Was thinking that this was a bit of a harsh take on my favorite genre, but then realised that shitting on folk punk is a staple of folk punk and that nothing said was in any way wrong despite being kinda whingey, which pretty much makes it a folk punk song just without a guitar or washboard.

You could have an Boomer read the script and think he is totally bashing folk punk, or have a young punk kid read the same script and think he is giving it the highest praise. @Coolea seemed to land right in the middle for me and I couldnt tell if he is speaking favorably or not, and you know I think thats perfect. I think the polarization of folk punk is one of the elements that make it great, not because I'm tryin to be cool or whatever, but because it elicits such strong emotions from everyone who listens to it.
I used to walk around high-school listening to Johnny hobo and the freight trains and ajj in the halls while I was skipping class. I had a friend Nathan who turned me onto ptb and a few other bands. He passed away from diabetic shock this year. After h.s. we stopped hanging out and I regret that. Anyway, this genre makes me think of my friend. Miss u man
Love Songs for the Apocalypse was my dorms bedtime album. Every time I hear it now I can smell the fresh Pacific Northwest air from leaving the window open all night. Learned about many amazing bands and artist in Job Corps. It was a petri dish of diverse backgrounds.

It's all people who have hit rock bottom and have spent their lives struggling. Something that not everyone can understand or relate to.

There could also be an argument made for Lead Belly being the biggest influence. Dude has had a huge influence on blues and rock as a whole. Also he was a murderer who sang his way out of prison. Dude was folk punk decades before punk was even a thing
I honestly wish there were more bands holding up the banner. My high-school days were filled with This Bike Is A Pipebomb, and their discography is still so good. Defiance, Ohio is another band that just doesn't get enough credit in the folk punk genre.

The folk punk scene is alive and kicking in Colorado. My band (not folk punk) recently played with Doomscroll and they're a fantastic band and even more fantastic people.

Never been a punk fan, but this genre sounds pretty interesting. I'm usually a fan of folk influences in powermetal and adjacent bands "An Ignorant Guide to Powermetal" when that's all I ask please
I recommend starting with Mischief Brew or Pat the Bunny. Both have good non political hits if you want more of that too.
Yeah, Mischief Brew, Matt Pless, and the Front Bottoms would be a good intro for someone who doesnt actually like punk.

If you like people who eat people by ajj (the rabbit album) please go and listen to knife man, its there best album in my opinion, but people dont talk about it a lot. Also, shooting up and breaking down by chad hates george slaps an ungodly amount and you should listen to it

Last year now, as of 2 hours ago for me... Had some really great songs on it and some really weak ones, a mixed bag that I would still recommend if you haven't already

I invented folk punk as a kid learning to play guitar. Didn't know it would be a thing because folk punk is literally every poor kid in the south/midwest who liked metal and rock but didn't have an electric and amp
I can’t believe this is still relevant enough to make videos about. I grew up on this stuff but haven’t really listened to it in at least a decade. I quit smoking cigs in an attempt to gain control of my life, gained some skills and all of a sudden ajj just sounded like a whiny privileged middle class kid. Erik Peterson is a fucking saint though.
Blackbird Raum gets slept on a lot these days, but back in 2010 they really redefined the scene. Unfortunately the modern folk punk scene really died in 2014 but I do see youtube bringing it back here and there.

If anyone wants a starter playlist for Folk Punk, there's a good one on Spotify I found a while back called 'For the Love of God Please Listen to Folk Punk' IDK who made it but the cover is a screaming possum and it's only like 20/30 songs long. Full of great bands that I still listen to around 2 years later
That was a quite a bit more positive than I expected. My feelings on anything folk punk adgacent are conflicting, but in the end, for a genere to officially exist for almost 3 decades with almost no commercial recognition at all... punk as fuck.
