of about £90k a year, PLUS staff costs etc, When I telephone my constituency office, for four months a record message keeps telling me ‘this mail box is full good bye.’ So I email their office and cc the MP at Houses of Parliament, and ALL I ever get is an auto acknowledgment, nothing else. What are we paying and voting these MP’s in to power for when they are doing nothing to help the public.
The Tories did a hatchet job to the police in the UK, destroying local policing, and despite the increase in recruitment, they are not the police force they once were. Bringing back proper local/community policing would help a great deal, but it’s not going to happen under the Tories. I agree, Michael, it’s a depressing mess here in the UK.
Thank you Michael. Life in the UK looks very bleak today. Is there any hope at all on the horizon I would ask? Will the rivers and beaches of the beautiful green and pleasant land always smell of shit? Will the NHS ever again be voted the best health care system in the world as it was 14 years ago? Will Britain ever again pioneer some life changing technology? Meanwhile there are boarded up shops and litter everywhere. It's hard not to despair but listening to your videos perks me up knowing that I am not alone in what I am seeing, feeling and thinking about the tragedy which has befallen the UK. Brexit was all about hiding the financial secrets of the wealthy from EU scrutiny no matter the cost. They wanted the UK to remain a tax haven though it's arrangement with Overseas British Territories in far away locations such as the Cayman Islands. A good place to hide gifts from foreign oligarchs and anything dodgy. The cost in human terms and that of national decline has been staggering to watch unfold since 2016. The country is skint, the gov't has no ideas and the populace are stunned into a situation where they appear shell-shocked. The lead up to the General Election is going to be ugly. Very ugly. Try not to let it get you down and keep the videos coming thanks.
Crime is an issue but to think that you are at risk of being stabbed if you visit london is ridiculous. Most victims know each other. The US has way higher homicide but its never reported.
Okay, serious question here. If a police force is found - whether by internal inquiries or actual court cases - to have structural defects related to misogyny or racial discrimination (they regard female witnesses as over-hysterical, they take the word of a white person over the word of black person), would you not accept that there is a serious perversion of the way that force operates? Perhaps they think that people in wheelchairs or with speech impediments have an innate stupidity about them that discredits their testimonies, perhaps they think that same-sex couples are at some level "asking for it". You can answer No, that you think it's fine. But do so openly. What if it is true that friction and ill-will inevitably emerge from having an ethnically diverse community "controlled" by a visibly majority white police force? And this is perpetuated by a recruitment system that selects in like-minded caucasian people? If you think that's easy to fix, or perhaps it's "the other people's fault they shouldn't be so jumpy", okay, say so. See, you are being very sneery at the idea that these might actually be very large and hard problems. You simply have not paused to consider that the staff who undertake it will likely face threats, bitterness, intimidation. You instantly dismiss that their salaries might be commensurate with the task they have to do. To me the salaries sound high, generous, even extravagant, but (like you) I haven't looked into what those costs aim to achieve. I haven't a notion what the job is. Unlike you I am not going to post a video online declaring these costs, in their entirety, to be foolish and contemptible.
I live in an ethnically diverse community, I don´t lock my car or my front door, lost debit cards, wallet, driving licence all safely returned, occasionally people who need to beg find generosity here, so if the Spanish can do it, why can´t the English ?
Excellent observations. The story of the person kidnapped and made to transfer money sounds a bit like the story that Tory MP was telling when he spoke of ‘the bad people’. See you Saturday. Dave✅😂
What do you mean in the uk, crime is down in scotland, wales and NI.. Infact crime is at its lowest in scotland with more police officers compared to other parts of the uk..
Starmer and his Labour Party will be accepting Braverman next. As for gangs robbing shops. As any kind of employee would you really stop them for minimum wage? Would you get stabbed for minimum wage?
It is very impressive when somebody as measured as you are calls somebody a complete and utter loser. I am a rather firy person, when I say that, it does not hit as much as it does when you do!

It's heading that way certainly, but it can be changed with a better PM and government.
Our police rarely show up and if they do, the courts let them down
The courts and the criminal justice system have been defunded to such an extent that it really barely functions now.
Well Said Michael!
Knife crime isnt the issue its the gang culture which has been imported from the US, knives are just the gangs weapons of choice.
And obviously we have guns here. You should never bring a knife to a gun fight.
The problem is that every other Tory alternative is even worse. The good thing is that the Tories will lose and he will go with them.
Thoroughly depressing video but thanks for the update, think I need a drink! Better find out about flights to Poland 🤔
Ive definately seen more security in shops in the last year.
We are doomed Michael, we area all doomed!
Excellent observations. The story of the person kidnapped and made to transfer money sounds a bit like the story that Tory MP was telling when he spoke of ‘the bad people’. See you Saturday. Dave✅😂
Sadly Michael most of your comments are true and an accurate discription of our Society today. We need to move back to basics and common sense.
What do you mean in the uk, crime is down in scotland, wales and NI..
Infact crime is at its lowest in scotland with more police officers compared to other parts of the uk..
Oops! Midweek video is still a nice surprise Michael. I'm sure I'll get used to it.
Correction 18th century! We didn’t have PM’s in the 17th century, finger error.
Starmer and his Labour Party will be accepting Braverman next.
As for gangs robbing shops. As any kind of employee would you really stop them for minimum wage? Would you get stabbed for minimum wage?
It has never been under control.
Soaring crime is part and parcel of living in a big city. Apparently.
Why not in Tokyo?
Thank you Micheal, how depressing it is isn't it, at 77 I can't believe at what I see and hear these Days. Keep safe.
Not sure why you link two separate issues. What has diversity workers got to do with crime fighting. Are you saying its either or?
It is very impressive when somebody as measured as you are calls somebody a complete and utter loser. I am a rather firy person, when I say that, it does not hit as much as it does when you do!
😊
